This is exactly the type of song I can't get enough of but my wife couldn't bare for 5 seconds.

Thanks be to the Great Cosmic Muffin that I'm still unsophisticated enough to rock out to Sonny!

Ditto. I love Sonny Landreth's music, and I was only introduced to it a couple of years ago, back when our local "adventurous" radio station, Coyote FM, played his stuff. (Now, adventure has caved in to classic rock, same as most other stations that depend on advertisements and sponsors. Pluh. Coyote FM went from "a work in progress" to "classic rock." Sellout. I'm disappointed beyond the telling.)

Hope he stays there, this is so boring.
This is incredibly dull.

Breaux Bridge. 128 miles west and a world away. Swamp rock, as an earlier poster commented. Thanks, Sonny.

I give it a higher rating than that, but I do have to agree that this track gets tiring in my personal mix, even when I only hear it every so often. There is something about Sonny's work that really makes the bolded statement above ring true. I suppose if I were 15 again that I'd be really into his stuff, but there's just so much more to listen to these days.

Indeed. Everyone, please send some support to Bill and Rebeca if you are not doing so already.

Thanks for getting it.  Sonny is on.  These detractors are living their fantasy world with no hope.

Dudes and Dudesses,

This guy kicks butt.  Not since Hendrix (I am an old dog), have I heard  the purity of the guitar howl.  If you don't get off on this,  you need a new drug....

Yikes! Had to turn the radio down some near the end. A bit too long!

I like Sonny, but this is just a guy who can play  with the guitar in his hands letting it do all the work. I do realize I've made a previous comment in this thread that "This boy can play" but that was over a year ago,I'm holding folks to a higher standard these days. If I know what  a guitarist is doing without thinking too hard, it means he 's being lazy.

Yeah, and a bit of Moving in Stereo by the Cars :-)

Plays a lot better than me, though, so I'm not criticizing.

Most excellent.

Noise.
Pure tedium ...
Pure original genius.
Bought this album thanks to RP, had to order it from my local record shop, and it was worth the wait, and more satisfying for that wait, and to have it in my hand, not simply to download it and move on to something else. This is one to savour. Thanks RP! Support record shops, they have humans working in them, that you can talk to... It's fun!
Self indulgent crap - endless and mindless. Virtuosity is one thing, but there needs to be structure as well to deliver a thoughtful composition. Anyone can get up there and just play.
Wow. Just wow. It got groove.
i was walking around and this song just grabbed me. got to do some catch up.

Awesome slide quitar. Have seen him play a few times..... John Hiatt and the Goners, solo in San Diego, Maple Leaf Club in New Orleans....home turf...This club was so shabby looking from the outside...inside cool. His show was a blast. This was just before the big hurricane so who knows now.
We had a family member get married at the Maple Leaf. Henry Gray played the wedding. Very, very cool! BTW, Maple Leaf survived the hurricane.

He's got his tour dates online at www.sonnylandreth.com. I highly recommend him live.

His gee tar is so distinctive.
Was this guy ever paired with Daniel Lanois?

An epiphone? I think you mean epiphany. LOL! I do agree that USS Zydecoldsmobile ROCKS!!!
borrrrrrrrrring
Swampy! Love the groove.
Ballsiest, bluesiest slide guitar around.
thanks bill this set has made a working saturday bearable...oh yeah, back to work!

Drop it down a key and put in some bass, and it's AC/DC's "Hell's Bells".
The man can play...Saw him with John Hiatt and part of the Goners!!!! Smoking set!!!
Good timing, I'll be seeing him in San Francisco in a few days!
Better than the other Landreth effort on RP.
Seems to be the hour of slide here at RP. How about some Johhny Winter or George Harrison?
Now THAT is one serious guitar player. Crank it!
I was gonna give this a 10, but I already did. Very talented musician!!
super song

He spent many years with John Hiatt.
This is great *but* i'd like to hear more rather than this one piece all the time...
I love how much Landreth gets played on RP! A good, solid 8.

Pretty good stuff, I find myself comparing him to Eric Johnson, who I have seen play live in Austin Tx. I would have to give the nod to Eric in a duel though; he has a bit more speed. To me, Sonny Landreth is like Nascar while Eric Johnson is like Formula 1.
I swear I occasionally hear the riff from The Cars' Living In Stereo in this song. Anyone else hear it or is it just me? Very nice.

Wonderful. Powerful and expressive. One of the best things I've discovered thanks to RP. Does anyone know what tuning he's using? It seems like a standard tuning, but I don't really know

What a great set. Love Sonny!
Anyone know how Sonny came out after Rita? It plowed right through where he lives (SW Louisiana). You can't play enough of him to suit me. Truly excellent.
Cool but annoying.

wow, cool. I had heard the name but never really heard too much.....thanks RP. A little dryer sound on the drums would accentuate the greezy guitar and keep the whole thing feeling more organic rather than slipping into that weird Eric Johnson zone where talent meets meaninglessness.
That's the longest (if most accurate) description of a lot of jazz I ever heard. . . .

I normally love the slide guitar but this is bit too intense for me. In fact I think I loved this song the first few times I heard it but it's become a bit grating after repeated listenings. I do think he's extremely talented though. He might try a version a bit mellower if possible. "New Landlord" is my favorite Landreth song. I used to play the trumpet and the classical guitar. I'm thinking of taking up the flugelhorn now.
What up, Fuh. First, I loved this song for about four weeks. Now it's a like, and it's declining, so my apologies to everyone who hates it. I don't agree, but I see where you're coming from. Also, I responded to YOUR post, but really, I was responding to the post to which you were responding. Olive juice. Also, regardless of circumstances, my response was harsh. Hilarious, but harsh.

Never heard him before - but I've got to admit I like despite the somewhat repetitive riffs. A little Vai & Jeff Beck in there as well.....

What? NOT Stevie Ray? Who the heck is this guy? Cool!
Don't kick me in the teeth, but I like this better than anything I've ever heard from Stevie Ray. That's neither to imply a) all Landreth's stuff is better than Stevie Ray's, nor b) the possibility that I'm just burnt out on SRV after a lifetime of enjoying him. But this song rocks my casbah.
Sonny certainly has unique tones--no one else seems to be on his path, and that's okay.
I prefer to think of it a "greasy", but in a very good way. (And for the purists out there, it'd actually be pronounced "greezy", considering it's from Louisiana and all.) As others have mentioned, he's actually scary accurate and tight with his playing, but the sound sorta oozes out and smacks you around a bit. It's all good.
That's what I meant, not messy as in all over the place, just messy as in, so how much do you want then, here it comes and there's more, loosey goosey, ya know, like in a mess of FOOD.

Awesome! Messy is not a word I would use to describe his playing. Quite technical and unique. I'm looking forward to seeing Sonny at the Ottawa Bluesfest again this summer - his live show is amazing.
Kickass! First time I heard him was a live track with Kenny Loggins doing angry eyes. Any chance we can hear that? As always, great artists on RP.
Go, Looziana!
Great groove...!!! Reminded me of a great Arizona band Major Lingo... :sunny.gif:
after the first few notes I knew this was Sonny and I don't know that many of his songs. I guess his style is quite recognizable, to me at least

Thats exactly what just happened to me :)
Great control there. He moves fast enough that it might seem messy....but I'm willing to bet if you were watching him, it would become rapidly obvious that he knows *exactly* where his hands are at all times.
8)
My GOD that's cool. Not messy at all, IMO. Very precise. He seems to be hovering near the target, a technique that requires quite a bit of control to make sense. But he's an ACE at starting and stopping on the note structure he's aiming for. Wow. Just... WOW.
g1lgam3sh wrote:

He may be "messy" but there are PLENTY of musicians who want him playing backup on their albums. He is phenomenally talented. Of course, I'm prejudiced, since he is a native Louisianian.
This song made me come in from the other room to see who it was. Nice cut. Thanks Bill & Rebecca.
