Do I stress you out?
My sweater is on backwards and inside out
And you say how appropriate
I don't want to dissect everything today
I don't mean to pick you apart, you see
But I can't help it
And there I go jumping before the gunshot has gone off
Slap me with a splintered ruler
And it would knock me to the floor if I wasn't there already
If only I could hunt the hunter
And all I really want is some patience
A way to calm the angry voice
And all I really want is deliverance
Ahh...
Do I wear you out?
You must wonder why I'm relentless and all strung out
I'm consumed by the chill of solitary
I'm like Estella
I like to reel it in and then spit it out
I'm frustrated by your apathy
And I am frightened by the corrupted ways of this land
If only I could meet the Maker
And I am fascinated by the spiritual man
I'm humbled by his humble nature, yeah
And what I wouldn't give to find a soul mate
Someone else to catch this drift
And what I wouldn't give to meet a kindred
Ahh...
Enough about me, let's talk about you for a minute
Enough about you, let's talk about life for a while
The conflicts, the craziness and the sound of pretenses falling all around, all around
Why are you so petrified of silence
Here, can you handle this?
Did you think about your bills, your ex, your deadlines
Or when you think you're gonna die?
Or did you long for the next distraction?
And all I need now is intellectual intercourse
A soul to dig the hole much deeper
And I have no concept of time other than it is flying
If only I could kill the killer
And all I really want is some peace, man
A place to find a common ground
And all I really want is a wavelength
Ahh...
And all I really want is some comfort
A way to get my hands untied
And all I really want is some justice
Ahh...

I like it despite myself.
Can't rate the lyrics, the tune is nothing special, and here voice often grates but for some reason...
it makes my toes tap - 8!

um.. wha?
Typically incomprehensible singing from the 'quite likable' Alanis.
Was she an auctioneer in a past life?

Not one of my fav's of hers....but love Alanis in general.....very sultry voice.
Now I finally know where Shakira took her voice lessons
Great vocals on this version.

Sorry haters - but the entire original album when it came out was a revelation - lyrically powerful feminism and great hooks. 9 for this song.

The original version has some bite to it, but this version is gorgeous... love it...
not too big a fan of alanis... but every now and then i hear something from her i like. this is one of those rare gems fo' sho'!
I really don't understand why there is so much HATE for Alanis. I can think of many other voices on Radio Paradise that I find much more grating (Bob Dylan or Van Morrison anyone?), and it's good for cranking up and rocking to. Whatever.
It's too bad that way too many people "long for the next distraction". She got it right in my book.

At least she could have spent the last 10 years actually learning how to play that dammed harmonica!
That's her?? I thought it was a 3 year-old.
And what I really want...is no Alanis.
Anyone who writes a song called 'Ironic' and fails to include one true example of said irony in the lyrics is suspect in my book.
Guess what, Alanis - coincidence or misfortune are not the same as irony ...

i always that was the best track on the original disk.
Or the least suckiest. :? But actually, I always had a soft spot for this song. I like this version--the strings sound kind of East Indian and her voice isn't as yelpy.

I mean, a ten year old album?
That's exactly what I thought. It's pretty sad when you have to cover yourself, no matter how good it was the first time. At least she could have spent the last 10 years actually learning how to play that dammed harmonica!
Well, she's ten years older, more experienced, wiser, and capable of utterly sucking in dimensions we never even knew existed. We thought she sucked back then . . . we had no idea.
Annoying ... please go away, Alanis
Shit Sandwich

Agreed!

:headshake:
I'll take the original, thank you.
hmm. i'm in line with the non-accoustic, over production comments but the song does sound decent like this. five and a half anyways
According to what I've heard so far, I like this acoustic ("unplugged") version of Jagged Little Pill quite a lot, but I doubt whether that album would've been that successful if it had been released done this way. Because I know the original recording (sort of a revelation at the time), I can appreciate these acoustic versions (more).
It wouldn't surprise me if this is an idea of the record company, because it isn't the most creative thing to do, but foremost commercialy interesting.
An interesting variation, yes. But it's nothing new.

Smells and sounds about as good as well.
Craptacular, in fact.
Didn't she used to have a career or something?

Sounds like Tim Buckley. I've heard this guy is good but I've never had a chance to hear him. So far so good.
