Well the prize was right there underneath our eyeballs
And when it all came down we were looking for the pitfalls
Until Junie said baby get yourself to going
And we were so far gone we had no way of knowing
Everybody went low
Everybody went low
Everybody went low
Well she was pretty as a junebug jumpy as a nerve end
And when she pulled the rug out my tires started swerving
And I was driving through the living room driving through the basement
Looking for the lowest spot in the pavement
Everybody went low
Everybody went low
Everybody went low
Everybody went low
Nothing there to corrupt you
Nothing there to live up to
There's no place further down
Turn it off or turn around
Well I was coming up for air I heard somebody breathing
And it was Junie Bug praying harder than a heathen
And she was smiling like the sole survivor in a lifeboat
Said if I jump in Junie do you think this thing will still float
Everybody went low
Everybody went low
Everybody went low
Everybody went low
Low, low low...
And when it all came down we were looking for the pitfalls
Until Junie said baby get yourself to going
And we were so far gone we had no way of knowing
Everybody went low
Everybody went low
Everybody went low
Well she was pretty as a junebug jumpy as a nerve end

Everybody went low

Low, low low...

Is that Sonny Landreth on this one?

Perhaps especially this one. Fun lyrics and a bopping track.

I already said this:
HIATT is a good musician,
with good albums,
and good songs,
But (!!) - it seems he is never really able
to find the right groove,
the perfect melody
and never
really reaches the level that is necessary
to have that perfect song - one to remember!
HIATT is the 80%-man!

I love John Hiatt's music. Yeah, his voice is like a chainsaw that needs oil, but that's part of the beauty of it. And this song... I haven't heard it in a long time, so I'm dancing.
Comments like yours, perhaps?

I don't get it. Why does Bill play this hillbilly music, but pretty much ignores Lynyrd Skynyrd.

His new(er) album "Same Old Man" is excellent, highly recommended if you're a Hiatt fan.

I was fortunate to see John Hiatt & Matthew Sweet perform a show together for a short lived VH1 program (I think it was called "Duets"). It was filmed at Los Angeles Union Station... the place had great acoustics! Was always a John Hiatt fan... this show cemented my like for him!
I saw him at a small venue after the Riding With The King album... just him and his guitar. Fantastic!! Great performer.
great rhythm . . . oh and followed by some zep.
nice.
Playing tonight at the Portland Blues Fest...Can't wait....The guy still rocks....
Love JH. This is one of my least favorite cuts, though. If you get the chance, GO SEE HIM. He came to Greenville SC last year in a solo show and was fanfreakintastic. We went out to the bus after the show and took some pics. My wife said he has a soft back. HA. He said he has a bad back now from standing and performing all these years. First heard him on "The Phoenix" out of Nashville (RIP) doing "Before I go" and my first thought was "who told this guy he could sing?" but it grew on me, and then i discovered all his other music, etc. Great artist.
Wooohooo! A Colorado local.

I will toot my horn for a moment. I discovered John Hiatt way back in 1978 when nobody new him from Adam. For several years his record company didn't know what to do with him and then New Wave music became the rage and John was marketed in that slot. He didn't start to get any measure of success until after critical reviews of Bring The Family in '87 and then decent sales of Slow Turning in '88 made people start to pay attention. The general public may have just gotten hip to him but other artists were already lining up to cover his songs for some time so I new I was onto something. Still, It took an outlet like RP to provide me with a regular source of a Hiatt diet other than from my own collection. Kudos!
To top it off, I just turned my neighbor onto Hiatt and that's all he listens to now.
Hey, Thanks! He's one of the funniest composers out there. Fun lyrics. Subtle rythyms - Never have seen him live, but I'll bet his stuff comes off even better in a bar. ;-) Just kiddin', mostly raise a glass to quaf!

Fargin' rockin'. Can't help but tap the toes to this one. And sway the head. And...
My foot is tapping, but this song still sounds like a pile of poop.

No, 'cause that would mean John Hiatt also owes his entire career to Mitch Ryder, the Stones, and General Motors.
one of his better real rock tunes. still, his "perfectly good guitar" phase of trying to rock out kinda always misses the mark. i like it when he sticks to the alt-country-memphis-blues thing. any hiatt is better than most...
Can you say BOB SEGER WANNABE?
God, I love this song! :sunny.gif:

Gets better every time.
Nice choice... this rocks!
I love John Hiatt - had a chance to see him at the L.B. Day Amphitheatre in Salem Oregon on a triple-bill with the Robert Cray Band and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Hiatt stole the show - no mean feat, with the likes of the late, great Stevie Ray stompin' on the same stage.
Current favorite songs by Hiatt: "Memphis in the Meantime" ("...after we get good and greasy, baby, we can just go home - put the cowhorns back on the Cadillac and change the message on the code-a-phone..."), "Drive South," "The Wreck of the Barbie Ferrarri," "Slow Turning," and "Just Like Your Dad Did" ("Help the starving people to get well - but let my brother's hamster burn in hell.")
Yep - Hiatt is the man. Out of 44 comments, I only counted two negatives (probably from people who have automatic slam-shut doors on their minds or think that Tori Amos IS Kate Bush.)
John ROCKS!!!!
YEAH!

I know I've already commented on this song, but even after hearing it off and on for the past year or so, I can't help but crank up the volume and doing the happy feet thing every time I hear it. Not all of John Hiatt's stuff moves me, but this song sends me flying.
(It's hard to get any work done when my head's bobbing like this.)

Something about John Hiatt's voice really gets to me. Must be a negative association. Nevertheless it seems to be my luck that every time I tune in he is cued up to play!

I nearly dislocated both legs tappin' to this one

This song seems to pick up my spirits every time I hear it. Hard not to tap your feet and bob your head up and down when it comes on.

butt rockin\' great song!
Another song that, for reasons I don't understand, I love. Thanks RP! Just makes me want to dance or somethin'.
Hiatt is never dreck, period.
Jeez! The combo of Sam Phillips, \"Go Down,\" Greg Brown, \"Who Woulda Thunk It,\" and John Hiatt, \"Everybody Went Low\" made me run to change the channel.
Complete dreck three times in a row.
John H is REALLY fun to watch in concert. Catch him if you ever get the chance.
John Hiatt with Sonny Landreth and the Goners. It don\'t get much better. I think \"wen\'t low\" has something to do with racing, or so I\'ve heard.
If you ever wondered where everybody went, you should know by now.
:D Happy, happy, happy!
This is a great card game song. Especially when you're playing hearts and you're getting screwed....
I love the sound of this tune, the band, sound-bytes like \"I heard somebody breathing, it was Junie Bug praying harder than a heathen\", ... but I just can\'t figure out what \"Everybody Went Low\" is supposed to be about! Can somebody enlighten me?
Simply put - This song rocks.
