I'm not the freckled maid
I'm not the fair-haired girl
I'm not a pail of milk for you to spoil

Why are the wholesome things
The ones we make obscene?

Latin words across my heart
Symbols of infinity
Elements so pure

I am the spark
Of this machine
Purring like the city bus

Why are the wholesome things
The ones we make obscene?
Well if your mercy's lost
I have enough for us

When did they stop being The Roches?

Thank you for sharing The Roches. I'm listening to them today for the first time. Good stuff... 😊
Lovely. Neko shines through. Mixed that way sure, but something about that beautiful woman's style & timbre that lets her stand out.

Well, only one is pictured to the right, so probably that one.
This song is very well crafted.  The rest of the album....hmmm

I'd die for that privilege!

Another song proving Bill's amazing abilities to pick out great songs from bad albums.  I can' make it past Track 4 on this album.

Agreed, I had such high hopes but it seems that all the magic was in this tune....for me.

Oh, goodness, yes. Maggie, Suzzy, and Terre were awesome with that family harmony and oddball sensibility. Thank you WHFS.
Just a beautiful song.  And you're wrong, bentonian, she's mine :)
I'll give it a 7, because Neko is my girlfriend. She just hasn't realized it yet.

this is the best track, but still a great album

I hate bearing bad news— but I didn't know if anyone here was aware of Maggie Roche passing away this past January....

Whoa. How did I miss hearing about this?

I have copies of just about every album they released, and I saw them perform a couple times in DC. Their first album "The Roches" was produced by Robert Fripp, and had a tremendous sound that they could never quite match (afford?) in their following albums. It's all great sing-along music in the car ...
Absolutely adore The Roches!  And yes the vocal resemblance is striking.

k d lang has one of the most, if not the most, spectacular voice I've ever heard. I like Neko Case, but I am blown away by k d.

The first three lines are sung by lang (I'm not the freckled maid); Veirs (I'm not the fair-haired girl) and then Case (I'm not a pail of milk for you to spoil).

I saw them during their tour and while I'm first and foremost a Neko Case fan I have to say that k d lang has a an absolutely spectacular voice.  Her range, depth, tone, clarity are all just stunning.

Oh MY the voices, if they added Allison Krauss to this mix, it would probably be fatal for me.  The absolute beauty of their sound....

Was really looking forward to seeing these ladies at a festival this weekend.  Found out last night that they just cancelled due to "logistics".  That was about five minutes after I found out I'm getting backstage passes.  Damn!

Stickin' with the 7 rating on this one.

atmen gibt das Leben.
some tiny part of it sounds like "Silent Lucidity" by what's-their-names from the early 90s.

pretty song nonetheless.

The CD cover reminds me of Yes album covers.
This is probably the best song on the album, really. Saw them live last month at a terrible venue here - hoping others on their tours this summer don't have the same disappointment that I had.... I should've just bought a couple the songs instead.
wonderful voices and harmonies ... hauntingly beautiful
That's a new song?  I was so sure I'd heard this years ago, particularly the chorus bit.

Maybe it's Laura Vier's distinct voice that calls me through the ether (or it could simply be air), but this music is quite appealing on initial hearing. Let's hear some more off this album. At least she and Neko write interesting and intelligent songs and have voices that stand out from the bedlam (no it's not bedlam on RP, just so many other places).

That's interesting because I think of Veirs as the weak link in this group. I'm a big fan of Case and Lang, so I'm not too put off by the not quite on-pitch vocals from Veirs.
I just LOVE these three voices together. Also love the phrasing in this song, especially when Neko sings "Purring like a city bus" and draaaaaaws out the "liiiiiiiike." Mmm! {#Yes}
AWESOME!
Yeah, I gave it a 9 as well.  coyote620 wrote:

I'm annoyed by this simply for the fact a clip of it kept playing repeatedly at the movie theatre before the movie started... Under another circumstance, that didn't attach annoyance to the song, I could have liked it lol {#Eh}

Same circumstance for me. I couldn't enjoy Finding Dory with the damn tune stuck in my head.

I submitted "Best Kept Secret" off of the release.
A nice poppy number.
It got the boot.
Would have liked to gone to the bar with these three after they finished recording. Three of my favorites in one song. Nice.

Masterful segue from Hedges' Prelude to Cello Suite # 1 (JS Bach).
Atomic Number: 8 Excellentium.

For me it's Neko's voice, but the three together are outstanding.
Ditto.

John and John are from the town next to my hometown and I am thus inclined to love them, but in their wildest dreams they couldn't sing this well.

Only familiar with kd lang from this triumvirate, but this is delicious.

Wow... Love it!
Definitely want to hear the album when it comes out as these ladies are touring together this summer.  It will be interesting to see what kind of show they put together.

The album will be here soon. For now, this song is all that's been released.

That seems unlikely, unless you're including other sources than RP.
