I'm coming over
See me down at the station
By the lane
With my hands in my pocket
Jingling a wish coin
That I stole from a fountain
That was drownin'
All the cares in the world
When I get older
Climbing up on the back porch fence
Just to see the dogs runnin'
With a ring and a question
And my shivering voice is singing
Through a crack in the window
Na na na na na, I better go it alone
Na na na na na, I better go it alone
Na na na na na
Down on the corner
See me standing
In a makeshift home
With a dust storm comin'
In a long black shadow
Pull a hammer from a coal mine
Down where your daddy was workin'
Comb my hair back
Strike a match on the bathroom wall
Where my number was written
Driving on the sidewalk
Lookin' back at the sky
It's burning in the rearview mirror
Na na na na na, I better go it alone
Na na na na na, I better go it alone
Na na na na na
Na na na na na na
Na na na na na na

Pointing to the dogs standin' firm
With a ring and a question
Dime-a-dozen
In a voice that was singing
Underneath the window
Na na na na na, I better go it alone
Na na na na na, I better go it alone
Na na na na na
I gotta go it alone
Don't go it alone
Doo doo doo doo

I've heard it reported that Mr. Hansen has said goodbye to Scientology; I guess he was ready to 'go it alone.'

Said before will say it again....Beck is SO underrated. He has created SO MANY great tracks, this is one of them.

Not just a cool song but cool production also. Big well done to the cats who mixed and mastered this album.

Whatever his belief system is...it doesn't really matter....it's his and not mine or yours, to be frank...let the man play, it's almost always good.
bad beck does exist, rare but there are a few.
I'm struggling to hear a bad Beck tune.
Love, Beck, but this is a weak track. Girl, that's the way to go.
Beck is cool and he's 4 days younger than me.
Thank god some coolness after a long break from coolness

Beck is an amazing artist. True to his vision. He follows no one but his own muse. A rare artist in this day and age (whether you like him or not). We need more folks like him out there to kill the "vertical music' marketing machime.
Farz I'm concerned, the best album of 2005, a year of several awesome releases.
Beck was great doing the self-depricating humour on Futurama!! Can't help but love his zany antics!

I sincerely hope, if that happens, that Beck wouldn't therefore try to take a stand and not play shows here (in Germany) anymore.

Anyway I like Beck a lot, too. Even though I absolutely despited Mellow Gold the first time I heard it back in 94, it seems like these days everything he's put out has grown on me.

It's been a long time since we were graced by the beauty of this tune.
Love it! - this one I haven't heard before but it is outstanding!!
Okay, I'm going to jump on the bandwagon and admit I like Beck, too.
And still with the freaky heads on the album cover.
They haunt me . . . and yet I cannot look away.
A reminder of why I got a subwoofer for my computer set-up.
I LOVE this album. And it's my first Beck album!
This song will be a hit.
This album is great!!! You must get it if you don't have it already.

Let's congratulate our DJ for that Pink Floyd -> Beck transition!!!!
This is one of my faves off the new album. Really like it when it changes.
I liked the bass & looked on the liner notes & it is Jack White playing bass.
I like Beck alot, and even like many of his songs that I don't like. But this just ain't doing jack for me.
Yes Bill, please play Hell Yes. :)
I remember there was a time I didn't think much of Beck. I mean, I liked the music, but considered it just another alt. sound. He started getting "big" when I was in Junior high (I know, that dates me).
However, I have been consistently impressed with em ever since.
Guero is such a great album.
This song is good, but it has nothing on Missing, Earthquake Weather and Hell Yes. Bill, please play Hell Yes. :D :D :D
grooooovy

Hm, I don't hear it. The main riff in Hey Ladies is Machine Gun by the Commodores.
Alright, the riff is 1:55-2:07 in "Go It Alone." And in the Beastie Boys video for "Hey Ladies" it's 2:08-2:24. (https://boss.streamos.com/download/capi001/beastieboys/heyladies/video/heyladies_v300.mov)
This was speculation until I actually found it in both songs. But I agree, I think I had jumbled it in my head because it had been a while since I had seen the video. It is similar, but now I merely think it's coincidence. My reason for thinking so was a.) Beastie Boys are one of Beck's influences, b.) Dust Brothers did both the Beastie Boys "Paul's Boutique" (which has "Hey Ladies") and Beck's "Guero" (Well, and Odelay, obviously.). And c.) The Beastie Boys actually helped compose "E-Pro."
I just drew a quick conclusion that it was probably an homage.

Interesting tid bit, I can't remember if it was one the album version or not, but in the music video for "Hey Ladies" by the Beastie Boys, the same riff is used as in this song. It's the part where the guitar really picks up just for a brief moment.

I AM TOTALLY FIRED UP. I ALSO AGREE THAT I LIKE THE MELLOWER MORE INTROSPECTIVE BECK ALBUMS, MUTATIONS / SEA CHANGES. WHAT I HEARD OF THIS ONE IS COOL B/C IT SEEMS LIKE A COMBO OF SEA CHANGE AND MIDNIGHT VULTURES / ODELAY.
I AM FIRED UP!
DID YOU GUYS CHECK HIM OUR WHEN THE FLAMING LIPS WAS HIS BACKING BAND? THAT WAS ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS I HAVE EVER SEEN AND I HAVE SEEN ALOT.
yogaboat wrote:
What's a good one to start with, Beck faithful?
Depends on "which Beck" you like best. I'd say Guero is 2 parts Odelay, 1 part Mutations, and a dash of Midnight Vultures.
All Becks' albums are good to me, but I'd say you're most likely to like the above and Sea Change. Mellow Gold is a bit raw, but is awesome. Delving a little deeper ...I really like Stereopathetic Soulmanure, as it's the most eclectic and very raw. One Foot In The Grave is a bit more mellow bluesy/folksy. The most obscure records are Golden Feelings, A Western Harvest Field By Moonlight, and Banjo Story (I may be missing some pseudo releases). You might want to hold off on these 5 though until you're "into" what he does.
My shorter answer is start with Odelay, then go to Mutations, then listen to Sea Change.
yogaboat wrote:
Ok that does it. I MUST add some Beck to my collection. This guy is fabulous. What's a good one to start with, Beck faithful?
Wow, that's a tough thing to do -- Beck is all over the board, so it depends on what flavor of him you like. Others may disagree with this, but I think Odelay! has about as rounded a selection as you'll find in a Beck release. Hard-hitting Devil's Haircut and Novocaine, twangy Canceled Check, groovy Where It's At!, dreamy Jackass... Much variety, even as Beck goes. Though from what I've heard so far Guero might equal it in variety. But once you decide what flavor of Beck you prefer, that can guide you in what other releases you would probably like.
Beck is back!!!
it would never occur to me to buy a Beck CD, but every time I randomly hear a Beck song - including this one - I really like it!
Ok that does it. I MUST add some Beck to my collection. This guy is fabulous. What's a good one to start with, Beck faithful?

Maybe not, but it's still a great song and this new album in total is excellent. There are so many good Beck songs from Banjo Story through Guero, it's just amazing.
I got a "leaked" copy of this album a few months back, I have only listened to it once and I keep forgetting to listen to it again.

Rock on, Beck!
I'm struggling to hear a bad Beck tune.
That doesn't seem like a good use of your effort.
