You and me
Meant to be
Immutable
Impossible
It's destiny
Pure lunacy
Incalculable
Insufferable

And for the last time
You're everything
That I want and ask for
You're all that I'd
Dreamed

Who wouldn't be the one you love?
Who wouldn't stand inside your love?
Protected and the lover of
A pure soul
And beautiful
You

Don't understand
Don't feel me now
I will breathe
For the both of us
Travel the world
Traverse the skies
You're home is here
Within my heart

And for the first time
I feel as though I am
Reborn in my mind
Recast as child and mystic son

Who wouldn't be the one you love?
Who wouldn't stand inside your love?

And for the first time
I'm telling you how much I
Need and bleed for
Your every move and waking sound
In my time I'll wrap my wire
Around your heart and your mind
You're mine forever now

Who wouldn't be the one you love and live for?
Who wouldn't stand inside your love and die for?
Who wouldn't be the one you love?

A genuine voice of the nineties, instant recognizable and loved.
This is one of those songs that sounds like it always existed. I mean it in a good way. Machina may have had some problems, but it had some moments. Overall, I really liked it at the time, and it felt like the band I loved were "back."

They were on their way out here, but this song really holds its own in an album that felt like a defiant statement. Do not go gentle into that good night, and all that.
For the last time, stop stepping on the cat's tail!!!!

totally agree, Neptune.  it's really not about having a "great voice" it's about the vibe, either intense or mellow, that's created with the voice+instrument combo.  i'm a big fan of all three band you mention.  they all kick arse.

and Bill, let's hear from the SP Adore album.  rock on RP!

I agree.  Still one of my favorites from this time period.

Sometimes a wall of noise is just what is needed.
Think Steven Lynch nailed Billy Corgan's randomly itchy/scratchy voice:

Shame on the producer or engineer or someone, I can't hear his vocals.

I can remember having a live acoustic version of this years ago that was really nice. Great guitar work by Corgan.
Just noise really.

I didn't fully appreciate how great the Pumpkins were in the 90s and early aughts, but in retrospect, this song is fantastic.  Sweet, haunting, and catchy all at once.  And even now, well beyond their heyday, they're still great live.

I love how Bill puts together musical connections with the track listing. The last four have feature dreadful vocalists. Robert Plant's (up next) voice qualifies these days too. Bob Dylan, and Hendrix must up soon.
One of the last truly great songs written by Billy Corgan, in my opinion. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995, five years before than Machina) required a lot of his creative energy, possibly too much...

You forgot the king of the Off-Key and Whiney: Thom Yorke and Radiohead. Oh, yeah, and Arcade (Mis)Fire.
At least Billy Corgan and his mates have some energy cojones and aren't emulating a goddamn funeral dirge.

Billy is pushing wrestling entertainment now. Or, it's an increase in his push from interests he says he's always had. I'm glad he's a proponent of reality programming, it certainly trebles the artistic effect of decent r and r tunes like this one. He can write the theme track, Stand Inside Your Ring.

I've only heard one Smashing Pumpkins song that I really like, and this isn't it.

That's because most every one of their songs sounds the same. They have a formula that the would make a disco band envious.

Egads! Can the lead singer at least try a different octave?  Different phrasing? Can he quit the ever-presence whining, just for one song?

Can the thud and drone guitar and drumming work be changed just a little? How about a slide guitar?

How about just trying a little soul or blues? Or fun? Or a love song?

How about some keyboards? Horns? Some African or Arab rythmn?

That's pretty sad.

This isn't bad. Kinda like it...but it does fall into the vast collection of SP tunes that don't do much for me.
Boring "thud and drone" mono tones following the PAAD formula. That is, every song the band puts out must have Pain, Angst, Anger, or Despiar.  So predictable...so boring.

Sadly... RnR has been stuck in the rut for last 20 years.

RIP RnR.

wiki says:

^ Although frequently referred to as simply "Smashing Pumpkins", and credited as such on the covers of Gish,Siamese Dream, and Zeitgeist (and related singles), the band's name has more often been presented as "The Smashing Pumpkins", dating back to their first demo tape, and exclusively so between Mellon Collie (1995) and Earphoria(2002).

I wouldn't go that far, but this isn't just a "pile of freakin' noise" either.  That's a truly ridiculous assessment.
what a complete and utter pile of freakin noise
This album ages exceptionally well.. released the day after tomorrow 13 years ago, if I remember correctly (23/5/2000). At first I disliked it for the noisiness (which also sadly permeated the zwan album) caused by relentless level compression, but in recent years I find myself appreciating the sounds and arrangements that hide behind the noise. Also, Speed Kills is one of their best B-sides, go check it out!

Everybody in my church loves this song...

I totally understand not liking the SP in general and Billy's voice and ego in particular.

I totally don't understand, however, how much vitriol this particular (IMO godlike) piece of music attracts.

Solo Billy - not really SP, IMHO...

thanks for playin smashing pumkins more often in the last few days!!
Having overheard a few of their big hits, I never became a Smashing Pumpkins fan, so I didn't go out of my way to crank them out, they sounded like droning alt grungers, and I couldn't get a fix on Corgan. But this cut is, well, smashing. I'd iTune it.
The idea that we fill a phone booth filled with water and Billy Corgan - while brilliant and undoubtedly effective - won't work on account of they don't make phone booths anymore.  The thought was there, however.  Imagine how much bad stuff could be avoided in the future if only...

Chamberlin is (was?) a wild beast on drums with a style and energy that was his alone.  The one album that Smashing Pumpkins made without him ("Adore," I think) was interesting, but overall it lacked energy in Jimmy's absence.  It reminded me of when R.E.M. recorded "Up" — it was interesting in tone and feel, but the lack of Bill Berry was definitely felt.

A bit biting for those who dig the "usual".

This is still an overlooked masterpiece of an album, and song of course.

Billy Corgan should be held up as a great source of inspiration among young, aspiring singer songwriters everywhere:

So your voice sounds like a drunken, self-absorbed, pubescent, voice-cracking, Karaoke performance, and your songs sound like muzak fed thru a distortion box, take heart!, because if the Smashing Pumpkins can do it, then so can you!

I totally agree. Even if I happen to Love the pumpkins I find that when I listen to them nowdays I focus all my atention on the drums. Jimmy Chamberlain is a truly amazing musician.

Soemtimes I love Corgan's voice, and sometimes I just want him to shut up

outstanding song from a weird album!
brings back memories from their 99 tour :)

"Who wouldn't be the one you love? "

I love this track.  In UK it is just the right time of day to thrash a bit.  Try it on  decent sound system.

The Baldy Twat in a dress (quote Sharon Osborne) is for sure a difficult character, but has produced some great music.  I don't really care so much for the last SP tome, but absolutely love Siamese Dream, Mellon, and Adore.  This track is the outstanding track of Machina - the video that goes with it apeing Aubrey Beardsley is also very creative.

Love it.{#Bananajam}

10 minus 1 for Billy Corgan being such a dink.

God I love Jimmy Chamberlin's drumming though.
One of the greatest love songs ever, ever,  ever! I just love it. As I said to a friend once: See that guy singing the lyrics he wrote? That's me, that is. See that guy screwing his guitar and making it scream in ecstasy? That's me, that is.

SP is one of those bands I've seen live and will never be able to divorce myself of that experience. Billy Corgan was such an incredible ass, insulting the audience and threatening to leave if they didn't quiet down. A brilliant set, musically, but the crowd sure left swearing never to buy one of their albums. Nov. 1991, Gish tour, along with Pearl Jam opening for the RHCP's. Two months later they were kicked off the tour by Anthony Kiedis and replaced with Nirvana.

I agree that the later albums were a bit of a bollocks in general, but there were a few great songs interspersed here and there between all the crap. Such as this one.

couldn't disagree more. This is my all time fav SP track and I've been a fan from Gish right until their last album!
Rockabobbie wrote:
Fully agree; if anything, Dream was a slight decline. Gish was a nuclear moment in the history of the rock idiom: Butch Vig's production, the dynamics and polish on the songs (they had been playing them in Chicago for 5 years), and that raw, hungry sound of a band giving it everything they have. For my money, Chamberlin's drums make that album leap off the vinyl. Ever hear the I am One B-side, Tristessa? Whoah!
Amen -- GOTTA' be Chamberlin on the skins! Accept no substitute.
