Heard a shout of someone calling,
Strange and darkness.
People lack all feelings
Over the city tonight.
Hanging by behind the trees of,
Blood red mornings.
Watching all this waiting for you
Dread in my head.
Where the wind sings by the river
Laughing, broken.
Hair swept out into the water,
Ripples of black.
Run, you better run,
You better run for your life.
Oh it rips through the sky.
Oh life figures on.
Jo, I know you will see.
Don't wait for a minute.
Shiver while you breathing
All the while you breath land
(Oh you see winter)
Shiver while you breathing
All the while I breath land
Feel the grey at dawn meaning,
Sunset, spoken.
Where the wind sits by the river,
Ripples of black.
Days, you gotta run
You gotta run for your life
Oh your light feel you breath
Don't run with me.
Oh they'll leave you breath.
Don't wait for a minute.
Strange and darkness.
People lack all feelings
Over the city tonight.
Hanging by behind the trees of,

This song sucks me in every time. Alison's vocals are superb. And when the layered vocals kick in...I melt into nothingness. Brilliant song.
After more than ten years, I am still struck with awe at this song... One of the very best exhibitions of the human voice as an instrument perhaps without equal...

OVO is the Gabriel-authored soundtrack to the Millennium Dome Show, the 160-artist extravaganza that underwent 999 performances during the 365 days in 2000 that the Dome was open. Helping to tell the story of three generations of the same family living through three distinct eras – the past, the present, the future – Peter’s soundtrack accordingly drew from deep, long-held tradition and from contemporary grooves. Hurdy-gurdys butted up alongside drum & bass, ancient dancing the same millennium-celebrating dance as modern. It's especially poignant for me because I lost my wife to cancer a few years ago, and I Grieve generally rips my heart out. Her voice does such wonderful things to my ears. Today, through headphones, it feels directly injected into my central nervous system.

In this case it's not a sample, it's a rerecording. This Sound on Sound article mentions the performers. It's also a fascinating read if you're interested in the technicals behind their recording and production processes.

As every time this song comes up on RP, I expect Jacques Brel to start singing, I was about to post a video link to the song the intro is borrowed from, but I see many have already pointed it out.
It's a near copy & paste musical quote... but I see it as an homage AND they trasnform it into a true Goldfrapp song, integrate it in the Goldfrapp sound/ambient... which is just what I expect of someone who takes a musical fragment from someone else.
More than a Goldfrapp fan, I am a 'Felt mountain' album fan and there's nothing by Goldfrapp afterwards that has knocked me off my feet like this one did. I still will occasionally dig a new song. This one is truly haunting and beautiful; it just sounds like things they have already done.
Just in case nobody stated it: the song by Jacques Brel from which the initial piano&double bass theme was taken is "Ces gens-là", which rouhgly translates to 'With those people' or 'With this kind of people'.
It depicts a quite cruel and depressing picture of a family doomed by lack of communication, of love, where hate and loneliness is everywhere - with the narrator (obviously a member of said family) offering a brief glance of hope talking about his love for a luminous, beautiful woman who loves him back, their plans being to have a home "with windows everywhere, almost no walls, pointing out that if it's not for sure to happen, at least it might one day... only to conclude by saying he now has to go "home".
It's dark, like the very majority of Brel's stuff, even when the music is joyful...

I am not a hater of Oasis, really. During their heyday, whenever that was, I was pleasantly ignorant of the group. Now that RP has overexposed me to them, I can grasp the negative response they get from some listeners. I must question the decision to follow the Goldfrapp piece with this. One is subtle and etherial (I could not find a better word, from my perch in the ether); the other has a crude bluntness. One lifts; the other drags.
Ethereal..
She sounds like women who really THINK think as opposed to those possibly who worry and loop and such over superficialities ... ?

Some of us like having music put in front of us that we would never have found/never knew we liked/sometimes hate. For others, it's (like you say) pain. Oldfart48, have you tried Pandora? You'll get the music you indicate you like, plus suggestions on similar styles. Get served what you want.As pleasant as this track is I think 10 plays in the last 30 days is somewhat excessive. That is verging on commercial station playlist rotation. The album has ten tracks. Give some others a spin. Or better still play stuff that I can't hear locally.
