It was not just plain wrong. No one can dispute Rose's statistical accomplishments as a player but institutions need standards. You say you don't like what he did as a manager (betting on games, i assume) but he eventually admitted doing it as a player as well. Let's not forget that he served time for tax evasion. And he admitted to having sex with a 16 year old (maybe not quite 16) while he was married with 2 children.
I know that many members of the HOF are not angels, but few are so publicly known as despicable as Rose. The HOF is totally justified to refuse to honor him.
In my opinion I think Pete should be in the Hall of Fame for what he did when he was a player and not for what he did as a manager. That's was just plain wrong to have kept him out.

Pete Rose dead at 83.

While we're in intermission, news dropped today that the Giants have fired Farhan Zaidi, the moneyball whiz kid they hired away from the Dodgers who hired him away from the Athletics. And are replacing him with Buster Posey!
One thing is for sure, in Zaire's 6 year tenure the Giants record has not been great.
Just read Sale has "day-to-day" back spasms. Meaning if the Braves are playing tomorrow, he'll be OK.
I don't understand how it would matter if the Mets won game 1 and Braves won game 2 (or vice versa)... but the Mets have to play San Diego and then LA if they win vs. the Braves having to play Milwaukee and then the Phillies. I'd much rather play Milwaukee/Philly vs. crossing the country with 3 time zones for both series.
Exactly. I assume the Mets will not show up for Game 2 so the Braves need to do a bullpen game. OR the Braves need to pull out all the stops to make sure they are playing tomorrow, then worry about tomorrow tomorrow. Right now is when managers earn (or not) their paycheck.
When everyone is using analytics, anyone rarely has much of an advantage. I think someone with a high baseball EQ like Posey is a really good choice for running a team.
Baseball is such a long, travel-heavy season, that personalities and culture are critical to making things work. I look at the Mets... who have had talent for years but always under-performed. It's not just numbers...it's how the team comes together. Posey was that kind of a player (the glue of the team)... and I think he can help build that again in SF.
Right, and Zaidi really fought against the idea that winning isn't everything. He hired Mike Yaz, and he's been a fan favorite. The thought of replacing him with someone with statistically better outcomes who's bounced around the league and isn't particularly likeable never mattered to Zaidi. He didn't want to sign Matt Chapman to a long contract but Posey understood that we like him and his approach to playing and don't want to see rent-a-players at every position.

I think the D-backs season depends on if the Braves start Chris Sales. Given that the Mets will be playing the bat-boys, I wonder if Atlanta should save Sales and see if they can get by the Mets with someone else. If they win with Sales and can't pitch him in a 3 game series... why bother?

Rightâso on paper, the Diamondbacks have a shot at the last wild card, but in reality this 2-game set will be a split. (only way the Dbacks get in is if either team wins both games)

Whichever team wins the first game could probably rest their whole starting line-up - unless there's some spite left over from the John Rocker days.

They're gonna need it... Braves up 3-0, Mets scored 6 in the top of the 8th, only to give up 4 in the bottom.
Heading to the 9th... 7-6 Braves. They desperately need to win, because they have no one to pitch tomorrow if Sale has to go in game 2.
The Mets have used everyone too. They will have no relief pitching tomorrow (if they make it).
As a Phillie fan, I'm always happy to see the Braves and Mets struggle... but this is a bit unfair. Playing 2 on Monday (while your playoff opponent is resting), and then having a best of 3 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday... is brutal.
EDIT: 8-7 Mets. 2-run homer in the top of the 9th.
Braves & Mets play a doubleheader tomorrow to determine the NL wild cards. If they split then they're both in the playoffs & AZ is out. Since the playoffs start the next day, the winner of game one tomorrow has no incentive other than to rest their pitchers. The bat boy may pitching game 2.

And on another note: has anybody seen a clip of 6 security guards at the Oakland game chasing some guy stealing the seating. My buddy heard it on Sports Radio and was telling me about it last night.
If anybody finds a clip of it please post it. I searched it last night to no avail and only found written posts of the happenings.
Thanks! A loyal Red Soxah Bleacher Creature.
Back when I lived there, the guards would be holding the gate open for you. I learned that when you get off BART, the ticket window is at the far end of the stadium, but you can give the guard at the bleacher gates a ticket with Alex Hamilton's photo on it and your whole group gets right in.
But they have one more game tonight, right? Might need a place to sit. THEN steal whatever's not nailed down.
Edit: Last game was today, A's won 3-2 over Texas Rangers.
I appreciate your input but, I'm talking about the yearly brouhaha that this was going to be the Sox's year at the start of the season that quickly faded to silence after reality set in years ago. We've been talking baseball in here for 20 plus years.
??
I don't read this thread much, admittedly. I was/am just surprised that Red Sox fans had anything to chirp about here for the past 3 seasons. AFAICT Boston hasn't fielded a credible playoff-worthy team in that time. They did get to the ALCS in '21—I remember posting here about that—but the the Astros handled them pretty easily. Since then, it's not been pretty.
