The Last of Us

I'd read about the video game's unusually bleak/consequential game play. Sounded like a good premise for yet another post-apocalyptic/dystopian TV series.

Saw episodes 1 & 2. So far, so good.

Charlie started watching The Last of Us because it's got Pedro Pascal (he knows him from the Star Wars series' Mandalorian) and among the cameos listed was Nick Offerman. No spoilers except to say it's a zombie series based on a video game.

As much as I don't enjoy the ugh factor or the BOO! factor, the series is very compelling and Holy Shit episode 3 ... even if you don't want to watch the first two episodes, you don't really have to to get into ep. 3 and there's minimal zombie, maximal story. You might even cry. Some of my friends online last night were in fact crying.

I need to get back to that one. It's such a rare thing to see Native humor portrayed (and correctly so).

Those of you familiar with the extraordinary, brilliant show The Detectorists might want to check your streaming services for the recent Christmas special. Mackenzie Crook thought about this one for a long time, and it pays off nicely. Do not read anything about it that might tell you anything about the plot. Let it unfold and you'll be rewarded.

The original series (has three seasons before it wraps up poignantly, smartly)

The recent special

I loved every episode and was really chuffed to find Detectorists The Movie which I had somehow missed. Excellent show. I think Toby Jones is brilliant.
He also does a lot of producing and directing - some pretty big name films. His little BBC series about the bus driver was another gem of his.

Another subtle comedy but with different actors, The Cleaner from BBC was another British short series that I wish they had continued.
Acorn and Britbox are our regular go to channels these days. A pleasant break from the American formula for TV.

Cool, thanks.  I think the original series is on Amazon (or maybe just Season 1 is) but I didn't see the special listed there.

I never get the remote unless it's baseball season, but for some reason a few days ago I was surfing around the Apple TV and started this show. I definitely don't binge watch anything but I am done with Season 1 including the last four episodes last night. I really can't understand why no one wants to watch it with me because the cast is strong, it's not ultra-violent (some needless gore though, that makes Justine clock out), and the premise is pretty cool. The only time the show clunks is when they try to work the phrase, "Slow Horses," into the dialog. Which isn't often, so hey.

When the second season came out I was happy/bummed because I am NOT one to wait patiently for weekly
episodes.
I also always watch Acorn and Britbox for the british (and scottish and welsh and northern irish and irish)
detective series. Many made from books and also based on true events. You see the same cast of characters
over and over in various roles, recycling from show to show. It's very different than the plastic, formulaic
american shows. Although Echo 3 was quite good for a yank production. (Subtitles on is a must when
watching britbox and acorn, though. ) Looking forward to Pale Blue Eye because of the plot and cast. Anything
with Toby Jones is generally really good/funny.
