Bad luck, Florida-style. At first the coroner thought the guy had drowned but no.

Kids: don't do meth near the water or alligators! Stay safe and addicted!

Florida man found eaten by alligator actually died from meth overdose, officials say

The Florida man who was found partially eaten by an alligator earlier this year died from a meth overdose — not a gator attack, as was speculated, according to autopsy results.

It's not the new site that's broken.  This bug/feature has been around as long as I've been here and is obviously in code that is common to both sites.  As rarely as it crops up I don't think I'd spend much time looking for it either.

Bizarre. On the old site, I simply places the copied url between url brackets and it worked fine.

It works fine in previews, the substitution is not made until the post is actually submitted.  It's not just URLs either.  You can't actually get two consecutive minus signs to appear anywhere in a post.   It's fine with a space between them "- -", but put them together and it comes out "—"(this actually was two minus signs every time I previewed it). I've tried single quotes, double quotes, using character codes, and every other standard technique I know but to no avail.  There is just no way to get minus sign minus sign to print anywhere on this site.  It doesn't cause much of a problem with normal text and in fact is kind of a nice feature there, but it kills URLs.  You just have to notice it and create an alias for the URL.

It  seems to only happen when there are two hyphens (or 2 minus signs) in the URL - they get re-interpreted as an m-spaced dash.  It's similar to how some word processing programs interpret two dashes as an m-dash or turn three consecutive periods into an ellipsis.  It would do that on the older site too but , like P_SOB said, it's uncommon; most URLs don't have those problem characters.

Your link doesn't work because its URL contains two consecutive minus signs and no matter what you do the RP text editor is going to convert them into an m dash when the page is rendered.  The only work around I know of is to use something like tinyURL to create another URL that that redirects to the one you want.  Like this.

Naked Women Lead Cops On High-Speed Chases

Trio claimed to be “air drying” near Interstate 75

APRIL 11—Three naked women fresh from "showering" at a Florida rest area told cops they were “air drying” in public when spotted by a witness who called 911, precipitating high-speed chases that resulted in the trio’s arrest on multiple felony charges.

The witness, cops say, reported that the women were at an Interstate 75 rest stop Wednesday morning, and that “all three of them” were “standing in the nude putting on suntan lotion.”

When a Florida Highway Patrol trooper arrived at the rest stop, the naked women explained that they had simply been “air drying” in the nude after showering. One woman said that the trio had spent the night at the rest area after leaving a local residence “due to an altercation.”

With no bathing facilities available, they opted for al fresco showers on a lawn. A trooper noted that a case of water and a bottle of soap was on the ground next to the suspects.

Florida man threatens to destroy everyone... with army of turtles

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. - A Florida man is ready to wreak havoc on the planet, and he's bringing some friends along to help.

Very small, ssssslllllooooowwwww-moving friends.

Thomas Devaney Lane, 61, was arrested for causing a disturbance while threatening to "destroy everyone" with his army of turtles.

Lane first started causing trouble at various establishments in Indiatlantic. At least seven calls to 911 were made about Lane's behavior, WKMG reports.

Police later apprehended Lane and escorted him to department headquarters, where he began yelling at the dispatcher and pounding on the walls and glass.

After leaving the police department, Lane went to a nearby 7-Eleven. It was there that Lane harrassed employees and even called 911, saying “I need to leave now or you will all be sorry you (expletive) with the saint,” according to the police affidavit.

Lane was located once again and arrested.
