Mamma where's your pretty little girl tonight
She's tryin' to run before she can walk
That's right
She's growing up
She's got a young man waiting
She's growing up
She's got a young man waiting

She's wide-eyed
She'll be streetwise
To the lies
And the jive talk
But she'll find true love
And tenderness on the block

Now daddy don't you ask her when
She's comin' home
When she's back don't ask her where
She's been
She's going out
She's got a young man waiting
She's going out
She's got a young man waiting

She'll be okay
Let her have her way
It's a long way
It's a long walk
But she'll find true love
And tenderness on the block
She's gonna find true love
She's gonna find true love
She's gonna find true love
And tenderness on the block

Now I know how much it hurts to see her go
But she's got a mind of her own you know
She's all grown-up
She's got a young man waiting
She's all grown-up
She's got a young man waiting

She was wide-eyed
Now she's streetwise
To the lies
And the jive talk
But she'll find true love
And tenderness on the block

She's gonna find true love

It sounds like the subdudes are playing in the back
Such a beautiful version of this song, more uplifting than Warren Zevon's, which was a tad dirge-like. And, being sung by a woman this time, gives a different sense of enlightenment to mum's and dad's feelings. Lovely and sensitive, where Warren's was maybe a little too knowing and formal.
I miss Shawn Colvin, and the Subdudes?!

Other than they are both female voices? No.

I turned it up because of this and I was all the happier for it. Thanks!

16 years later and kingsnake's comment is still fitting.
she's definitely being backed by The Subdudes.  What a great version of a Zevon classic.
How to ruin a beautiful Warren song. Sorry

Zevon's version the best - in my humble opinion.

If you get the chance check out this version by Freddie White from his album Do You Do. Had the privilege of frequently seeing him live during university days in Belfast.

RP is so awesome for music lovers and for sound quality, artistry and inclusion of women in the playlist. WHY do so many Comments on women artists revolve around COMPARING TO SOMEONE ELSE and who she SOUNDS JUST LIKE? Are ya'll tone deaf to women's voices and unique artistry? Haven't heard enough to develop an ear for the differences? Thanks RP for the additional service of educating the male dominated public and their ability to perceive what they are hearing (or not).
A Warren Zevon and Jackson Browne classic!
just saw the album title - partnering with the ‘Dudes now makes sense. Saw the Subdudes at Jimmy’s in NO decades ago just as they got started rolling and I couldn’t come down off the high for a couple days (took a day or two longer for my hearing to return to normal)
Shawn and the ‘Dudes = cool.
Reminds me of Diamond in the Rough. 👍

I saw the Subdudes in concert and Colvin came on to join them for this song. Amazing show.

Played Excitable Boy recently on vinyl again. Wow.
Warren Zevon at his very weirdly best. Tenderness on the Block is a great song.
This is a pretty good version - with a country twist.

Wow 14 years later and so much more relevant today!  artmaven wrote:

Had the Warren Zevon album in the cassette tape player in my car for a year, circa '82. Like Shawn's upbeat cover. Also live her cover of Talking Heads "Naive Melody"

Detox Mansion would be awesome right about now!

That's what I was thinking too... the percussion and accordion were a dead give away.

Very sly double entendre methinks
Uurgh.  2
Applause for Shawn ,, but, I'l always love Warren in anything he did.
I dunno...but I think she's going to find true love......more bland repetitive dross from Colvin

Not one of Warren\'s best and while it is delivered sweetly and purely by Colvin, this song ends up as being merely okay. The backing chorus set my teeth on edge - MOR radio here we go ....
Way too cutesy.

great variation on WZ\'s version! Love it! Love it! Love it!
Love that Shawn Colvin.
This song is growing on me. The more I hear of Shawn Colvin, the more I like her. I just upped my rating on this one.
Nothing against Shawn Colvin, but this version can\'t compare to Zevon\'s. His edge is a little tough to match.
\"Climb On (A Back That\'s Strong)\" and \"Set the Prairie on Fire\" are also two great songs from this CD.
