Try to find a Technics 1200mk2 in good condition, they last forever, a workhorse machine & you can find spare parts easily .
ColdMiser wrote:I dug my old turntable out of mothballs after 20 years or so and of course it doesn't work so i'm in the market for a new unit. I'm not an audiophile but I'm sure some of you on RP are. What is a good model to get for under $200?

I have a low end Audio Technics that has served me well for a few years as I rediscovered my collection and started adding on. I'm just looking for a sound upgrade without breaking the bank, this looks like it might fit the bill.
Its ok. Do note that it has no pitch or speed control and the manual says it has a 2% rotation variance, which is a lot. You can hear that. And it has a chachky power supply. I'm a direct drive fan myself. I would still recommend looking for a good used SL 1200. They are the standard for speed or rotation control. They're built like the brick shit house and very easily serviced. It would be the last turntable you'll ever buy. 2¢ ...

ColdMiser wrote:thanks for the suggestions. I'll be sure to look into both. May have to flip a coin if you do go used, it often may not be a simple plug & play process. Is the needle damaged? Are the belts failing? Is the tracking, tonearm set properly? when was the last time it was lubricated? Plan on spending at least another $100 to take it into a shop to be serviced.

Plenty of good stuff going the used route. For a new deck, I've heard good things about Rega Rega RP1: $445 $$$ â
The plug'n'play RP1 (for Rega Planar One) replaces Rega's popular P1. Nearly identical to the earlier model in size and shape, the RP1 uses an Ortofon OM5e moving-magnet cartridge, but trades the P1's MDF platter for one of phenolic resin and adds Rega's new, solidly built RB101 tonearm. Additionally, the P1's drab gray finish is exchanged for the RP1's choice of White, Cool Gray, or Titanium. Compared to the P1, the RP1 delivered more drive, better focus, and was the more confident, purposeful, and authoritative player. "Rega's RP1 looks good, is easy to set up, and plays records like it means it," said SM. AD shared SM's enthusiasm: "It's not just that I can't imagine $445 buying more happiness; I can't imagine so modest an investment in money and effort buying more music." The RP1 Performance Pack Upgrade was easy to install and resulted in a bigger soundstage, deeper silences, and greater resolution of low-level detail, said SM. "A no-brainer," agreed AD. Went through this a year and a half ago. I would strongly recommend getting a Technics SL 1200. They are going to be a bit more than the $400 you are willing to pay, but with all the others out there new in this price range, its going to be the best in the long run. They hold their value as well. Here's a link that has some available in NYC. You might be able to negotiate and pick up saving shipping, etc. I got mine from this site. It was from a seller in Japan. Ideally you don't want one that was used for DJ'ing ... There's also fleabay ... ;)
