This is radio clash from pirate satellite
Orbiting your living room,
Cashing in the bill of rights
Cuban army surplus or refusing all third lights
This is radio clash on pirate satellite
This sound does not subscribe
To the international plan
In the psycho shadow of the white right hand
Then that see ghettology as an urban Vietnam
Giving deadly exhibitions of murder by napalm
This is radio clash tearing up the seven veils
This is radio clash please save us, not the whales
This is radio clash underneath a mushroom cloud
This is radio clash
You don't need that funeral shroud
Forces have been looting
My humanity
Curfews have been curbing
The end of liberty
Hands of law have sorted through
My identity
But now this sound is brave
And wants to be free - anyway to be free
This is radio clash on pirate satellite
This is not free Europe
Noh an armed force network
This is radio clash using audio ammunition
This is radio clash can we get that world to listen?
This is radio clash using aural ammunition
This is radio clash can we get that world to listen?

The Clash were a seminal band. Their impact on rock and roll cannot be overstated. They were adventurous in their musical style, from reggae to rock and pop, never straying too far from their punk roots; and they fused a righteous political campaign with a fiery delivery. "London Calling" is probably one to top 10 albums of all time.
Agree with Jack Black though -- "Kill your favorite band before they make 'Combat Rock.'"
Then we'd never have the Ginsberg/Clash collab. And we'd all be poorer for it.

new to Radio Paradise. And the comments.
Sad to see so much slagging.
Like what you like...why feel the need to put people down?
Just give it a rating of Lame and move on.
I dig this track and I love The Clash.

The Clash is a pretty good band with a few catchy tunes, nothing more, nothing less.....and this is one of them. 7

Yeah, maybe one of the only 10 tracks of the whole eighties which really haven't survived modernity, perhaps due to the feeble production (never could get used to the sound of that saturated mike at the very end).
Far from their best songs.
First Thievery Corporation and now the Clash? Why are there so many people that only want to listen to classic rock? They probably think Mozart sucks too. Ick.
Wow! Private satelite radio was so futuristic back then.
it's a very weak song ....and too long !
This was released in 1981. . . in case Bill wants to update the info. It was a single and not released on any studio albums.
what a pity
Gotta say...I don't think this is a very good song. The effects are jarring and unnecessary.

Interesting, I hear a bass line that the Gorillaz borrowed. I wonder if this is the source or if the Clash borrowed it from somewhere else too.

Wrong tense - you should be asking what the hell was all the fuss about? To which the answers might be that the Clash were a pioneering rock band coming out of punk, strongly politically-committed and active, bitingly satirical, musically-innovative, who stuck two fingers up to the record companies and did their own thing. They were very much part of the zeitgeist, and some might say that they defined it. The 80s were sh1te for pop music, but the alternative scene thrived and The Clash were a major part of that, influencing a whole heap of other bands. Of course, the danger with songs like this (and, say, Guns of Brixton), whose lyrics contain many contemporary references, are that they'll not age well, but many of their songs (Rock the Casbah, Magnificent Seven come to mind) do still have relevance and 'rockability' even today.
Not that I was ever a big fan of the Clash, as though some songs are in my all-time top 10 much of their output was a bit 'ho-hum' IMO (I bought Sandinista! and was bored stiff by it), but they were probably as important to the 80s as The Beatles were to the 60s. IMHO naturally ;)
Meh. The Clash, for me, is like the Pixies. That is, they're okay, I guess, or only periodically irritating, but still . . . what the hell is all the fuss about, you know?

Edit: Joe Strummer was a genius however who really found himself musically with the Mescaleros later in life; HE is an icon!"Grandmaster Strummer" vs. Radio Raheem in "Do The Right Thing"—

my (hazy) memory of the Clash era was New Wave...and none of us really knew what that meant, but it did mean that we could dance totally cool, wear interesting clothes, and wow, the hair! Post disco, pre hip hop, blessedly ill-defined

A groundbreaking experiment from the '80s.
- The hypothesis: It is possible for a band to be both punk and smarmy at the same time.
- The result: Hypothesis strongly supported.
there are some haterrsssssszzzzz

This truly is essential Clash. This is what I think of when I think of the Clash. Purely driven early punk.

from what i can tell pretty much the majority generally votes a "7" by default. then the fans try to bring it up, and others pull it down. the "median" average means far more than the "mean" average from what i can gather in these cases. in a random example 4 people voting a 1 can pull down a mean average drastically, but it says far more to me that 200 people voted seven.
My default is usually 5. I gave this a 7 since I do find it quite good. I get the feeling that most people over rate most tunes. Of course I do fine myself changing ratings after a few listens of new tunes.

The cumulative listener rating for this is at least 2 points low.
Man, sometimes I do not understand the way the RP audience votes.

Punk tinged with hip-hop. Gotta freakin' love it.
Joe: this is not how I remember you.
Breathtakingly awful. 0. Mute.
I'm seeing a love/hate thing with all the comments-no in between. I never caught on to the Clash thing. Lots of my friends did, however.
Is this Radio Clash? I'm not certain ... maybe if I wait they'll tell me again.
Yep, the song everyone loves to hate... except me, of course. This rules.

I love the Clash, but I have always hated this song.
Even worse, it gets stuck in my head so badly that I start humming it all day and want to shoot myself in the face.
I have never given as many low ratings to songs than I have today! And I'm having a good day!
This sounds even more pedantic following the richness of the Nick Cave tune. (Though I suppose that would be true following most anything else as well.)
I'll give it "important for its time" - that's the highest compliment it deserves.

NICE..I like a little ire for an afternoon snack.
Remember, Radio Clash is listener-supported! So give generously during our fall pledge drive!
this gem has only a rating of 6.7, and drek like U2's "All I Want is You" is rated over an 8? There is no justice.
I was a huge Clash fan from their first album until Combat Rock. It just seemed too commercial to me. I still miss Joe Strummer though =<
