See, here's where my opinion differs from so many others.  I don't see the ABB being a Southern Rock band at all.  They're a Blues Rock band to me, and no other "Southern Rock" band had a sound that was even close.  I think of Southern Rock as a particular style/sound.  To me, it sounds like .38 Special, Molly Hatchet, Marshall Tucker, Black Oak Arkansas, and the Kings of the genre - Lynryd Skynyrd.  I dislike pretty much all of that stuff.  It's just not a sound that appeals to me.  ABB, though, are most definitely one of my favorite bands of all time.  I would place them in the same Blues Rock genre with Paul Butterfield, Peter Green, Yardbirds, Johnny Winter, Canned Heat, etc.  In fact, if a legitimate argument can be made that ABB is more closely related to Skynyrd than John Mayall, I'll just piss in my hat, turn over the tables and, then, go quietly.

hmmm.... I shall ruminate upon your theory.  interesting.

Since when did geography dictate musical quality???? There was a lot of high quality southern rock created in the 70's. I believe the whole Southern Rock genres perception takes a hit based upon the demographic makeup of the fans; ya know the long sleeved concert shirt wearing, long haired, uneducated, blue collar and usually somewhat bigoted southern white male. Just because a large base of the fans of a genre of music may be somewhat musically ignorant and close minded, it does not preclude that the entire genre has not produced some creative, innovative and technically sound songs and groups such as The Allman Brothers, Lynryd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Elvin Bishop, Marshall Tucker Band, The Outlaws and many, many more. Now, Southern rock is not one of my fav genres (I don't even like the Allman Brothers!{#Eek}) and there was a lot of crap produced as well, but the same could be said of any genre.{#Yes} Oh and BTW, The Allman Brothers most certainly are Southern Rock, to call them anything else would be a misclassification. I have now descended from the soap box and am blending back into the crowd.{#Meditate}

Mine too.  Not only did they invent it, the original incarnation of the band recorded the stuff that is still head & shoulders above anything anyone else has ever done in that genre.

Bassist Berry Oakley prayed over his friend, asking God to give Allman one more year of life.

Allman made an astounding recovery, but exactly one year later on Oct. 29, 1971, Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident at the Macon crossroads of Inverness and Bartlett Avenue. About a year and a couple weeks later, Oakley would meet the same fate, dying in a motorcycle accident at the same crossroads of Inverness and Bartlett Avenue in Macon.

What a peculiar story and fitting photo to go with it! Thanks, I'll use a translation for my weblog. I also read that Berry Oakley was buried beside Duane Allman.

Duane Allman slammed his foot down on the kick-start of his Harley Davidson Sportster motorcycle on an autumn evening 38 years ago today in Macon, Georgia. A few miles down the road, he clipped the rear end of a flatbed truck, sustaining fatal injuries.

i have ridden sportsters back then
terrible brakes
squeeeeeeeze as hard as you can and hope

bet the truck ran the stop sign
just guessin

edit : just read the wiki
truck turned it front of him and stopped ...

Duane's slide guitar and the indescribably awesome music the ABB made were a huge part of my musical youth.  I remember visiting The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland in '04 and seeing two of his guitars in a glass case.  It was the moment of that trip for me and literally brought tears to my eyes.

RIP Duane. {#Cheers}
