But I would also add that I became a much more sophisticated traveller of Canada after spending 5 years hitch-hiking and backpacking through Latin America and Africa.

I learned how to respect native/aboriginal peoples during that long trek.  Picking up a couple of languages helped.  

More important I learned how to see the world through the eyes of those under American, Israeli and other boot heels.

You can cross a border on a train ride and be home by supper. For most 'mericans it's a lot more effort than that. For what it's worth I agree with the sentiment, but there are good reasons (besides the notoriously provincial nature of us colonists) for us to visit our own cultures first.

UT employees get to ride free, anytime, any line.  We have one vehicle, so on dionysius' days off, I take the bus in the morning and three days a week in the afternoon (unless he has to work late and can stick around a bit to wait for me).  A couple of years ago, a former supervisor of mine had retired to finish her BA.  I suggested the bus, since 1) student parking is horrifying on campus, 2) there was a busline close to her house, and 3) she was only coming to campus two days a week.
