Black eyed man he took the blame
for the poisoning of the well
They found this shoes by the pulley
They found his fingerprints all over the pail

Black eyed man I'm warning you
the people around here
will not be fooled by a simple line or two

Yes your honour I do solemnly swear
that I saw him late last night,
dancing barefoot, bathed in light
and reaching for every star in sight
Yes I did go to him,
but completely against my will
and yes he did things to me
things of which I dream of still

Black eyed man I'm warning you
what I say is what you'll do
to hell with love and truth

I always meant to say I'm sorry
for all the things I said and did
'Sorry,' I feel better now, do you?
But you promised me the sky
and fell short a star or two
What else did you expect me to do?

Black eyed man he took the blame
for the poisoning of the well
They found his shoes by the pulley
They found his fingerprints all over the pail
With a noose around his neck,
cicadas trilling everywhere,
he says to the people gathered round him,
'it ain't the water that's not right around here'

Black eyed man I'm thirsty dear
be a love and bring some water here
drawn fresh from the well

"Yes I did go to him,

Margo is soooooo convincing.

Thanks for pointing this out.
Excellent lyrics!
This song always reminds me of 'Long Black Veil'. Not the same story, but similar shades of illicit love and murder/hanging.
c.

Sweet Margo.

Nice harmonica segue from sweet black angel. Still I'll never forgive this group for using up such a cool band name.
Music like this makes me drink whiskey.

Happily, we're hoping you checked out of RP a long tome ago...
Not really looking directly at the album art, I thought I saw, "baked ham".  May be time for a samich.

Can't stand this broad's breathy voice.
I don't know about the "Cowboy" part, but I certainly agree to the "Junk..'

Yup, cowboy junk. Going to mute.

Would you be placated if I said ''virtually all'' CJ songs are down-tempo? Take a vote on RP and see what you get.
That did indeed placate me. Thank you. I think. And by the way you didn't just say they were all down-tempo. I wouldn't have jumped on you for that. Read your original comment. It was a lot more negative than that.

As tempted as I am to verbally bash you for being a narrow-minded fool, I will instead be pleasant and recommend that you find/listen to Anniversary Song off the (also) excellent Pale Sun, Crescent Moon album. That will end your wondering once and for all.

Now, that's high praise.

The problem with the drop-dead-stunningly beautiful Margo Timmons et al. is that all CJ songs sound the same: slow, sad ballads that never get out of their pit of loneliness and despair. I don't think they are capable of up-tempo or irony/parody.

Junk.
I like this but prefer the live version I have on a compilation CD (can't remember which one).
Hey! It's a Cowboy Junkies song that doesn't immediately send me into a somnolent daze... I knew there must be a least one: nice to have finally found it!
This is a good song off a great album - love her voice.
This disc never got its due. Very underrated.
