I don't know where
I'm gonna live
Don't know if I'll find a place
I'd have to think about it some
Amd that I do not wish to face
I guess that I'm counting on his
Divine intervention
I cannot understand my god
I don't know why it gets to me
One day my life
Is filled with joy
And then we find we disagree
All depending on his
Divine intervention
Alright
We're all counting on his...
Does he love us?
Does he love us?
Does he love us?
Does he love us?
Hmm now…

The bass sound on this entire album is big and fat and round and fantastic. Guitars? A little jagged, a little weird, all kinds of great. Nineties power-alt-pop at its best.

agreed!
I do like this song very much
Saw him tour "Girlfriend" back in the day at the now-closed Cotton Club in Atlanta. Fantastic show.
That guitar work sounds like Neil Y/Crazy Horse.

Everybody know this is nowhere....

Are you saying that Matthew Street is "strange music" ? FYI, this whole lp f#ckin rocks. Get a life and listen to your music elsewhere. You have no taste.
I SO LOVE the fat riffing and tasty leads throughout the whole lp. Does he love us?

nope. trying hard, but still most shittiest song on RP repertoire.
matthew sweet doesn't get played enough here on RP!

this song is awesome! of course, i love it all.

if he ever tours again, i promise - you won't regret his live shows. it's so much fun!!!!
Saw MS and his band i Copenhagen i 92-93. Last gig on a worldtour. He was not a bog name i Denmark, so the audience were more or less my friends and fellow musiclovers. Very intimate and generous .One of my top 3 concerts - and I have 400 +

Had just got a new stereo when this came out in '91 and I BLASTED this.

Thanks for the chuckles, and I fully agree that 'fade and return' is silly.  I also don't care for the 'hidden tracks' that CDs allowed.  Anyone remember those?  Green Day I think had one, can't remember who else did that though.

Long Live RP!! (and keep knobbing on ;-)
I didn't like MS while he was overplayed on the radio. His music grew on me! Now I think he is great! ...especially in FLAC with great phones, amp &DAC!

Long live RP for playing this!!

...Bill, you didn't play the fade out and return at the end of the track!

One of the few songs here on RP that makes me change the channel. It gets too much airtime.

Gotta love Wikipedia!  About this album ...

"The cover of the album features a photograph of actress Tuesday Weld from the late 1950s.  Originally called Nothing Lasts, the album was retitled following objections to the title from Weld."

Some folks have the power of influence.

So that's where Jack White got his bonnet inspiration.
Any day now - Christie Hynde Now this punchy track full of independence , and ‘don’t push me about’ lyrics pulls me in closer ... closer .,, and out steps broadly feminine ‘cause’ grit. Just to take us home ... 🎶🧡😊🙏🐾
Just was thinking about the album cover similarities between this Matthew Sweet and the Paul Simon's self titled album with "Me and Julio'" played a few songs back.
RP turned me on to Matthew Sweet. Thank you Bill.
maybe it's just me bill, but I'm getting a kick out of the song title selection here on this inauguration day....
Dazzling guitar by Richard Lloyd!
really a "7"
but it needs some help getting outta the "6's".....so, 8!
Its pretty impressive that i still know all the words to this song.
God of catholics says the pover people are the rights,
And God of protestants that's the riches are the rights...
Anyway, I dont't care these notions of good and evil !
I saw him back in the 90's.  He was good.   What was ragingly obvious in the live show was how he tuned his guitar and played just like Neil Young.   I don't hear it in his recordings.
Bill's on an 90's journey tonight. Love it so many memories of shared household living.

Lead guitar by the great Richard Lloyd of Television.
This band never got the acclaim it deserved.  They rock.

I bought this album when it came out and my friends were like, "What? this is garage band BS!" I 'm like, "No, It's just so weird" In a great way!
Mathew's tone is par excellance on this one :-)

Me 3! I read a comment on another post that he must have had a really shitty manager/promoter, because he should have been bigger than he was. Totally agree with that too! Definitely had some great songs.
Wow! Great little bit of info! Seriously love this song/album too much. “Gotta love Wikipedia! About this album ... "The cover of the album features a photograph of actress Tuesday Weld from the late 1950s. Originally called Nothing Lasts, the album was retitled following objections to the title from Weld." Some folks have the power of influence.”
Haven't heard this song in ages. I can't wait to get home and listen to this album again.

First note always reminds me of Powderfinger.

Yes, I saw him a few years back where he played the entire Girlfriend album.  It was wonderful, actually better than I expected.  I got to meet him after the show and he was a really genuine guy.  I hope you go.
has anyone seen him live? he's coming to area and wondering if I should go or pass. I loved the album Girlfriend years ago, but have not followed much of him lately. any recommendations are appreciated!

A 3 reduced to a 1 by excessive rotation

Seems pretty harsh as it's only been played twice in the last 30 days, and this is maybe the first time I've heard it in a while.  For nostalgia around this entire album I'll still give it a 7
A 3 reduced to a 1 by excessive rotation
Kind of reminiscent of Joe Walsh's stuff...
I knew something good was going on in this song, and then disocvered that the backing band is from the Voidoids and Television. Go figure.

Ouch! Captain Beefheart was sooooo much better, if you know what I mean.
This music could have used some divine intervention during the recording session.

Love this one!  What an album this was!
This was one of the best "cassettes" I ever purchased!!
There were a few tunes I didnt like so much but most of them are amazing. Super creative music and lyrics.
Thanks Bill you always seem to dig up the good stuff man!!

Cool tune - Robert Quine and Richard Lloyd trading solos on this tune if I remember correctly.

She's got no neck...

Album defined my 1990s.
