Mother don't worry,
I killed the last snake that lived in the creek bed
Mother don't worry,
I've got some money I saved for the weekend
Mother remember being so stern
with that girl who was with me?
Mother remember the blink of an eye
when I breathed through your body?
So may the sunrise bring hope
where it once was forgotten
Sons are like birds,
flying upward over the mountain
Mother I made it up
from the bruise on the floor of this prison
Mother I lost it,
all of the fear of the Lord I was given
Mother forget me now
that the creek drank the cradle you sang to
Mother forgive me,
I sold your car for the shoes that I gave you
So may the sunrise bring hope
where it once was forgotten
Sons could be birds,
taken broken up to the mountain
Mother don't worry,
I've got a coat and some friends on the corner
Mother don't worry,
she's got a garden we're planting together
Mother remember the night
that the dog got her pups in the pantry?
Blood on the floor, fleas on their paws,
And you cried 'til the morning
So may the sunrise bring hope
where it once was forgotten
Sons are like birds,
flying always over the mountain
I killed the last snake that lived in the creek bed
Mother don't worry,
I've got some money I saved for the weekend
Mother remember being so stern
with that girl who was with me?
Mother remember the blink of an eye

nice
.. smooth .
I cannot express how much I love iron and wine. Touches my soul.
This is trance music...
Awesome tune...the version they played on Austin City Limits was a bit faster and spectacular as well.

Both are claimed by Christians as Christian artists in the mainstream scene.

Some of the most beautiful lyrics in this one...love it.
Monotonous, dreary.
I like stuff like this...
This reminds me a little of Nebraska in that it completely transcends its production value. Both sound like they could have been recorded by one or two dudes in their basements, but that is not what you end up focusing on. The music completely removes itself from the "sound" of the recording, if that makes sense.
This isn't nearly as good as Nebraska, but I think it deserves a good listen.

...nicely atomospheric - one of his stronger pieces, i think...

The very model of 'Ho-Hum'. Puts me in mind of The Smiths number which goes "Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head" ;-|
Simply kind of dull and uninspiring

pretty sure this is a "DIY" recording, done at sam beam's home. as i understand his quiet style of singing was a result of his practicing music after his little daughters were in bed......
Sound nice... I like the tune and all... but did they record in the same room as the computer? That fan noise is a bit distracting.
Maybe I'm not in my artsy-fartsy mood tonight...

Is there some kind of connection between this and Sufjan Stevens?

Is it christmas yet? This set of songs is a gift. Right on, RP.

Adore this melancholy brilliance. So heartrending. May it go on and on. Intimate. Where has all the good music like this gone??
Right on. This one got me as I swear I've heard my son's say some of those exact phrases to their mother. Heartbreaking - not boring at all.
Eldest Son: "Mother don't worry, I've got a coat and some friends on the corner"
Youngest Son: "Mother don't worry, she's got a Garden we're planting together"

Down the drain? In the garbage heap in the sky? No.. I'm just kidding...
I just think they are very boring. I rated this a 5 because I don't hate it, but definately don't like it that much. It's good at very rare intervals.

Stepped on some toes, huh? Look, I bought three of their albums, listened to them for a number of weeks, and came to the concluson that they are a band of limited artistic range and dimension (a polite way of saying "boring"). I may be wrong, and I admit it's a subjective evaluation, Nevertheless, it's my opinion, not whining. If you like I&W, I'll gladly send you my albums if you'll pay for the postage.
Couldn't agree more (about the "limited artistic range and dimension"). I've enjoyed a few of their songs, but I really don't get much else out of them. As a result, I listen to them very rarely.

No. I&W has a particular style, to be sure. But saying they all sound the same is foolish and intellectually lazy. Or dare I say, WHINY.

You might as well say, "all their songs." They all sound the same. This one may stick out as being particularly plodding and whiny.
I think you have to be a mama to a boy to love this song as much as I do.

This is a lot similar to Jeff Buckley's version of Dancing in the Moonlight.
Reminds me of a song by the Foo Fighters, I think off of the Colour and Shape LP. Digging this.
awesomely mellow and mellowly awesome
I'm not so fond of the whole whispery thing... I can take it in small doses, but if I listened to a whole Iron & Wine album I might cry.
Oddly, it's another rainy, dreary day here in Indy. Sooooo, Iron & Wine songs cause rain and general malaise? Well, not the malaise part, I like their songs, but I see an emerging atmospheric conspiracy theory in the works here.

Very nice sound.
I've only heard of these guys on RP, as well, but I do want to hear more. Understated and quite nice to listen to. Me likee!!
I have only heard I&W on RP... don't know them, don't know anything about them. But.... I have heard nothing from them that that makes me want to hear any more. Very much reminds me of 60's high school bands that were trying to be 'heavy'. Sorry to those of you that like their stuff. I just think that it is a waste of time.
Yes, always a good choice Bill!
I like this one and their other song too.
One of my very favorite songs...sad I missed it, but I have it recorded about five ways, so can listen whenever I want.
Agree about the I&W/Calexico comments. Saw them on their tour here in the US last December. Talented musicians all around, great show!
...So may the sunrise bring hope where it once was forgotten. Sons are like birds flying upward over the mountain...
I saw Iron & Wine in London on their tour with Calexico on Sunday. Was an excellent night all round. Both bands work well collaborating on the 'In the Reins' EP.
This track is taken from a great album, I'd recommend it.
Same here in Indianapolis. Rainy, dreary, and the perfect day for some Iron and Wine.
this is great for the rainy day it is here. i want to go back to sleep! good song though.
Spread love today
