Teardrops on the city, Bad Scooter searching for his groove
Seem like the whole world walking pretty and you can't find the room to move
Well, everybody better move over, that's all
'Cause I'm running on the bad side and I got my back to the wall

Tenth Avenue freeze-out
Tenth Avenue freeze-out

Well, I was stranded in the jungle trying to take in all the heat they was giving
The night is dark but the sidewalk's bright and lined with the light of the living
From a tenement window, a transistor blasts
Turn around the corner, things got real quiet real fast

I walked into a Tenth Avenue freeze-out
Tenth Avenue freeze-out

And I'm all alone, I'm all alone
And kid, you better get the picture
And I'm on my own, I'm on my own
And I can't go home

When the change was made uptown and the Big Man joined the band
From the coastline to the city all the little pretties raise their hands
I'm gonna sit back right easy and laugh
When Scooter and the Big Man bust this city in half

With a Tenth Avenue freeze-out
Tenth Avenue freeze-out
Tenth Avenue freeze-out
Tenth Avenue freeze-out

I saw this performed live the night Jimmy Carter was elected president. Clarence retort to the brass interjections was solid, then held his own solo at the end. Second best concert I ever attended.
Miss you Clarence!  {#Yell}   damn!  no sax
Like most of Bruce's old catalog, this song has held up very well. {#Music}
I must say this is my fav Bruce song.   Saw him in KC about '78 ?   he wore the audience out!!  but not me .
Great Piano!!

I got a bad case of Bruce fatigue very quickly after this LP came out thanks to a guitarist with a band I was in at the time who was a BS fanatic.

One of the very few Springsteen songs I actually like.

Woo.
just what I needed this morning.
Thanks!

Bruce at his bellowing best!

There's a little ice cream store on the beach in Belmar NJ called Tenth Avenue Freeze Out. I believe the store is named after the song.

I can still remember the first time I heard this album. At a "head shop" in Martin, TN called "The Next Door" in 1975. One of my all-time favorites. Solid "10" for me. {#Clap}

My best friend used to put this album on in order to drive me out of his house. Very effective.

Agreed. I do like some Bruce songs but generally they seem repetitive and uninteresting to me.

If we MUST hear old BS on RP, this is the only track I care to hear once in a great while.
I looked up who was in the horn section on this one, thinking it was Southside Johnny's band. Nope: the Brecker brothers, Clarence, David Sanborn, and Wayne Andre. Holy moley. Small wonder this one cooked like it did. Still does.
10th avenue BURN-OUT!!!

How is he pompous? He's probably one of the more humble musicians around.

I'm sure he is one of the greatest guys that ever walked the earth.  But his musical style is overblown, bombastic and pompous.

Funny—SNL went on the air in 1975.

SNL debuted in 1975. Piscopo wasn't on until several years later.

I always thought it was "Tempt devil, you freeze now!"

GOOD LORD, I needed this song at this moment! Just got done writing a pissy email. Nothing to cheer me up! Have no idea what the song means or the words or anything.. just the beat!!!!
On "Wings For Wheels", the DVD that came with the BTR 30th anniversary reissue, Bruce says he doesn't even know what it means! It doesn't have to mean anything, it just has to be good, and this one succeeds! Solid 8.

I saw Bruce last Friday in Dublin. A fantastic gig. He had the place buzzin for two and a half hours!
My favorite Springsteen tune of all time
ah... what a great tune!
Thanks again!!! Got tickets for Bruce in Jersey on my birthday in July. Looking forward to that!
This song is so tired

Dude, i just did the exact same thing. It's amazing how many times i've had to explain to seemingly well-adjusted adults how incredibly stupid and ineffective their ideas are. Hit me with some soul, Boss.
cant stand Bruce

Love it
the song was pretty good when it came out, but it sounds extremely dated now though, like bruce himself!
Bruce at his screamy worst.
Tune !!

No, no. It's "Take devil you freeze out". Really, Bruce, you couldn't take the gum out of your mouth first? Bob Dylan sounds like a master elocutionist, compared to this.
so how come you're here?

Hee hee. Me, too. Actually, I always thought it was, "tell the devil you can freeze out..."
"Dead devil you freezer?" Must wash my ears out...
The very beggining of this song always makes me wonder if Bill is really playing a Chicago song
Say, say it again! How much more fun can a song be?

Preposterous. But you can turn down the volume on what is generally considered one of the best rock albums ever produced if you like. The rest of us will groove.

Meh. Being the first time I've heard this tune, it's nothing special. Too much cheddar. Can't swallow the horn section. 5.
It is hard to believe that there is actually someone on this planet (old enough to type) that is hearing this song for the first time in 2007....
Can't believe. A BS song I like.

Oh, yes. I logged on at just the right time. This is a sweet tune. Bruce haters will just have to live with it. Thanks, Bill.
More Springsteen please!
Two hours into the show, breaks out 2 gorgeous beauties in bikinis to dance along with the entire band. Everyone was smiling ear to ear.
PLEASE.... PLEASE... PLEASE.... absolutely, positively NO MORE Bruce Springsteen.... please!!!!!!!!
BRRRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE!
Wo-HOO!!! Played it! And I missed it...
Thanks RP!! More Boss from The Rising, please.
I hate anything Springsteen does.
Huh? SIX years of freezeout from the playlist, and you play Tori Amos a million times in the interim? Shame Bill...
