Long afloat on shipless oceans
I did all my best to smile
Til your singing eyes and fingers
Drew me closer to your isle
And you sang
Sail to me
Sail to me
Let me unfold you
Here I am
Here I am
Waiting to hold you
Did I dream you dreamed about me
Were you hare when I was fox
Now my foolish boat is leaning
Broken lovelorn on your rocks
For you sing
Touch me not
Touch me not
Come back tomorrow
O my heart
O my heart shies from the sorrow
I'm as puzzled as the newborn child
I'm as troubled as the tide
Should I stand amid the breakers
Or should I lie with death my bride
Hear me sing
Swim to me
Swim to me
Let me unfold you
Here I am
Here I am
Waiting to hold you
I did all my best to smile
Til your singing eyes and fingers
Drew me closer to your isle
And you sang
Sail to me
Sail to me
Let me unfold you
Here I am
Here I am
Waiting to hold you
Did I dream you dreamed about me
Were you hare when I was fox
Now my foolish boat is leaning
Broken lovelorn on your rocks
For you sing
Touch me not
Touch me not
Come back tomorrow
O my heart
O my heart shies from the sorrow
I'm as puzzled as the newborn child
I'm as troubled as the tide
Should I stand amid the breakers
Or should I lie with death my bride
Hear me sing
Swim to me
Swim to me
Let me unfold you
Here I am
Here I am
Waiting to hold you

Gosh, you say "turgid and moribund" as if it's a bad thing.
omg can't believe how much negative reactions there is. although this is not my favorite Fru solo LP, this quite enjoyable. this cover is not an exception.
This is why Anthony Kiedis does the singing in The Red Hot Chilli Peppers!
a 5, and dropping quickly to 4
Please stop playing this cheesy, boring, and unpleasant song.
u should be playing more of John's solo stuff. he touches the soul of those who allow it
Wow, recognized the tune immediately—haven't heard TMC in like decades. But generally agree this cover is not so good. More TMC please!
please cut it off before the incredibly cheesy whisper at the end.
While not the worst in rotation on RP, its definitely in the bottom 2. BLECH
This is awful — night and day from This Mortal Coil's version
turgid and moribund...bring on the mortis coil version
Really, a monster of a song, but easily the worst cover of it that I have heard.

BORING!
Stop crying already John... this song drones on and on and on
I like that Mr. Frusciante had the cojones to tackle this song. It's pretty good. I like Damon and Naomi's version a lot because of the harmonies. Tim Buckley sure was a babe.

As usual I'm in the minority. I prefer this version. To me the production on This Mortal Coil sounds dated and the vocals are so over the top they sound like Whitney Houston trying to be Enya.
I much prefer This Mortal Coil's version of this song. This one isn't bad though. He just can't compete with Liz Fraser's wonderful vocals.
worse than gay club karaoke
is it over yet?
Disturbing... in a good sense!
This song always induces a reflex reaching for the volume control. Interminable dirge....
i prefer Tim Buckley...
david grey does a killer version of this too!
Like many below, I prefer This Mortal Coil's version, this is baddish!
Funeral dirge? ugh
Second This Mortal Coil song reference this afternoon, did someone die?

Yes - the MC version is in a different dimension – the dimension where this strange song rightfully belongs. MC is much, much better.

Bill, yeah, yeah, yeah. Any TMC would be a very cool addition to the playlist.
I hear elements of Art Garfunkel's vocalizations in this version.
Bill PLEASE play the This Mortal Coil version, please please.

Bill, PLEASE do not play this song anymore!
I've always loved the TMC version of this, but I find nothing offensive or annoying about this version, and rather like it. So a solid 8.
Bill PLEASE play the This Mortal Coil version, please please.

Yeah, I thought the same thing. To my shame I have to admit that I haven't heard anything by This Mortal Coil yet (or anything by John Frusciante solo). I really dig this, and if TMC has a better version, great :)
I don't know this tune - but am quite taken aback. Clearly, I need to go find This Mortal Coil's recording based on the feedback here.

Me too. I suppose if I'd heard this first I might like it...but as I can only have it being played against TMC in my head, for a reason I can't explain, this version just makes my skin crawl.
For me, there's only one version of this song: This Mortal Coil's. Sorry, Tim.

I liked it, but kept expecting to go somewhere. Anywhere.
...now that i've a chance to properly listen - just breathtaking...

Very haunting. Me likes!
Robert Plant does a good version of this song, too! I think it is on Dreamland.
Only version of this song? The original - Tim Buckley off Starsailor. On Youtube check out Tim doing this song on the TV show the Monkees - he's a young man and a stunning talent.
zzzzzzzzzzzz

...this is a really beautiful rendition - echoes of elizabeth fraser's iconic delivery, sure, but i think john frusciante makes this his own...

I went to the Voodoo festival in N.O. not long after the flood. He did a solo of City Of New Orleans. Loved it.
Way to ruin a great song. Dreadful.

I always thought that was the original - is it? It's a country mile ahead of this dull version, IMO - TMC's version was much darker and atmospheric and still raises goose pimples on my arms. This one is aural Mogadon.
Edit: a look on the ever-dependable Wikipedia reveals that this was originally a Tim Buckley song.
This Mortal Coil version is too good!

RP needs "The Monkees" version of the Tim Buckley 12-string classic. This resembles it. Buckley's later studio version was much more dissonant and cacophonic.
I'd love to hear something from the album Shadows Collide With People, but I like this new album, too.

Frusciante on RP? 'bout time. It would be nice to hear some of his originals, though. The dude is good.
Strangely enough, This Mortal Coil weren't Tim Buckley, which this cover more closely resembles. Me likey.

Not a bad interpretation. Bill, can you play the version by the Czars? It's the best I've heard thus far.
Me like.
Nice! His talent is much more than what gets showcased with the Chili Peppers.
...i always love hearing new versions of this song - thanks so much for playing it...
When I first heard this, I thought it was Peter Gabriel.

Guitarist from Chili Peppers? Wow, really different sound! (I much prefer this sound)
