Whatever else, he was supremely intelligent & combative polemicist.

Oh yes & some of his quotes were pretty cool:

"The four most over-rated things in life are champagne, lobster, anal sex and picnics."

"(George W Bush) is lucky to be governor of Texas. He is unusually incurious, abnormally unintelligent, amazingly inarticulate, fantastically uncultured, extraordinarily uneducated, and apparently quite proud of all these things."

"Prince Charles, subjected to a regime of fierce paternal harangues and penitential cold-shower boarding schools, withdrew into himself, was eventually talked into a calamitous marriage with someone he didn't love or respect, and is now the morose, balding, New Age crank and licensed busybody that we flinch from today."

"Owners of dogs will have noticed that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they will think you are God. Whereas owners of cats are compelled to realise that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they draw the conclusion that they are gods."

Especially since it's in black & white. As is befitting a man of his stature.

He really overplayed it, why do you think we sent over to you! He actually sounded nothing like most modern English men, but like some sort of anachronistic throw back.

If it's any consolation he brought the American estimation of old-school British intellectuals up a couple of notches.

Eh. He had the arrogance of the very, very talented. He had one of the quickest wits I've ever seen and a very sharp mind. He was well-read, well-traveled, and he seemed to remember all of it even when completely besotted, which was pretty often. He was a rare beast nowadays: an honest intellectual.

He was willing to tangle with anybody, and damn the consequences. He was even willing to face the scariest thing there is for someone in his position: he was willing to change his mind.
