Yeah, dementia. First off, this 1996 track is 25 - 26 years past. Second, even if recorded YESTERDAY, I think playing the axe like that boots any suspicion he's "getting on a bit", except like me, who is getting a bit low on patience with silly comments like these. Third--regardless of those lyrics--being quite familiar with Knopfler, to me that guitar part sounds more like a "bit" of frivolously serious practice rather than a full and lovely solo run (like Darling Pretty, off the same album, recorded at all of 50, when he was "getting on"). Fourth, please share with us RPers the luminous poetry of your lyrics. Otherwise, please take another biscuit.
"Otherwise, please take another biscuit."

For the doubters, go look at the lyrics for "Tunnel of Love", "Telegraph Road", "Skateway". He may have tired of writing lyrics on this tune but not in the DS records.
Maybe he doesn't want the 'easy' installments... ;-)
Well, that's a take I hadn't thought of. You may be correct.
I like this song, but don't get the lyrics. Is he insinuating that he wants to steal the car rather than buy it?

Who cares about the lyrics? listen to the guitar!

There's a track Long Way from the Clyde that gets some play around these parts...by Mr. Knopfler...that will pretty much destroy this comment.
Consider yourself smote...

We all need each other. It is good to hear everyone's thoughts and feelings. Please keep them coming.

Forget it Tom, it's guitar - town!
absolutely!!!
It would have been nice if Mark & JJ could have worked together. : (
Googling the two, I found this gem which offers and explanation https://www.americanbluesscene...
wellll... go look at the lyrics from the first few Dire Straits records. Quite different.

Dig the drumming too. Lots to like here. Thanks again RP!

Do you believe your opinion is so important to fans that you need to apologize?
It is a bit too formulaic "paint by numbers" effort from Mark Knopfler to my ears.
Just a 6 from me.
Superb!!!
This song proves Chad Cromwell is technically the best drummer Mark ever had the pleasure to work with. After Mark's fourth solo album "Our Shangri-La" they parted ways, regrettably. Nowadays i believe Chad is Neil Young's primary drummer.
Cromwell is definitely a bad ass but go back and listen to some of the DS albums that Pick Withers plays on. Withers is a bit more subtle but technical with a groove.
Let me know
Agreed, though I would also put up "Speedway at Nazareth" as a rebuttal to the lyric complaints, or any other song from that album.
If we want to hear a good guitarist, why no Gov't Mule (Warren Haynes) on RT?
"Cannibals" and "Darling Pretty" are in the library and both are good ones, too.
I second that! This is a very good album and deserves some more play. Then again, I like just about everything by Mark Knopfler so keep that in mind too.
I don't get this. Why is this better than a Chris Rea song? In fact, this is a Chris Rea song, no?
There's a lot of Mark Knopfler out there, but I'm wondering why. It fails to grow on me. Please tell me, what feature redeems this tune?
Maybe you missed the lyrics to this very song: "I don't wanna dream your dream." He really doesn't care what you think; he's dreaming his own dream.

My toes went ballistic and I did the air dance in the chair. Where is that Mark that put out some really
kick butt music ? Interesting direction into ballads, but he must have a R&R soul down there somewhere, because
he is so good at it. I believe you can grow old gracefully while playing R&R all the way to when your heart
explodes. If ya got it ya got it .. . Rock on you gray devils.. You have to wonder if Jagger wears a truss, and why
Richards looks like he stuck his head out of a 90 mph car into a flock of turkeys and took several direct hits. I guess some of us are just lucky to grow old, the "graceful" part is just *self-delusion.

I hope I can play rock and roll and blues (guitar) until I depart this earth. Too many ballads bore me to tears.

< Amen to that. Worst lyricist ever, just play your guitar dude. Maybe let somebody else write the lyrics from time to time.>
Maybe Sonny Landreth needs another guitar in the band (see "Congo Square"), or maybe he can join Brian Ferry (see "Boys and Girls") for another album.
Yeah...Mark is a player...listen to the instrument, enjoy the music and relax. The guitar at the end of this is lovely.

True enough, though strangely a dog's dinner or a dog's breakfast is a disaster. Strange thing, English English, even to us native speakers
Ok, not yer man's most lyrically complex song, but fun enough.
Is "bollocks" a "bad" word?
This is a funny, right? If not, rough Spanish eqivalent is cojones.
