look. you do whatever you do because you want to. sports are the same. play to win sure. but spending your time following team sport, as a sport, is simply boring.

way more fun just to do it yourself.

*** spoiler alert ***

They killed Grama!  Darn it, I was hoping for a few great sex scenes with her in them!  HBO sucks!

I agree. You'd think the show would send the writers and actors to LA to pick up the subtleties of the accents. My friends who live there sometimes sound like they are from New York when they say some words. I often have to look at them to see if they are making a joke about something when I hear what is a real unique region of the South.
Aren't the writers and actors already from LA? I mean, Hollywood is where it is all based.
(ok, so I am being tongue in cheek... forgive me)

I can tell you some of the series was filmed here in Louisiana.  Obviously, they didn't study the accent when they were here.

NO black woman in the south would talk like the character does (sorry, the character's name escapes me)....at least none that I've ever heard.

Predictability is always a problem when you base a TV series (or movie) on a best-selling book. Personally, I think the adaptation is actually better than the source material. But if you've read the book(s) then you have a good idea of where the story is heading. That said, the TV series has additional storylines and IMO more depth - both plot and character. So far each episode has contained something that I wasn't expecting and enjoyed.

I do find some of the moralizing a little heavy-handed. That part of the story is a little too predictable for me. But as far as the other plot twists and turns - while they won't shock you I think they aren't being telegraphed too heavily either. Of course, I don't actually know what is going to happen. For all I know they throw out the book after the fifth episode and Grandma is the killer.

I haven't read the books or talked to anyone about them.  I'm glad to hear from someone who knows about the author who likes the series so far.  I hate getting into a series to only find out later that it didn't work out as expected and the executive producer pooch kicked it.

I was beginning to wonder if the series was the result of a bunch of HBO exec's wanting to produce another show about gay rights.  It does seem a little overt.

"Mostly I just like the idea: What do you do? What would you do? Now, of all times, I'm excited about watching the story of people who are present for a cultural change of sweeping intensity. Terrifying — the apocalypse always is — potentially gratifying, certainly edifying. This is a story about the moment everything changes. Now's the time."

Most southern accents are just so exaggerated in movies & TV shows, in my opinion. I'm sure the accent would be more pronounced in a smaller town than it would be in Greenville (where I live), which has around 100K people, but it was so pronounced on the show, it was a distraction for me.
