Call this on my awful luck
Skies they opened wide for us
Oh, what a heavy rain it was that covered all of you.
The wind has changed, my boy
I never knew a voice like yours
But i know just what good it was, that lie you hold on to.

But to call those shadows coming after you -
Go on, go on
I couldn't bear to lose -
Go on, go on
I couldn't stand to -
They begged you for your awful words
So let them know the burden of your blues.

It could've been the one you loved
The visions of the things I'd done
Well, I wouldn't be the only one if you'd only told the truth.
While they chased you down that night
I was pulling feathers from your lies
Oh I swear I saw it in your eyes, you never told it true.

But to call those shadows coming after you -
Go on, go on
I couldn't beg you to -
Go on, go on
I couldn' stand to lose -
They begged you for your awful words
So let them know the burden of your blues.

Oh to call those shadows coming after you -
Go on, go on
I couldn't beg you to -
Go on, go on
I couldn' stand to lose -
They begged you for your awful words
So let them know the burden of your blues.

Canadians always sayin they’re sorry
The energy on this song is infectious.  Love when it comes on rotation.

Glad to find Basia here. I only know of her because I spent a few weeks in Montreal during an aimless couple of months in Canada (a sort of 'finding myself' trip that I went on fresh out of uni – yes, I'm aware of how pretentious that sounds, but I was young and intense), and I picked up a free 'best of the unsigned' CD at a fair of some kind. I loved that CD. It was a permanent fixture in my car. Basia's Pilgriming Vine (great song, by the way) was one of the highlights. And her music brings back fond memories of that rather intense time.

If Tracy Chapman + Natalie Merchant were in my church they would heartily  endorse Basia Bulat. What a great song.
Basia has a beautiful voice and this is a lovely song , but I can't help being reminded of Mrs Doyle from Father Ted. "Will ye not have a nice cup of tea? Ah, go on, g'wan, g'wan, g'wan , G'WAN!" :o)

I read on RP that the cover photo was taken near midnight in the far N of Canada. It does have an ethereal and spectral quality.

Have Seen her live in Groningen 2015- so amazing!!!
WOW, thought this was Natalie Merchant!!

Yeah....me neither. Way over-produced too ; ^ /
Love, love, love LOVE this talented young singer! So much power in her voice, great pitch and tremendous control of both.

I get the feeling she has at least two gears that we haven't even heard yet.
Love everything I have heard from this artist

I'm now sure that example is particularly accurate.  To say: "I hate this song and I find it frightfully unacceptable that it get played here." is an example of intolerance.  To say: "I hate this song and it's been played at least eight times in the last fortnight."(without checking the "Plays in last 30 days" read-out") is an example of exaggeration or a hostile form of hyperbole.

Yodelling on RP? Whatever next?
the voice is nice and the band alright.
I'm getting sick of this song!

I was able to catch Basia in concert in Arlington, VA a week or so ago.  She did a fabulous show, playing about half a dozen different instruments and quite friendly with the audience.  It was a small venue, so I was able to talk to her afterwards and have her sign her albums (on vinyl!).  The only disappointment was that she didn't play this song, which at least among RP listeners is her biggest hit.  We talked a little about Radio Paradise and she was aware and very happy about how much Bill and Rebecca are playing her music.

Wonderful post...
Lov. Her voice !! AndCanadian !!!! Very proud .. I live this station .. It's good for my mental health !!!

For those on the fence or downright haters, here's a clip that might win you: Basia Bulat Tiny Desk Concert.
Sounds like Cher to me...not good.
I really like this tune, optimistic and nice voice
liked it but now i'm sick of hearing it
Tolerable on its own, but not at the current play frequency --- better if it were heard less often (maybe every year the cicadas come out?)

..i like it too. easy 8

...there was a time, randomly we'll say -before Dylan, when the airwaves (except for jazz) were congested with the dry-heave inducing sound of the so called perfect voice. They were melodious voices, lovely and comfortable to rest your head on. But did they reflect life?  Or, more likely, were they an Ozzie and Harriet dream for what could be if not for the silly peccadilloes of being human?

Ozzie and Harriet was a lie most people hoped could be true. Johnny Mathis, Doris Day, Dean Martin.. perfect voices. Were they accurate in expressing reality at the time? Answer to that depends on your world view.

So the peanut gallery here, pining for them good ol’ days huh? Sheltered in your cozy home, 2.3 kids and a two car garage..  ‘rather see a perfect world than get a little taste of the wild? If that’s it, no problem. Of course. It’s your life. Let’s just call it what it is though – it’s sheltered, insulated living, under a cultural rock called Main St. ...not a particularly sensitive view of the world outside that rock.

I’ve been told I can be a little abrasive so I’m adding this if it makes anyone feel better   ..hugs and kisses ;) .

I like this{#Nyah}
Sometimes I think BillG puts stuff like this in just to elicit edgy comments! :-)
(BTW, I rather like this, despite having some of the exact same negative thoughts as many of the posters below; Basia's grown on me, or I should say her delivery has.)

I just think her back up musicians are out of whack with song itself — that drumming!   Is it the RCMP marching band?

That's not how you pronounce "Basia", Bill! ;))
An easy 7.  And I'm already toying with the idea of making it an 8....  Maybe next time (music tends to grow on me as I absorb and process more of the detail.)
Needs more cowbell to bring out the percussion.
Love it!

Stop it.
Dolly Parton singing under an alias. Gawd the warbling. It's makes me want to smash up the furniture.
Cough that damn marble out! C'mon I know you can do it. Maybe by the end of this tune she'll get a slap on the back. Don't get me wrong, I like the tune and her voice a bit less, but it's unique. Maybe she should keep the marble for it does give her some "identity" otherwise she might sound like the 18,000 other female singers out there.
Heroic! {#War}

This morning on my bike (bicycle that is) riding to work, in a beautiful Dutch autumn setting with all the yellow, red and brown leafs all around, this album really hit the spot...

Just cannot enjoy this song - it is a combo between her voice and the lyrics - too much youoooooo / uooooooo
I was most unfortunate to be ;listening when this came on...and Gillian Welch follows....make it stop!!
Spock played it better.

Spock's autoharp

eek that quivering voice is like nails on a chalkboard

I remember hearing a live version of this on the CBC on my way home one day.   I would say that the drums were even louder in the live version.

This may sound odd, but this is a great track for a work-out mix. It's shuffled up a few times on my playlist and before I know why, I just found I was accelerating...
I know what I like, and I don't need to address all the other comments.
I'm really impressed lately by Basia, at first i didn't really notice it but the last couple of times she came by here on RP it struck me, excellent sound!

Plus, she sort of has the Michelle Williams look going for her and in my book that's a good thing... {#Hearteyes} {#Wink}
Nice 180 from A Perfect Circle...

Like it.

This title has something of a Celitc "feel" to it.
I have mixed feelings about her voice. My daughter gave me her cd, and in some cases her voice is just too trilly.
Yeah!!!
Mute.
Stingray: Ze Germans you said? Ok, let me teach you something more: in 1945 one German ss-mann said: shoot everyone in that village. That was the village of my grandmother. She survived with my 2-years old mother, because Wehrmacht Lieutenant stopped this order.

Never try to say to me this way. I can speak german, but I never liked this country, especially Baden-Wuertenberg.

Nice song, great singer, evocative voice - I must get this CD. Good cover photo, too, which a comment on another of the album songs says was taken at midnight in Northern Canada.
I tried to listen to this album, which was given to me, but the trill in her voice is kind of annoying to me.

I don't care from where she hails. She's got a freakin' strong voice - confident, with a hint of Tracy Chapman in the delivery.  Yep, I like this one.  Bumping it up. {#Dancingbanana_2}

Jesus, what power!  Like this song, but I'll need another listen, when I'm not so overwhelmed with other stuff...
I like her singing more and more.
I don't know Shakira's music, but whoever set up that shot is a genius! {#Arrowd}{#Hearteyes}

Just followed by Rheostatics.  The starts of a Canadian set, Bill?  Thanks!
I'm reminded of Dar Williams. Good, I like them both.

I usually like her voice, but this percussion-happy arrangement is too busy and clashes with the song. It seems to be a sad love song, but it's got the instrumental tracks from an Irish rebel ballad by Flogging Molly.

Put her in the room with Eddy Vedder, Buffy St. Marie and the lady from The Be Good Tanyas. They can all sing for each other and tell each other how great they are: "Oh, you have such a nice vibrato." "Why thank you, so do you."

Good song. She's got a great voice. she's got two other tracks that i've heard that are terrific.

Everyone should check out "In the Night" and "Snakes And Ladders"
