Saw myself in a leisure suit
Pretty white trash
Floating on the surface of life
Always comes to this
That emptiness
No matter how many toys you've got
Its not enough
Not ever enough
To take away the aching in your heart
For Human kindness
No one's sleeping
In a deafening silence
There's no address
No number listed
For the one that took the shot
Ready or not
His riteous and twisted crusade
Is over now
We need someone else
To take away the aching in our hearts
For human kindness
No one's sleeping
In a deafening silence
And there's a time for it
For human kind, for human kind
Alright, alright
I want to cry so hard
Want to break down
Feels so good
I wanna fly all night
Make you laugh
Make you feel good
No matter how many toys you've got
Its not enough
Not ever enough
To take away the anguish in our hearts
For human kindness
Is anyone asleep tonight?
In a deafening silence
We'll take it away from us
If you don't make time
For human kind
I wanna ride all night
Make you laugh
Make you feel so good
I want to cry so hard
Want to break down
Make you feel good
Alright, alright...

This song is wonderful in spite of the watery sound effect. (Triggering all kinds of old tape deck maintenance fears.)
New album by Crowded House out this week, pretty good !
wonderful guy - his NZ soundguy is a buddy of mine
I love how even his most obscure tracks are infused with an inimitable next-level lyrical genius and such gleeful playfulness on guitar!
Great addition to Fleetwood Mac when I saw them last year.
I love a lot of Neil Finn's music - this one doesn't quite hit the spot for me though. A creditable 6.
Love me some Finn...any kind, anywhere...Split Enz was such a massive launch of an ever- enlarging talent.
First time hearing this Awesome.
Love this tune. Thank you Bill and Rebecca.
funny how human unkindness criticizes those who dare soar on their behalf
FINN, THE OTHER BEATLE!!
...and a nice guy, too.

Look what you mean bears have done: Goldilocks is having a decade-long meltdown.
Unable to find just the right amount of Neil Finn for the bears, Goldilocks turned to the cold comfort of self-medication.
It sure would be great if you two could take your "discussion" back into the woods.

Does this make the Finn Bros. New Zealand's answer to Lennon and McCartney?

This is a fantastic album. Because it's a solo outing it has some creative flourishes, but don't think for a second that the songwriting represents Crowded House castaways. I think some of Neil's best songs are in this collection.
The chords, melody and progression of this driving song are spectacular to my ears!!
Wow, what a 'creative' use of a beaten to death oxymoron - deafening silence, anyone?
Great tune by this under rated artist!
Oh yeah! Bring it on!!! Love this tune...!!! 'Nuff said!
Such an underrated musician. I was lucky enough to see Crowded House during their first reunion tour.
8 to a 9...

Very excited about seeing Mr. Finn with Crowded House this month!

I concur. Although I almost like this despite the lyrics.

That's common in North America, too.

Human Kindness isn't on One Nil. As well as track order, the tracks themselves are a little different:
One All - Human Kindness, Lullaby Requiem
One Nil - Don't Ask Why, Elastic Heart

In England (and presumably New Zealand, where Neil is from), "nil" is another way of saying "zero," particularly when reciting sports scores. So "One Nil" is a perfectly acceptable expression from someone from the Commonwealth.

Hmmmm ... not quite up there with his better stuff for me.
Ah, my dream man sings again. He sings to my soul -
This song makes everything good, this morning. Wipe away that stress; get down to the core. Thank you, Neil Finn -
ABSOLUTELY CORRECT! Music can't be better. Neil is a musical mastermind (and very nice guy), leave alone this song's far from being among his best material!
Are those white spots from the mirror ball twirling over his head?

. . . and then The Human League.
The sound in the beginning and in the background of a large part of the song, sounds exactly like music distorted with my old tape recorder, by manipulating the pause/ffwd keys to make it run faster or slower during recording or playback... :o

I'm glad someone else said that.
Like Neil, and to a lesser extent, Tim. The high water mark was Neil's work with Crowded House. A handful-o-classics IMHO.
Agree that TWT is a good return to form for Neil.

Bada-Boom!
But seriously folks, he and his brother just put out another album, although I forget the name of it, but they bill themselves as "The Finn Brothers." Played here in Austin a month or so ago and put on a great, down to earth show.
Neil Finn is highly underappreciated, IMHO. "Try Whistling This" is one of the best CDs I've bought over the last decade.

I like the Crowded House songs more, luckily the new Finn Brothers cd is also terrific...

Great stuff. Both versions of this CD are worth owning. Firstly, there was 'One Nil', which eventually begat the US release of 'One Nil'. There are some different mixes and songs. Neil's great live, too.

There will never be too much Finn! As long as it's a good mix between Crowded House and the two independently, that is. At the very least, they could be heavy in the mix and make it a beautiful thing. Lyrics, Licks, lovely arrangements and vocals - it's just plain brilliant pop! Wheeeeeee!
Lets get some Split Enz going.

It's way better than pop—it's actually great! Okay, I am biased. I think most pop songs suck, but then I am not one to follow the "norm" with regard to anything.
great songwriter(s)
A fine song from one of the best albums I've heard in the last 3 years.
One of Finn's weaker offerings, IMHO. And at that, it's still a pretty damn good song-certainly better than 90% of the crap I hear on the radio.

Perhaps you know him through Split Enz or Crowed House. One way or another he's been around since probably the 70's.
RP has often "put the pieces" together for me highlighting solo careers and connecting them to bands. I enjoy finding the connections that RP weaves through the playlists.

In case you missed previous posting or did not check out the AMG entry. He went solo after many years with his brother as leader of Crowded House.
