That I might be a part of this,
Ripple on water from a lonesome drip,
A fallen tree that witnessed me,
Him alone, him and me.

And that life itself could not aspire,
To have someone be so admired,
I threw creation to my kin,
With a silence broken by a whispered wind.

All of this can be broken,
All of this can be broken,
Hold your devil by his spoke and spin him to the ground.

Root to root and tip to tip,
I look at him my country drip,
Leathered up by all his fears,
But someone brought you close to tears.

Many trains and many miles,
Brought you to me on this sunny isle
And what of which you wish to speak,
Have you come here to rescue me?

All of this can be broken,
All of this can be broken,
Hold your devil by his spoke and spin him to the ground.

But the love of your life lives, but lies no more
Than where she lay your f lowers grows,
The arms that fed and the babes that wed,
The backs that bled keeping her in tow,

But I am your keeper,
And I hold your face away from light,
I am yours 'till they come,
I am yours 'till they come.

Eye to eye, nose to nose,
Ripping off each others clothes in a most peculiar way.
Eye to eye, nose to nose,
Ripping off each others clothes in a most peculiar way.

No thanks; you go ahead.
Enjoy hearing her on RP.  Very talented artist imo.  Would love to hear songs off Once I Was an Eagle as well.
Where exactly is the Devil's spoke located?  Asking for a friend...

I'm glad you wrote that, I thought I was the only one that thought I heard that.
We saw Laura Marling at Birmingham Symphony Hall (UK Birmingham) - what a joy and privilege.
I can but not speak much, also dont like to do devil or devil's spoke... :D

It's a pretty traditional style of British folk music, which precedes Mr. Zimmerman by several hundred years.

I agree Miss/Ms/Mrs/Mr 679.

I saw a real life whirling Dervish show on a cruise down the Nile once.  If you have never seen one, it is a must see...

The song wants to break out into a jig. My feet want to stomp the floor.

My exact feelings when I first heard it. You're dead right. She's got a good voice, though.

Love it, BTW.

Nice catch! Hadn't occurred to me before.

Isn't this a family friendly channel?

At least "spoke" is euphemistic. There are mountains in the Scottish Highlands named "Bod an Diabhail" or "Bod an Diamhain", or literally "the devil's penis", and plenty of other 'penis' peak names - see this blog entry for some examples. The Victorians translated the Gaelic as 'point' to save the blushes of the sensitive.

It starts spooky with an ominous sense of "something" about to happen that is epic or unique . . . then fades to the generic . . . it gets a 9 on the intro and fades to Ho-Hum as it progresses.

Yaa that about sums it up.

Song, Album, Artist - Brilliant
Nina Nastasia. Though I don't know that she's any better known.

Yet another young, quirky-yet-personable folkish singer/songwriter with an in-your-face mix. Purchase the track? album? Or just enjoy when this track comes around on RP?

I agree.  Well put.
I really kind of liked it.
Why is there a picture of Feist on the album cover?

Please.... make this noise stop.......
WOW! and stop demeaning this woman by comparing her with somebody else.  She's in a class by herself.  a 10 on fire.
This is much much like "It's Alright Ma, (I'm Only Bleeding) Bob Dylan. That's okay.
quite sonic

Agreed - it does sound a bit like Turin Brakes.  Also agree about Tori Amos and Natalie Merchant.  I like this song - very intelligent, compelling and well-crafted. {#Yes}
What do you think of this song? "it's cool" says the nine year old in the room
Seriously getting over played ..
7 For the Devils Poke
This song never fails to get my feet tapping and dander up!

what an annoying song (to my ear); I will listen for another, different cut from her.
Wow! And only 20 years old. From her website, it looks like she is dating the, " Mumford & Sons," guy.
Like!

her voice is phenomenal.
Loved the song she did with The Mystery Jets :-)
This really is an amazing track. However, I second the person who commented this was the only song they liked from the album. I have Rhapsody and can listen to albums without buying them, would have been disappointed had I shelled out for the entire disk. Only other song I liked by her was Night Terror, from her first album, Alas I Cannot Swim (good title).
