You read the last three comments, and you have to wonder WTF some on the Right (I'm looking at you WY, MT, ID, western OR/WA/CA, NV, AZ, ND, SD, NE....) are thinking. I get the whole "freedom" and "independence" thing, but we have no water and fire/smoke are destroying everything around you. I read a story today that the world has lost 1 months worth of oil production since the start of the Iran war at the end of February. The world is adjusting to higher prices... although it may not be sustainable. If anyone in the administration had half a brain, they would re-instate the rebates for electric vehicles, re-invest in the alternative energy they shut down, and sell green energy as the lemonade we made out of our lemon of a war....
But that would mean some sort of alignment with the "Green New Scam", and everyone knows NOTHING created by democrats can be supported.
We truly get the government we deserve. Look what being stupid is doing for us now. At least those tariffs on the Canadians for the smoke they sent our way is going to get them in line.

The problem with getting people to pay attention to global warming is that it's such a huge, slow-moving problem in opposition to our petroleum-based consumerist society. Combating global warming is attacked as doomsaying and driving us into poverty.
As for Trump: the curse of his presidency is that, using the hockey metaphor, he skates to where the puck is and not where it's going to be. No future planning, no interest in the environment or conservation.
GW Bush fixed on beliefs about progress and public benefit and would not change them in face of contradictory evidence. Trump doesn't even have those beliefs. He just wants to live in the 80s.
How can anyone think such a man is going to improve their lives when he doesn't give a damn about them? Doesn't Trump's billions in corruption and his fixation on monuments to himself shake their faith?
It's a solid argument.... unless you pay homeowners insurance or taxes, in which case you're getting the bill anyway.

It was about 10 years ago that a climate expert I know said it was too late to prevent major climate impacts and we are basically fucked, our kids and grandkids are certainly fucked. (maybe not an exact quote).
Every indication since then is that he was probably being optimistic.
I expect that we will find that things are getting worse much faster than presented. Partially due to the experts being careful not to overstate their case and partly because of right wing regressive policies globally.
On a related point, most Americans seem blissfully unaware of how much they are shielded from global petroleum prices and how much more energy they use than other developed nations.

An old friend lost his home and farm in the Bald Range wildfire near Summerland B.C. three days ago.
His dad built the house in the 70s. My friend and his wife and special needs son moved up there a year and a half ago from the city to live with his parents, help manage the farm and allow them to age in place.
They had rehabilitated the barn, added a large kitchen garden and he built greenhouses. There were horses, chickens and pigs, who had piglets two weeks ago.
They got only minutes warning when the winds shifted and the fire raced towards their property. He packed his family into two vehicles, with the dogs and cats, and stayed behind to set up sprinklers on the house and barn.
Not long after, the fire drove him to seek refuge in the creek under a steel bridge, where he waited it out for hours.
Everything is gone.
The horrific irony is that he was the first keynote speaker I heard ringing alarm bells, not about global warming but about cumulative climate collapse, back in the early 2000s.
Climate change deniers are not only stupid, they are a danger to the rest of humanity.

ps., wildfires are not just about climate change, but also fire management and invasive species (pine beetles). Arguably, we were too successful stopping fires in prior decades and now there is fuel to burn...plus the damage from the beetles.

My aunt bought a place that's essentially the same as Paradise California as far as terrain and climate. They used to spend summers there, tending the defenses (pumps, sprinklers, mowing, etc) but now they just leave for the summer and have someone else mow and irrigate. They assume one day it will come for their place and they don't want to be stuck on the narrow road with 5000 other fleeing citizens. So they've pre-fled, basically.
