That is somewhat condescending Hippiechick -  It is as though you would be saying you own the truth, and all the others are not open minded enough to see said truth. In this particular case, you are in the realm of interpretation and personal values, there is no fact, just perceptions and experiences. Tolle and Buddhism do not own the truth either, they are just another version of someone else's truth.

Actually, it was.  Humans are social animals.  Our society is not built on individual survival, it is built on cooperative living.  We build the communities we live in together.  We form social groups and associations that are constantly in flux.  Implied and explicit promises are part of the glue that holds society together.  When you join a team, when you get assigned to a team in class, when you get assigned to a project team at work, you are expected to fulfill an implied promise or commitment to do your share and try your best.  Same as when you have a child; you undertake an implied commitment to support and raise the child you have borne because they are helpless and cannot care for themselves.

Your daughter may learn on her own the value of keeping promises; if she gets repeatedly disappointed when other people don't keep promises they made to her, she may develop the perspective to realize that when she does this to others, she is bound to disappoint them, just as she was disappointed.

When we teach our children that commitments, both implied and explicit, are unimportant, we are not preparing them for life in our community.  Maybe there are buddhist communities that don't depend on people keeping their promises, but in our society, that is part of the glue that holds things together.  Look at your own post below.  Someone made promises to you, and when they didn't keep them, you got upset, didn't you?

I agree that commitments are very important but sometimes I do think they do not need to be taught, the child or teen, in principle, should feel the consequences of his or her choice. Letting down your team normally has consequences. When my youngest son played soccer and hockey he never missed a game ever in 14 years. I did not forced this on him. he forced it on himself it was innate to him to honour his commitments and that at a very young age. When my eldest son played hockey and soccer he always managed to miss one game out of three, and when he got kicked out of the team, he was not too happy about it, but those were the consequences of his choice, as I explained to him. In both cases, I never forced the decision on them, I did comment, but I never force the decision.

And, in the same spirit, I would challenge you to open your mind to the possiblity that, in some instances, your beliefs and those of Tolle and those of Buddihism may be wrong.
