Fall prey to the blizzard head
Wrapped my hand around the glass again
We all thought that I might change as I got older
Fell down and nothing bled
Wrapped in cotton alcohol again
To the hill I hear from the prick upon my shoulder
Free pour the fruitless thoughts
It's far too late to talk so much but
Still not giving up the wish that I was sober
Forgive me I can't speak straight
Forgive me I can't
Forgive me it's far too late
Choke down the gateway drug
Opened the gates, in came the flood, it comes
Like a blush of love, it hits me without warning
Long nights of getting lost
I walk beneath the bridge I don't know
I need black suit for tomorrow, I'm in mourning
My love you should know
The best of me left hours ago so
Shove a rag into my mouth and let me smolder
Fallout and the damage done
I can't un-sing the things I've sung
Still not giving up though
I wish that i was sober
Forgive me I can't speak straight
Forgive me I can't
Forgive me it's far too late
Oh come and shake me till I'm dry
Oh I wish that I was sober
Oh come to me and kill the night off
I wish that I was sober
Oh come and shake me till I'm dry
Oh I wish that I was sober
Oh come to me and kill the night off
I wish that I was sober

We all fantasize about a life so harmonious that that in itself is intoxicating. Peace, brother.
Pretty heartbreaking considering the fate of the singer. A riveting song.
Excellent!

Having a woman in my life who struggles with alcohol I understand this song well.

This band was amazing. One of the gems RP introduced me to. Their second album, The Midnight Organ Fight, is absolutely a top 10 album for me.
A new band for me, started as a preliminary 6 but the moment the guitars kicked in it instantly went to a 7. A pretty good start.

The pedant in me wants to point out that the title should use the past subjunctive to indicate the optative mood ("it should be I Wish I Were Sober!"), but then I would have to point out the same about other well known songs:
"If I were to say to you/Girl, we could not get much higher"
"I wish I were a little bit taller/I wish I were a baller"
[first comment to compare The Doors to Royce da 5'9"?]

Stop at opening strains, pause, wipe away a tear, move on....

I dunno, makes sense to me.
Honest enough tune, a 7, but may take away a point for their terrible name.

This one after "Mercy of the Fallen?" Are you trying to break me this morning, Bill?

Silly Rabbit, being sober wouldn't make this much better, though if it helps we wish you were sober too.
Rest in peace Scott. I still miss your music very much.
way to much Talking Heads, it's getting very old Bill :)
While I understand very well the difficulties many have around alcohol, thankfully I have never had to deal with it.
But over the last few years, I have come to realise just how completely useless alcohol is to me and I have as good as stopped drinking it. . . apart from a rare glass of wine or a beer in the sun. . . both of which mostly then give me a headache as my body is now unused to the alcohol in my system and remind me why I stopped!
Once I truly and objectively looked at all that surrounded it, I could see just how conditioned I was to be drinking it as opposed to actually wanting or ending it in my life. It was a complete revelation to be free of it and just live my life completely as myself.

I am so going to miss future work from these guys. I can only hope the remaining members re-form and give us their new efforts.
This song always makes me happy and sad at the same time.
So long Scott Hutchison, you and your beautiful music will be missed.

Hilarious.
I wish I was drunk.
