An unexpected period can disrupt a student’s day and distract her if she does not have access to a pad or tampon, Boylan said. “If you’re disgusted with our bloody pants, then maybe you should rethink whether or not this is important for everybody or if everybody would use it,” she said. “I think you all collectively benefit from me not bleeding in your seat.” Sophia Ahmed, 20, and a UF material science and engineering sophomore, started planning the protest after a Student Government Senate committee voted against a code revision to fund an initiative that would provide menstrual products on campus on Jan. 15. Although organizers did not expect everyone to paint their pants, they hoped the visual inspires students to advocate for accessible menstrual products. Shannon Mathew, a UF psychology and sociology senior, was one of the first students to paint their pants at the protest. The 21-year-old said she’s had no access to a tampon in an emergency too many times to count. “This is a part of reproductive justice,” Mathew said. “I’m not ashamed of my period, and I don’t think anyone should be.” wtf? is it that hard to carry a tampon in your handbag or pocket?

not trying to stress an opinion; simply saw this article and thought it fit: Do Female Execs Lack Vision?By Jessica Stillman February 19th, 2009 @ 4:15 am 74 Comments | ![1204637477_4c0f68914c_m](http://i.bnet.com/blogs/1204637477_4c0f68914c_m.jpg) The Find: Whether it's reality or just a persistent bias, perceptions that female executives lack vision may be keeping some women from reaching the C-suite. - The Source: Research by INSEAD professor Herminia Ibarra discussed on INSEAD Knowledge.
The Takeaway: Studies show that in almost all measures of executive performance women are equal to or outperform men, with one exception: vision. Ibarra's review of the 360 degree reviews of nearly 3,000 women revealed that, in general, they were seen as less visionary. What could explain this? Ibarra offers three possibilities: - Women may have a vision but they may be using a different process to develop their long-term strategy. Women may work with teams and collaborate to find direction and peers and managers may not value that collaborative process as much as they value someone who appears to come up with a vision independently.
- Women may have a vision but may be hesitant to make audacious statements because they don't have the analysis to back them up or because they are more frequently challenged in business settings.
- Women may not value visionary pronouncements. Some women are skeptical of visionary claims and may view them as little more than a sales job. Many women interviewed for the study said they believed that getting things done is what should matter in business.
Whatever the reason for this perceived lack of vision, Ibarra suggests that those women wanting to climb the career ladder not simply wait around for visionary inspiration. She tells ambitious ladies, to get out and not think about how to set strategy in the safety of their own office, but how to start networking in a way that gives them a broader vision of the future... The way you envision the future is by being out there and trying to understand trends in the industry, in society and talking to people.
The Question: Have you run into this perception of female execs? UPDATE: Read our favorite comments from BNET readers in response to this post and additional research on women and vision found by BNET blogger Joanna Higgins.

On this, we disagree. I'm not ready to allege the superiority of either gender - we're neither better nor worse, just different. And if two people are doing the same work at the same level of performance, they should be paid equally.

Alchemist wrote: I completely agree that pay should be based solely on merit. I am not suggesting that a woman should receive less pay than a man for identical performance in an identical job. And I understand how such discrimination would make one boiling mad.
I don't think that invalidates any of my points, though. I think passing a law like this would not only fail to solve the problem, it would cause new ones.
I am curious to see how it will pan out, if it even passes today. It would be nice, if there was recourse when one finds out that they are being paid less. The bill is named for a gal who worked in the auto industry and found out she was being paid less. Her claim for fair pay was rejected because she hadn't filed her claim within 180 days of her hiring. She didn't figure it out until years later and basically got told, too bad for you. Hopefully, it will act as a deterent to employers who would stoop to the level to pay women less. At the very least, we can hope that people like Lilly Ledbetter get a chance at receiving their back pay. If it can accomplish those goals, it will be a success. Now let's see what the government can do to mess it up.
