Whether Mr. Grohl can play RnR or not, he has a large audience of listeners and he is introducing those listeners to these "gods".  Hell, kids thought Kanye was "introducing" Sir Paul when they had some publicity event!   Someone needs to educate them about the roots of modern music and I appreciate that Mr. Grohl is doing that.

I, for one, made sure my kids knew about this album and it was the one and probably only they all three liked and actually listened to after I forced a first  listen.  It is a kick-ass album from "Funk 49" to "Ashes The Rain And I" (first and last cut).

Good old 70's alternative radio in Atlanta (WPLO-FM) played "Ashes", a very unlike James Gang sound.  I LOVED that song!  None of the stores in Atlanta had ANY idea of who the James Gang were.  I had to go to my local record store and order the album, and wait. After weeks of waiting, the album finally came in, I get the album home, drop the needle on side one song one, and wonder what the hell !  This is nothing like the song I heard on the radio.  But, I sure as hell didn't lift the needle and stop the music, I was too busy turning the volume up and playing air guitar (I can dream, can't I?).

Absolutely one of my desert island albums.

If you've been a rock nut for decades and make up one those silly 10 best guitarist lists the amazing thing about it just might be who you have to leave off. If you did a second list it could every well be just as good a list as the first one.
This is true for me if I do favs instead of best.
However I will say the Joe gets left off too many first lists. Real deal music man.

BTW. No problem with Jack White.

I saw Joe play on Bondi Beach one summer in Sydney. We wandered up to the stage as he was starting to play Rocky Mountain Way. Summers in Sydney were great in the 80s as a lot of amazing bands fled the cold of the North to play the pub circuit.

Have another listen to Jack White - as an artist this is a thoughtful, creative individual. Maybe not from your pool of credibility, but there should be no question about his participation in the rock and roll circus. Grace Slick said - "...they all bring something to the party. It's the business of the kids to stir up shit - that's the essence of Rock and Roll'. Have a listen to "Blunderbuss"; the full product. You'll hear homage to a lot of your heroes, and their influences. It's rock and roll. The real deal.

Saw the James Gang play at Winter Pop in Toronto in 1970. Winter as in Johnny Winter.  Along with Sha Na Na, Chiliwack, Steel River, and Rare Earth.

 

It was just packed in the Maple Leaf Gardens which I used to call Marvin Gardens.  The acoustics were crappy.  There were a number of arrests.  I remember this one young man who looked very high (speed?) flipping police around as he tried to resist arrest.  

Memories of a 14-year old.

Yup, when this came out, way ahead of its time for sure, we all KNEW this was something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT, and we dug it, on a primal level, even as kids...and through the teens, the crazy stuff we got ourselves into and out of, and onward, well, this has always been one of the constant ones in any collection to make it into play on whatever was handy, and so it hooks all through all and back through again...and now, here, on my MacBookPro, Joe and The Gang have got things Rocking! just like always and everywhere, and DANG, THIS FUNK #49 STILL FEELS MIGHTY GOOD!

It's a good song, but the local radio station back home played it nearly as much as it did new music, so I've heard it WAY too many times. 

If I could go another 10 years without hearing it, I might be able to enjoy it again.

I'm still going to rank it pretty well, because I can't deny that it's a good song, I just don't want to hear it for a while.

Oh Man, I have such sweet memories of this classic. Me and my buds out on a mesa in Cottonwood Canyon, Death Valley. We'd been collecting driftwood all day from the dry riverbed. We made a HUGE bonfire that night that rivaled Burning Man!!! We opened the doors of the van, had the speakers cranked to 11. We were all high on 'shrooms and tequila jumping around the fire. It got downright tribal and primitive! Dancing around Dante's Inferno, indeed!!! GOOD TIMES!!!!
