Try to find a Technics 1200mk2 in good condition, they last forever, a workhorse machine & you can find spare parts easily .

Its ok.  Do note that it has no pitch or speed control and the manual says it has a 2% rotation variance, which is a lot.  You can hear that.  And it has a chachky power supply.  

I'm a direct drive fan myself.  I would still recommend looking for a good used SL 1200.  They are the standard for speed or rotation control.

They're built like the brick shit house and very easily serviced.  It would be the last turntable you'll ever buy.

I will probably get a turntable soon, right now I'm shopping and this TN-100 caught my eye, for 279 bucks less than the 400S,
maybe more up (or down) to my speed, I'll probably not play it much since I have only one vinyl to play but of course that'll change

Seemed to get good reviews. The bad ones seem to be from high end audiophile folks which I'm not one (till I win the lottery anyway). I have a low end Audio Technics that has served me well for a few years as I rediscovered my collection and started adding on. I'm just looking for a sound upgrade without breaking the bank, this looks like it might fit the bill.

if you do go used, it often may not be a simple plug & play process.  Is the needle damaged?  Are the belts failing? Is the tracking, tonearm set properly? when was the last time it was lubricated? Plan on spending at least another $100 to take it into a shop to be serviced.

Plenty of good stuff going the used route.  For a new deck, I've heard good things about Rega

Went through this a year and a half ago.  I would strongly recommend getting a Technics SL 1200.  They are going to be a bit more than the $400 you are willing to pay, but with all the others out there new in this price range, its going to be the best in the long run.  They hold their value as well.

Here's a link that has some available in NYC.  You might be able to negotiate and pick up saving shipping, etc.  I got mine from this site.  It was from a seller in Japan.  Ideally you don't want one that was used for DJ'ing ...

There's also fleabay ...  ;)

I saw one at the Cooper Hewitt Museum in NYC last summer. Would love to play some of my favorite vinyl on that sucker.
