We must be the same age - I have exactly the same memories, including the kamikaze, except dad was on a minesweeper. South Pacific was an almost spiritual favorite among his friends. Vietnam never generated such a consensus.

Wikipedia claims Peggy Lee recorded 1100 recordings with a total of 270 songs. Any artists out there that know she wrote much more that never was recorded? I thought so.

Until now I had only heard this song on the Original Soundtrack. This version pulled me from what I was doing to find out who was singing. Peggy has a sweet voice that carries this version beyond the demur, taupe arrangement of the band. It's almost a lullaby compared to the power of the instruments that punch through on the original. It would be nice to hear more of her, without the velvety fog of the arrangers on this song, to see if she's got some versatility as well as power in her renderings. I can certainly hear where O'Connor's influence for her issue Am I Not Your Girl? originates. Good to hear the variety on the playlists, but I thought the Zeppelin follow-up would have been Kashmir.....

About a month ago I got to go to a screening of a new 70mm print of South Pacific. Wonderful. If you see that it's going to be shown in your area, don't miss it. It was done as part of preparing a new DVD, so that's an option too. Not sure of the release date for it, but the previous DVD was ugly it was so faded.
