Fat man sitting on a little stool
Takes the money from my hand while his eyes take a walk all over you
Hands me the ticket smiles and whispers good luck
Cuddle up angel cuddle up my little dove
We'll ride down baby into this tunnel of love
I can feel the soft silk of your blouse
And them soft thrills in our little fun house
Then the lights go out and it's just the three of us
You me and all that stuff we're so scared of
Gotta ride down baby into this tunnel of love
There's a crazy mirror showing us both in 5-D
I'm laughing at you you're laughing at me
There's a room of shadows that gets so dark brother
It's easy for two people to lose each other in this tunnel of love
it ought to be easy ought to be simple enough
Man meets woman and they fall in love
But the house is haunted and the ride gets rough
And you've got to learn to live with what you can't rise above if you want to ride on down in through this tunnel of love
Takes the money from my hand while his eyes take a walk all over you

this was his divorce album. Not sure of the timing exactly but I think he was trying to sort out why the marriage (to Julianne Phillips) was not working. Like a lot of really great songs, it manages to be epic and intimate at the same time.
Why do I admire Mr Springsteen? Even with all the macho, Jersey tough guy attitude in his lyrics, he comes up with this line:
Then the lights go out and it's just the three of us; you me and all that stuff we're so scared of.

This epitomizes why I love this man's music... it's got everything, catchy hooks, irresistible beat, painterly lyrics, undeniable passion, a real sense of time and place... Bruce takes us on a dark and dreamy amusement ride... it's really pop music at its finest.
Never much dug this Reagan Era "Americana" phase of his career. I mean, the guys from Mook Filled Jersey. What's he singin about in that fake vaguely Middle American accent. Mellencamp did it better ferchrissakes

This entire album is great.

That encapsulates every roadie working every amusement park ever. Poetry.

Great song, great album.
Lots of ratings and pretty high for a never played tune. Maybe some day ... This song is the essence of Springsteen, The Boardwalk on The Jersey Shore. Its all there.
This song is soooo good for the ears...
Atlantic City is another great Springsteen song...
The Tunnel of Love album is a far distance from the Nebraska album but that's cool. ToL isn't terribly memorable though.
