Oh Mary Jane
She step on a train
Head for the city lights
Yearning inside
To swim with the tide
And taste it, alright
Bag on her shoulder
Breathing the cold
There by the metal tracks
She saw it all shine
And swore in her mind
She'd never go back
And she don't mind the late night
Late night radio
She don't mind the late night radio
She don't mind the late night
Late night radio
Na na
Couldn't have dreamed
The things that she seen
There on the avenue
She stared right into a million eyes
That looked her right through
Telling red Joe
The places she's go
And wiping the table clean
She got no idea
The demon of fear
Or what a broken heart mean
And she don't mind the late night
Late night radio
She don't mind the late night radio
She don't mind the late night
Late night radio
Na na na na na not at all (* 4)
Na na
New York was dark
Dirty and stark
Burning with yellow wings
Everyday come
With fever and hum
Who knows what it brings
Walking a wall
Without a thought
To fall and hit the ground
Sweet Mary Jane
With eyes like the rain
Alive to the sound
And she don't mind the late night
Late night radio

I hadn't heard this song before - it's a cracker!

same! agreed. great album. i saw him live when that came out. so fun.
I can't quite put my finger on the reason, but I really dig this song. Oh, and White Ladder is a monster of an album — I bet Gray had no idea it would take off like it did when he recorded it. It's an intimate, homegrown feeling piece.
same! agreed. great album. i saw him live when that came out. so fun.

Talented guy. His music really works for my ears.
For those of you who like the song but not the voice: there is another version of this song by Mary Black on her album Shine.
Nothing like playing music until u fall asleep :-)
Great track and a brilliant voice
One of my fav David Gray songs
Turin Gray
whenever I am with Mary Jane, RP always plays a song about her.

outstanding!!
Thanks for pulling this one out. I don't think you've played it in a while. It's not my favorite David Gray song, but it's David Gray, and he's one of my favorites.
love most of grays work this in comparison gets a spot lower 8
He is unbelievable live, way better than studio albums...which are pretty good too!
He can do better...

It's Friday morning and I'm patiently waiting for the MUSIC to begin. Save for Rachael Yamagata, Nancy Sinatra, John Lee Hooker, the Stones and a couple of other ditties, I'm about to cut out and spin my own collection.

Took me a little while to warm up to some of his stuff, but after seeing him in concert it all sounds pretty good. He does a really intense live show.
David Gray has never done anything halfway. he's always on his game. I don't get the comments about his quality dropping off. I totally disagree. He's not played enough methinks.
pffffft...
I like a lot of David Gray's stuff. "The Other Side" is one of my favorite all-time songs. But when he does more rock n roll-style stuff like this, it doesn't work for me. The tune is kinda catchy, but he just doesn't have the right voice for it, if you ask me.

I'm a big fan of his, especially his first 5 or 6 albums. I agree with others on here that his newer stuff isn't quite as good at times. Love this release, though.

Being a big DG fan instant 8.
He has a lot of better songs IMO, eg White Ladder.
Subsequent listening, up to 9 for the lyrics, great as always!
So sad he totally messed up his music, starting with White Ladder. I used to love his music (the early stuff), but never listen to his later work anymore.
But happy to hear music from his great period...
Why is k.d. lang on the cover of a David Gray album?
D.Gray's best album IMO !

Wow. I never heard that before, and now I'll never hear him the same again. Thanks for that.
I would gladly buy David's glasses for $9.99!
this is growing on me, but that suddenly-crashing guitar is jarring
OK, and now: Pere Ubu - Dark (St Arkansas)
i dunno. i basically am liking this, but the melody and vocal inflections have a weird geddy lee and rush vibe that makes me a little uncomfortable.
anyone else notice that?
i give it an uncomfortable seven...
David Gray always reminds me of my nephew Sam, who loved Gray's music when he was about three years old. Sam's eight now, and he's not so into David Gray, but I will forever associate the two.

You're right I had that the other way around. Oliver looked like Paul Williams. But I didn't know who Paul Williams was when The Brady Bunch jumped the proverbial shark and brought on a younger kid to the cast. I sort of remember seeing Paul Williams on a daytime talk show when I was real young (Mike Douglas or Merv, something like that) and thinking it was Oliver.

Usually I like this guy, but this isnt one of the tunes. It reminds me of my boyfriend listening to my Mike Doughty CD and saying ARRGH!
I admit, there's too much phrase repetition phrase repetition phrase repetition, there's too much phrase repetition phrase repetition phrase repetition, this a technique for brainwashing someone brainwashing someone brainwashing someone...
As Dr Farnsworth (on Futurama) once noted when Frye was dating Lucy Liu-bot, "Oh no, she's caught in a loop and he's an idiot...!"
The piano makes this one. Catchy riffs.
The best I can make of the lyrics is some girl who's hitchhiking at night in New York for some reason. And she doesn't mind it.

Thank you. My thoughts exactly when I first heard this. I like the song though. He could have had better lyrics. I'd think a song would take on a serious tone like that if this certain someone was alway bitching and moaning about late night radio, stereo or television, for that matter, and making someone else's life difficult because of that.
If anyone knows WTH this song is about, fill me in.

Great flashback
Is it just me or does he look like the guy in the IBM ads and the Taco Bell dude who says "good to go" while doing some gesture with his hand?
Long before White Ladder (in the good old days) this was his most popular song in Ireland where he was already really well known and loved. It was always a high point in his gigs. He was really great in those days before he 'sacrificed the poems of his imagination'.

Funny - for me it's exactly the other way around . . .
This is pretty good at 3 in the morning. Otherwise, the jury is still out. I want to like David Gray, though.... Why is it so tough?
OK, this is the second time that I heard this and it starting to grow on me. Solidly OK, though I wouldn't spend the money on buying the album. Funny cover also.

This reminds me of Harry Chapin singing on Taxi Driver or whatever it's called.

Well. "Sell, Sell, Sell" is the name of the album...
Maybe he's trying to tell us something.
I enjoy both versions of David Gray - old and new. And stuff in between like this. There aren't a lot of people/groups I can say that about.

this songs phrasing sounds like that saturday night live song with dana carvey(?), Broccollllliiii, Broccollllleaaaa. Particularly the emphasis on radioooooo
What happened to David Gray? This stuff does nothing for me. Time for him to bring back the cheesy drum tracks?
wow, this is good, I don't think I've heard some of his earlier stuff...but this makes me want to check it out

I agree that we're talking about two artists, old Gray and newer Gray, so with that in mind, I have to put in a vote for more "New Day at Midnight" cuts. I mean, hey, RP, you guys use computers and stuff, right? There's room, right?

Actually, ever since White Ladder, I'm much less impressed...

Don't know much of his music, just the few I have heard off commercial radio. This sounds better than most of what I have heard. That's the beauty of RP, you get some different stuff.
Tracy Chapman!
Oh wait...
