LordBaltimore wrote:* Cat People (1982) Lush, stylish, and fully leverages its New Orleans setting to great effect. Plot a bit thin but great acting performances by Malcolm McDowell, the lead actress, and John Heard (nice to see him in a starring role for a change).
* The Howling The "style" and fashion of the film shows its age. However the creature effects were pretty cool and once the story got cooking midway through it had a pretty interesting plot. Great ending too, clever way to wrap things up, and I always enjoy a flick that breaks the fourth wall with a witty one-liner to send the audience home.
Not to give away my age too much, but I saw the two movies mentioned above, in theaters, when I was in college. The lead actress in the former was Nastassja Kinski - quite a sensation in the early 1980's and the film had a theme song by David Bowie. I liked The Howling, too - it had Patrick MacNee, who was on The Avengers TV show, and a very pretty Dee Wallace, who later played the mother in E.T. They were both fun movies. I liked Serpent & The Rainbow too. I know of the other 2 films but have not seen them. I, too, used to watch a lot of movies with my wife while she was pregnant.

Wife's pregnant, been spending some extra time with her watchin some flicks.
* Shallow Grave Pretty darn good, and made with lots of panache by Danny Boyle. Ewan MacGregor displays his future greatness and there's plenty of intrigue and "holy crap" moments. Ending was a bit silly in some respects though, (SPOILER ALERT), because I'd imagine he's going to spend the rest of his life in jail unless he comes up with a pretty convincing explanation for everything so hiding all that money would be cold comfort.
* Near Dark Awesome vampire flick by Kathryn Bigelow. I am consistently impressed by Bigelow everytime I see one of her films. Sort of a vampire version of Point Break, but set in the midwest which was refreshing for a vamp flick. Bill Paxton nearly steals the show and is downright nasty in his role.
* Cat People (1982) Lush, stylish, and fully leverages its New Orleans setting to great effect.
* The Serpent and the Rainbow Very impressive effort by Wes Craven, more of a docu-drama than a horror flick in many ways. It was a bold move for Craven to set a movie almost entirely in Haiti and I think it was a gamble that paid off in spades. Before I watched the film I assumed that Craven would crudely exploit the Haitian culture for cheap scares, but nothing could have been further from the truth. Even if it's not quite accurate, the movie was very respectful and sympathetic toward the Haitian people (at least the non-corrupt ones, anyway). Great on-location scenery too. Plus the villain almost stole the show, whoever that actor was he did a great job!
