Taking care of business
Easy to say in 2024?! Hindsight makes wisdom keepers of us all; if we’re so lucky 🍀
I've been doing hip stretches for 3 weeks. When this came on I just had to check them out. Danced well around the room. Now, if my wind would come back . . .
One of the greatest covers of all time. Aretha made it her own.
There's a level of "wait, this is a COVER?!?!?!?" here that no one but (maybe) Jimi Hendrix and Whitney Houston approach in the history of pop/rock music.
It's a nice song, but pales in comparison to the version Otis Redding unleashed on the Monterey International Pop Music Festival. The man and his band were out to kick ass, and they really socked it to the audience.
"I have to go and I don't want to go"
Skippy again? Aaarrrgghh!
She was being polite about it! LOL! ...And a LOT of people agreed with her!
What is this "we" stuff? ...Sorry skippy, you were voted off the island!!

Indeed! As Otis acknowledged at Monterrey in '67:
This is a song that a girl took away from me. Good friend of mine.
This girl, she just took this song.
But I'm still gonna do it anyway.
What is t-c-b ?
Taking Care of Business!
there are indeed great great songs we tire of hearing. This is one of them

You may have misused the word "we" here.
So Shelley <Aretha Franklin's publicist> graciously agreed to forward our question to her boss. A few days later, a message was left on our voicemail: “Hello, this is Aretha Franklin. Barbara Shelley told me what’s been going on out there. It’s ‘R-E-S-P-E-C-T, take care of T-C-B,’ as in taking care of business.”

From the Archives: Aretha Franklin once called The Times to explain some lyrics from 'Respect' - Los Angeles Times (latimes.com)
Because it sounds like he was in trouble.
Taking Care of Business? That was the name of the Motown TV show that came out the next year.

Thanks for that. I think that was Robin Seymour introducing the Rationals. Remember Club 1270?

And I am sure that RP is the first and only place they have heard this song too. Another note, can't believe they rejected Do Right Woman, by far her best song imo.
"Can you put a price on "Respect"? It likely isn't zero. Yet, ironically, Aretha Franklin's version of this classic empowerment anthem has never earned one penny for the singer in its decades of airplay on American radio stations"
"American AM-FM radio stations are only obligated to pay the writers of the songs they air, not the performers."

We're already on Aretha's side on that one. Note that it's US terrestrial broadcast (AM/FM) stations that are exempt from paying royalties to performers. Internet & satellite stations definitely do pay.

This post is another of the reasons I love Radio Paradise, thanks Bill!
Pedro1874 said nothing about disliking this song, or Aretha.
Try to keep up.

We listen to RP because it is supposed to be an alternative to mainstream radio which overplays songs like this.
Aretha Franklin is amazing BUT "RESPECT" IS NOT HER ONLY SONG!!
I challange RP to play any other song from Aretha Franklin!

I always thought the acronym was "TCB" - which meant "take (or taking) care of business", even before the BTO song or Elvis Presley's use of the term.
According to the song info: "Plays in last 30 days: 2". I wouldn't count that as "so much"...

Sorry about that outburst but having lived through the 60's era and being a big fan of SOUL I get really pissed when I hear the garbage of today.
That's okay. You're allowed. Like me, you've lived through it when it was new.
Open your ears than!

No it ain't. Leave the room and shut up.
Worth her weight in gold? Might pay off the national debt...
Sorry, that was just mean...
Oh I agree though there are some exceptions, mostly Beatles and Led Zepplin related.
No exceptions.
I was a huge Zep, Beatles, Floyd fan, etc. and at almost 52 years old, I've heard enough of it. If I never hear Comfortably Numb again that will be fine with me. Every note is permanently engraved in my brain anyway.
When a pop song thos old is played this much for decades...it reaches that point. Arethra was a brilliant musician with many wonderful songs worth exploring

It is not often that I miss being a New Yorker. However, when I read comments such as this one, I really miss New Yorkers. Somewhere out there are ten lost souls who rated this a 1. Screw 'em!
Now, this is one of the classic greats!
Yup! And may I recommend a viewing of Tom Dowd: The Language of Music? He was the engineer at Atlantic Records responsible for Aretha, Cream, Ray Charles...the list goes on and on and on. A very interesting documentary, as is the counterpart DVD about Ahmet Ertegun, Atlantic's founder.
