TENERE TAQQIM TOSSAM
Jealous Desert
(translation from tinariwen.com)
The desert is mine
Tenere, my homeland,
We come to you when the sun goes down
Leaving a trail of blood across the sky
Which the black night wipes out
The desert is hot and its water hard to find
Water is life and soul
To all my brothers I say, the desert is jealous!
O Tenere! A jealous desert!
Why can't you see? You are a treasure
I've seen the world, I love you better
Oh Tenere! You are the treasure of my soul.
I cry out to God on High
To bring my people together
In unity

Very eclectic!
Bit of an obscure reference this, but the chorus of this track sounds a bit like "I love the Chosen One" of Mighty Boosh fame...
I Love the Chosen One

I Agree, as long they are polite about disliking something. People have different tastes! Once somebody makes a nasty comment, they deserve to be stomped!!

That is determined by the quality of the dissent!

Check the video of the song out on Youtube. Mesmerizing. The tribes from Mali are nomads and go from one oasis to another and home is an alien concept to them. Home is where the desert is, where the music lives and where life can move ahead from. Sipping on some tea, jamming with some amazing music and reverberating across the universe.

I love The Tinariwen. You should considered other songs of the band. It's quite giving pleasure listening this kind of music in different language.
Their music genre called desert blues... it's very cool that calling a music genre as desert blues.

this band is so great! ive been following for a while
This band has developed a familiar but entirely original sound from which they've written several great songs. I wouldn't say this is one of the best, so check out their other work without English lyrics.
Saw them in Dublin pre-Covid - mesmeric performance in the Olympia

Yes. According to https://pitchfork.com/news/427...
The band recorded the album in the Algerian desert, where TV on the Radio
co-leaders Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone joined them to play on the
album. Later, Wilco's Nels Cline and the horn section of the Dirty Dozen
Brass Band also contributed.
I found a video that looked like they were playing with the guys from TV on the Radio. Can anyone verify if that is, in fact, the case? Did they collaborate? Anyway, love this stuff.

BEAUTIFUL!
They are on tour in the U.S. Check out their website. You can also checkout an NPR special on this group. Their vocalist was kidnapped by ISIS, but was miraculously was returned. They've made a commitment to help protect those in danger and standup to terrorism. Well worth supporting.

c'mon, man. you gotta admit. rap music sux. always did. that would be the point if we weren't writing about this song. THIS sounds authentic. It is pleasing to the ear.

If I want repetitive, I'll cue up some Phillip Glass. This guy's voice just makes me want to gratuitously kill something.
An ethnic Mark Knopfler voice.
Now that I am listening with that in mind, yep, it definitely sounds similar to Firefly/Serenity soundtrack music. Nice call.

I vastly dispise rap. This to me is not close, but I guess I can see where someone might think it. I note the rap I don't immediately hate is people who are actually playing instruments.
Traditional African music has so infiltrated society in the past, Rap is but one offshoot but traces are in most all the popular "low brow" stuff like Jazz, C/W Rock and of course Blues. Now that more and more stuff like Tinariwen is being heard folks think it is copying rap, but is really the source of Rap with some updates added ... some from rap I'm sure. Full circle.

And why does Africa need to interweave rap into its music? No defendable answer exists when you hear wonderful, culture rich music like this.

It's rather odd, but every time I hear the start of this song, I think it's going to be Flight of Conchords.
ehm, not mine, just rambling away like that.
Stop playing this song already! Once a quarter is PLENTY.
What's all that about?
I like it but played very frequently. It was last played just 2 days ago.
Dig this. 9
I give it a 2 because it has a little something going for it....but I don't care for the other 8.
