Radio Paradise

A good friend in college once remarked to me that he always felt he was trying to grow up to be Rob Petrie, and that I was doing that, too.

He mentioned that as we sat together writing a comedy program for the radio.

And I went on to marry a hot babe that would look smashing in capri pants!

Here comes the obscure: And, I have a neighbor that I have to write a check to each month so he'll stay my friend, because of the giant rock in the basement.

I think they were lacking the ability to build story lines around women, because all women did were stay home and be homemakers. Women were boring. Except on Andy Griffith who, I think, had a phone operator and a teacher.

I know that television writers often pattern their plot lines after certain demographic groups and target those groups as viewers, but were there really that many orphans or widowers back in those days? Maybe it was more acceptable back then to write in a dead mother or dead parents than it was to write in a divorced father. Maybe part of it is to show the struggles of being a single parent, but it wasn't until the 1970's that a program featured a single mother, and she was divorced, not widowed. The other thing is that only on "Andy Griffith" and "Eddie's Father" did the child ever ask about his deceased mother. Maybe it happened on other shows, but I didn't watch all of them (I particularly disliked The Brady Bunch, even as a child). Anyhow, it's just one of things I've wondered about. One other thing is: What the hell did Ward Cleaver do for a living? He always went "to the office" in his suit and tie, but he never spoke much about what he did. Though I didn't watch that show too much either.

Steve Douglas (Fred McMurray) did get married just as 'My Three Sons' was about running out of gas as a show. There was an annoying step-daughter added in as well. I didn't realize that the William Frawley character was their grandfather. What happened to him? And how did they replace him with the terminally PO'ed Uncle Charlie? I heard that he wasn't really their uncle and that he was an old family friend that was living the rugged, alcoholic ex-saior's life in the rundown part of town when Fred McMurray invited him to stay with him and the boys. Why would someone like that want to live with another guy and three teenaged boys? One other thing: what happened to Mike? It seems he got married and he was forgotten about (no occasional special guest appearance like Don Knotts did a few times on Andy Griffith). So I guess Mike went the same way as Chucky Cunningham. I know. I know. It's just TV. I need to relax and roll with it.

I'm not sure what Ward Cleaver did. I would think insurance sales does sound like a good guess. He never talked about what he did. Everything in the office revolved around that bald guy, that played Mel Cooley on Dick Van Dyke, being a pompous schmuck.
