Absolutely.
I have other mixed CDs that I've made before, but I think part of the fun in all of this is coming up with something new—and something that is specifically meant for the rather eclectic group that will surely be a part of this. 

yeah, i can always ask someone about a playlist from their ipod and dup it or whatever...this way seems more personal. loses something without the cd in hand.

fishy, i completely understand where you're coming from and will be fine with whatever is decided.

i think it is important to come up with NEW mixes - not just rehashing something you've had or made for someone else, in keeping with the whole concept of mix tapes, but that's just me. plus, how would anyone know? LOL anyway, i have already thought of at least 10 possible themes.

I like having the CD as well. When friends of mine typically make me a mixed CD, I listen to it in my car more often than anywhere else. I might rip a couple of songs off of it if I want to add them to my iPod, but I like having the CD.

lol the mixtape culture picks a theme, slaves over a playlist, includes minimal to ellaborate cover art, and then sends it off - constantly thinking about it until someone finally comments on the songs you chose.

me too - I could have this done in about 5 minutes. 

It's my preference too, but I can see how mailing out 50 CDs to people can be a bummer.  I'm thinking of maybe taking on co-hosts (to split the mailings 2 or more ways) if the group gets huge, but right now it's under 10 members.

This is a cool thought.  I'd be willing to re-think logistics if others wouldn't mind sort of losing the overall "process of the tape".  By that I mean burning discs, liner notes, cover art, etc.  I like to do all these things, but would probably have to upload my notes and cover art, etc. because I can't do that times 50 and not end up hating my own idea :D

Now: Rather than burn a bunch of CDs and burn a bunch of postage, a person could *cough* upload *cough* the tracks, zipped and renamed DeckPlans.zip or something. Most of us get some amount of FTP space with our ISP accounts (tho few people actually use it). If you're on a mac you can share the file directly from your mac (as long as you're online), and you can upload to mac.com and I'm sure a lot of similar services exist for the PCs. If push comes to shove I could host it. Of course you don't want to have it be "MyFavoriteMusicMix.zip" or linked to from a hundred different websites, so keep that in mind. Mac.com (me.com now ) files that are shared can have an expiration date assigned so that would keep a file from being searchable next year...
