I descended a dusty gravel ridge
Beneath the Bixby Canyon Bridge
Until I eventually arrived
At the place where your soul had died
And barefoot in the shallow creek
I grabbed some stones from underneath
And waited for you to speak to me

In the silence, it became so very clear
That you had long ago disappeared
I cursed myself for being surprised
That this didn't play like it did in my mind
All the way from San Francisco
As I chased the end of your road
'Cause I've still got miles to go

And I want to know my fate
If I keep up this way
It's hard to want to stay awake
When everyone you meet
They all seem to be asleep
And you wonder if you're missing your dream

You can't see in a dream
You can't see in a dream
You just can't see in a dream
A dream, a dream, a dream, a dream
A dream, a dream, a dream, a dream
A dream, a dream, a dream, a dream

And then it started getting dark
I trudged back to where the car was parked
No closer to any kind of truth
As I must assume was the case with you

Naah - there's a lumpy artlessness to the lyrics and singing that just isn't redeemed by the noise at the end.  Pass.
(*and it's the Bixby Creek Bridge, not Bixby Canyon Bridge...).
I've become more of a Death Cab fan than I ever expected, and it's not more than an amorphous fondness - especially this album.
Good stuff - not heard it before.
I didn't know what to think about it until DCFC began their concert in Hamburg back in 2009 with a great version of this song. Love it!

Touché.

How about this: Not the best cut from this album. It's a shame, because all songs about Northern California, one of the most beautiful parts of the planet, should be good.

Me agree.

The beginning of this song reminds me of an early morning  fog rolling in over Raggeg Point... beautiful.
The middle / ending part reminds me of a summer holiday weekend day at Santa Cruz... not nearly as pleasant.

The singer's voice, like the name of the band, is sacarine.

Everybody seems to have an RP favorite that they personally just can't stand.  Death Cab For Cutie is mine.  One of the few things that makes me take off my headphones.
This song rocks out in its own clean-white-shirt-and-glasses kind of way. Most excellent, I'd say... and I guess I just did.

My friend made his own bungee rope and jumped off the Bixby Canyon Bridge. I've seen the video footage. He survived but I wouldn't recommend it.

Like the band, but this song blows.

Big Creek Bridge is just as impressive...
I've been over it a few times...
Not sure what I think of this track. Good or bad, it keeps my interest throughout. Perhaps it is a grower. I'll start with a 6.

It's new. I'm giving it a chance. 7

And "California" by the Beach Boys. THE ULTIMATE California song... On my way to sunny california On my way to spend another sunny day Water, water get yourself in the cool, clear, water The sun shines brightly down on penny's place The sun shines brightly down on the bay The air's so clean it'll just take your mind away Take your mind away Take your mind away Have you ever been south of monterey Barrancas carve the coast line and the chaparral flows to the sea 'neath waves of golden sunshine And have you ever been north of morro bay The south coast plows the sea And the people there are of the breed They don't need electricity Water, water, cool cascades of clear, clear water The sun dance final scene sets the hills ablaze. Horizon edges quick up the mountain's way. Have you ever been down salinas way? Where steinbeck found the valley And he wrote about it the way it was in his travelin's with charley And have you ever walked down through the sycamores Where the farmhouse used to be There the monarch's autumn journey ends On a windswept cyprus tree Water get water get yourself in that Get yourself in that get yourself in that cool, clear, water The sun shines brightly down on penny's place Get yourself in that water The air's so clean that it just takes your mind away Take your mind away Take your mind away Have you ever been to a festival, the big sur congregation? Where country joe will do his show And he'd sing about liberty And the people there in the open air, one big family. Yeah the people there love to sing and share Their new found liberty
Now pair this up with Big Sur by the Thrills.
