Shake your beads out,
One by one
And call me Magdalene
It won't grieve me
I understand
Where it is you're coming from
Draw a curtain
Close your eyes
When history's pages fail you.
I will not open up those history books
That's not for me to do.
Precious little in your life
Is yours by right
And won without a fight
Precious little in your life
Is yours by right
And won without a fight.
Shadows call me,
In the wind
Some don't go away
Angels guide me
From the clouds
In everything I do and say
Shake your beads out
Kneeling down
It will not pass me by
Two people coming from a different place
Maybe neither one is right.
Repeat CHORUS
Shake your beads out
Join your hands
That still won't make you right
Those so-called sinners that you're praying for
Are standing by your side
Repeat CHORUS

This is easily a 10 for me and has been since the first time I ever heard it. Which was of course here on RP...
“Those so-called sinners that you're praying for
Are standing by your side”
Wow, this really speaks to me!

Lovely to hear an Irish voice on New Year's Day 2022.
"Precious little in your life
Is yours by right
And won without a fight."
Wise words. pxd
remember hearing this back in 96... good tune!
Builds to that most excellent horns finale. Fine song, most fine.
If I had to guess at the artist, I would say Tasmin Archer; music is pretty close, voice a little less so.
Could have sworn this was Everything But The Girl.
Wonderful song and wonderful artist, keep it (and her) playing!
Of course I could say that about 90% of what you play. Thank you, Bill and Rebecca!

OMG! Haven’t heard this in FOREVER!!
This is why I dip into RP!!
Thanks Bill!!!
"she attended Trinity College, Dublin where she studied music by day and worked in pit orchestras and music clubs by night. McEvoy graduated from Trinity with an Honors Degree in music, and spent four months busking in New York City"
I had to look up 'busking'. Props to her for an eclectic, gritty background and busting her a** it sounds like to become "good enough" for RP. 7-->8 for now. Prolly 9 in a bit.

Holds up over time
Love love love this song.
I've heard this before but didn't hear it. I like it. Gimme 7.
What's following you? Well, gee, maybe this guy.

Of all the older songs to resuscitate from the archives, I'm glad you pull this one out every so often!

I've heard this a hundred times but never bothered to look at who it was. When I saw this artist/song title in the Now Playing window, I thought to myself "hey, a new song from someone I've never heard of!" Turned up the volume and oh. Oh.

Trumpet is interesting. Whoever is making that poor guitar make that sound, oughta' give the guitar a shot at wh00pin' his / her arse.
Anyone who can rock a trumpet solo is all right in my book!
When this comes on I automatically think it's the Indigo Girls.
most excellent indeed
Fantastic song! Classic.

I never heard of Eleanor McEvoy before, but thats what I love about radio in general and RP especially... Just gave this a 9. Need to hear more from her...
I've been following her since hearing her on the Woman's Heart CD and tour back in the '90s. She's developed really well since
I've been hearing this off and on since my RP day 1 (or maybe 2 or 3) and never commented how much I've grown to like it over the years. Quite in contrast to some others that have gone the other way for me.

I forgot how much I love this song. I haven't heard it in 13 years!
My rating keeps going up on this song. 6, then 7, now 8

What a timeless great song this is, I have always loved it!
this song makes me visualize some "getting past a difficult obstacle for a 30something divorcee'- montage" scene in a movie....

Thanks Bill! This has been a favorite since I first heard it on RP, five or six years ago. :)
Sort of evokes the best elements of 80s pop. I like this a LOT - 8

I was very surprised to click on the album to find out this is 13 years old. Wow. It's timeless.
From the RP oldies vault, nice timing. Haven't heard this in a looooong time. Thanks

Fantastic!

This song is pretty good,....at first though, I thought she sang 'Sh_t your brains out".....That cracked me up!!
This is a favourite RP play, I was very disappointed last month at being unable to make it down the road to Eleanor's gig at the Real Music Club and hear what she's playing now.
haven't heard this since high school....
good song :)
Nice new find... I hear a little of Beth Orton in her voice.
Funky ....

You're right, Koan. I hear Mae Moore here, too. Which is, as Martha might say, a good thing.
Is Mae Moore known at all outside Canada -- and even here anymore? Her older work is excellent, especially the album Dragonfly.
Oh, gosh, Dragonfly is one of my favorite albums. I would hate to think that May Moore has vanished here in the States.
I like McEvoy's voice and writing. I used this very song on a mix CD for a friend's wedding reception and it got a lot of compliments.
I hear a bit of Tracy Thorn (Everything But The Girl)
/before it gets poppy
//but I like the trumpets

Right about the combination. I had to check the playlist because I couldn't believe this wasn't Mae Moore. Vocally, lyrically, the music as described above, all sounds like something Moore might have done a little over ten years ago. Not sure how into it I am now but I'm willing to hear this track some more.
Reminds me of Bell, Book and Candle...mostly because of the lead singer.
Song is enjoyable, another RP discovery.
If the Indogo Girls could learn to write something really catchy, they could someday sound like this.
This is excellent. This girls voice is real interesting. Yummy like homemade bread.
Deja vu....
Bill's programming does show a little bit of repetition but in this case it's entirely welcome - the LZ Thank You segues nicely into this from Eleanor McEvoy.
I guess it's impossible not to repeat some back to back selections esp when he's programming so carefully and I do enjoy it so.
Feuw... at first thought we were going to hear Prince
Great follow up to the amazing outtrow on Led Zeppelin's Thank You. Organs to Organs. Definitely need more Organs.
. . . and you're a dick.

Its that little twinge of sadness when you subconciously realize college days will never return. Too much music does that to me

Nice little tune.
Edit: Hearing it again, it's even more than a nice little tune. Has a great 60s-type pop groove with interesting lyrics. I like it a lot.
One of those songs that picks you up when you need a Red Bull buzz!
It's a nice song, from a nice voice. She looks like the kind of woman you would meet in a pub and have a wonderful relationship with.
Nice, very nice-it is what it is.

A nice little bit of inspiro-pop fluff. Fun!
As Brian Wilson would say, "Guitars and horns.... wow! What a sound!"
Says a thief maybe.

Perfect singalong, poprock song! The leadguitar sound and solo is quite similar to the one in Fleedwood Mac's Go Your Own Way. Steal/borrow(?) from the best .

Did someone do a remake of this song? Or is it a remake? Why have I heard this in another voice? Or am I delusional?

MMmmm Shakey's Pizza...
Nice.
Reminds me of 10,000 Maniacs and Thea Gilmore.
Decent.... And probably "trite" not per the message but the mode. There are more lyrically clever songs that deliver the same message. "Trite" might be a little strong, though, because it's so dismissive.

Basically it's saying that you're owed nothing by the world, and if you do want something, you have to earn it. How's that trite?

Very nice...like a more-on-key Michelle Shocked with brass. Excellent.

What I said before, but I want to add that I think the message in this song is so true. Precious little in your life is yours by right and won without a fight!
How about some more recent Eleanor McEvoy stuff? I listened to her segment on FolkScene recently, and her newer stuff is very different to this (not to say I don\'t like this song, I do...)
