Binds the world in a feeling all familiar
'Cause everybody owns the great ideas
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner
Antenna up and out into New York
Somewhere in all that talk is all the answers
And oh, my giddy aunt New York can talk
It's a modern Rome and folk are nice to Yoko
Every bone of rivet steel, each corner stone and angle
Jenga jut and rusted water tower, pillar, post and sign
Every painted line and battered ladder building in this town
Sings a life of proud endeavour and the best that man can be
Me, I see a city and I hear a million voices
Planning, drilling, welding, carrying their fingers to the nub
Reaching down into the ground, stretching up into the sky
Why?
Because they can, they did and do so you and I could live together
Oh my god New York can talk
Somewhere in all that talk is all the answers
Everybody owns the great ideas
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner
Oh my god New York can talk
Somewhere in all that talk is all the answers
Everybody owns the great ideas
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner
Oh my god New York can talk
Somewhere in all that talk is all the answers
Everybody owns the great ideas
And it feels like there's a big one round the corner
The desire in the patchwork symphony
The desire like a distant storm
For love, did it come from me?
'Cause it feels like there's a big one round the corner
The desire in the patchwork symphony
The desire like a distant storm
For love, did it come from me?
'Cause it feels like there's a big one round the corner
The way the day begins
Decides the shade of everything
But the way it ends depends on if you're home
For every soul, a pillow and a window, please
In the modern Rome, where folk are nice to Yoko
One of the best anthems about my (not so) humble NYC. Captures the optimism, drive, gall, and chutzpah of this great city.
"Sings a life of proud endeavour and the best that man can be"
Dang, but what a wonderful place to live that even the English sing such praises. Gotta love New York, furshur.
I'd say nearly anything is better than that timeworn Sinatra piece.
Nothing against Ol' Blue Eyes, but "If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere"? Please. The rest of us 320 million Americans are tired of hearing that.
Try dropping a New Yorker anywhere in, say, Wyoming, and see how long it is before they just vanish after wandering off in search of a gluten-free muffin shop.

speaking as a native New Yorker who has lived in two of the boroughs, went to college there, worked there and still does....YES, PLEASE!!
Northern vs southern accent - compleeeetely different
True, but the plodding pace is very similar.
Ans this way to do a sermon with a song...
Thanks. Fixed now.

Oh good. There's a difference.

I have at least one great idea today. Sing it up, Elbow.

Diagnosis : gangrenous.

Peter Gabriel rip off!
He's got that scratchy kind of voice and the thick British accent that sounds like Gabriel's voice in his moody tunes, but he doesn't do all that yelping and yodeling that Mr. Gabriel is known to do on occasion. I believe the two of them are pretty good friends and have worked on projects together.
Guy picks up the cell phone : "Hi Pete! How's it goin'?"
Peter Gabriel: "Hey, Guy! I'm well, working on some new things, couple of shows, 'n stuff, you know. Listen ... something's come up for me next week and I won't be able to do vocals for one of my tracks. We're a bit tight on a schedule, so I thought if you could help me and step in for a day or two?"
Guy: "We'll you know I owe you one for the last time. Send me the words and the ghost tracks and I'll see what I can do."
Peter: "Great, I'll send it right away! Cheers!"
Guy: "Alright. See you soon! Bye-bye."
Hey Fred, after 7 years of commenting I finally disagree with one of your reviews (so cue the End of The World, comets, fireballs and the Labour Party having a usable economic policy).
I see what you mean and in some ways could be soporific, but for me it isn't, it holds my attention with the slow build up..
Hey, David, I have to agree with you. This is obviously a question of taste, and who knows what governs that? This group fills me with happiness whenever I hear them. And they do not bore me at all.
I think it would be good if a band called Arse were to appear on a double bill with Elbow... ;-)
Elbow are a bit like Whispering Bob Harris: great on an early-morning music show for night owls and insomniacs. I've great respect for them as a band (and, indeed, for their adventures in brewing), but their songs could be used as anaesthetic in minor heart surgery

They make beautiful, meaningful music

Been trying to find the right words to express how I feel about Elbow but you just did it for me.
Another word i might use: soporific... Also, sophomoric.
Ditto! This one gives me goosebumps.
I feel about Elbow like so many seem to to feel about coldplay. I really, really don't get them.
Hey ho. . . each to their own.

Best moment, Guy walking individually to each band member: "Pete...I'm having a lovely time." "Mark...I'm having a lovely time."
Looked like they were recording it, which is great.
What an experience - uncompromised affection, camaraderie.
And the wonderful heartbreak of being in love - as we all sang "one day like this a year would see me right..."
And just because we all compare him to Peter G. - well, who cares. Peter is great. But these guys are great too!
Good thing we have lots to choose from. Thanks Bill for introducing me to so much music I would not have otherwise known! Elbow, Doves, Younger Brother, Porcupine Tree, etc.

Yep.
I believe you have hit on the one thing that this guy has been trying for his entire career.
Ok, I've listened to it a bunch and I'm getting into it. It is good - looking forward to seing them at the 9:30 club!
These guys should be big, but it's to my benefit -I get to see them in a small venue!

Second this. Elbow is another one of those excellent bands I would have completely missed without RP.
for me, too.
Well said. I have them filed under Middle Class Tossers for the Masses.
Catchy tune
'It's a modern Rome and folk are nice to Yoko'
One of my favourite Elbow lyrics
