Eisenhower was courted to run for Prez by both parties.  He was so (publically) politically neutral and popular, he would have been elected no matter which side he ran on.  That's how we ended up with Stevenson as his opponent.  Sorta like Dole vs Clinton.  Dole was merely a sacrificial lamb as was Stevenson.

 Lincoln who was a "Radical" Republican.  The GOP got bought off in the 1870's by Big Businesss monopolists. 

Teddy Roosevelt who was had to quit the Republican party because he busted up the big monopolies. He was the 1st to enforce the Sherman Anti-Trust Act.

Eisenhower who warned us of the dangers of the Military Industrial Complex and raise dthe taxes on the rich from 90% to 92% at one point. You should read the letter he wrote to his brother sometime. Wow, the guy was way more Progressive than Clinton or Obama. Very unusual Republican.
