There's a wild thing in the woolshed
And it's keeping me awake at night
A devil in the closet
And a feeling I'd prefer to hide
He is religion
He won't hear me when I cry for help
He has a vision of me
But I am somebody else

We talk the pillow
There are times when I'm tied up to the fence
Only talking sense

There's a mirror lake before me
But I'm frozen when it's time to jump
It's like maybe I'm afraid of what I'll find
When independence comes
You steal my shadow
You make my blood run dry

We are true only when we talk the pillow
There are times when I'm tied up to the fence
Only talking sense

Did you suffer as a child
That's why you want to make me cry
You are afraid of me
That's why you're so unkind

You won't deny it
When your child is tied up to the fence
And I'm only talking sense
Lonely when we talk the pillow
And your child is messed up in the head
I'm only talking sense

these lyrics. so sad and troubling.

I think this song is about Mathew Shepard, the young man in Wyoming who was beaten and tied to a fence, where he died. I have never heard this before.

Well, the first stanza says that RELIGION is keeping him awake at night, and is the devil in his closet. I think it's only coincidental that Mr Finn (one of them, anyway) sings "it's like maybe I'm tied up to the fence."
Two of the most underrated songwriters alive today....every song touches a nerve one way or another

The song was released in 1995.  Mathew was murdered in 1998.
First time to hear this.  Solid 8.
I love this song <3

I wholeheartedly concur with MojoJojo's sentiment.

Thank you, Matthew McConahay, for the intro chant. I feel ready to take on the world.

{#Cheers} ...... is most excellant
Here is the artwork that accompanies this wonderful album.

Wonderful.  Great emotion.

I've always thought that the Mighty Finns and Crowded House gang are among the very best artists to ever grace the Music scene.  I've loved every phase they've gone through and shared, and I believe that inside every polished nugget they issue is a heart of the finest rarest raw and earthy Infinite; how they do it is beyond me, but I am very very glad that they do! and gladder still that RP promotes and maintains such a well-stocked reservoir of their impeccably rich talents!
7 to a 9. This is just a great tune...from an eclectically cool album.

Tim's also on CH's second album.

Great song on a somewhat uneven album (and I'm a huge Finn/Crowded House fan).  If you're going to pick up a Finn Brothers album, I highly recommend you start with "Everyone is Here" from 2004 — it's an excellent album with very personal songs that could only be written by brothers working together.

Agree with the first part, but I think Everyone is Here is also uneven. Put 4 or 5 of the songs from each album together (and the B-sides from Everyone) and you've got a great album. ;-) I'm also a huge fan of all things Finn.

WONDERFUL!

LOVE this song. The masters!

Arggg!  I still cannot buy this song!  WTF is wrong with you guys?  Do you want people to steal your music?? I WANT TO BUY IT.
Lots of FB and CH today - I'll take it!

Yet another good song from these guys. {#Clap}

Erm... don't know how old this song is. But please, take a minute to listen to this. In fact, take one minute and 15 seconds. Don't you hear a slight resemblance in the guitar tune?

Don't know, but thanks for turning me on to this song!

Another one of those songs that I love and am unable to legally download.  Come on guys, I WANT TO BUY IT.

Ahhhh. Perfect.
Check out the trippy video for this song on YouTube. Tim's tongue and Neil's eyes escape and run around the place a bit  {#Wink}
{#Cheers} Man, all the CH albums are terrific - some of the most creative stuff going these days.  I always thought that Tim was the weak link in the band, and the Finn Brother collaborations were not up to CH standards.  Nevertheless, this is a good song.  Hope Neil keeps writing and wrting and writing....

Read some Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin. {#Skull}

Seriously, when musicians have to rally a benefit concert for an artist as great as Curtis Mayfield (RIP) in order to pay his medical bills, something's seriously wrong in the music industry, never mind how RP and other Internet stations almost got shuttered a while back. My daughter dated the son of a Time Warner/AOL bigshot several years back; the family had FIVE vacation homes scattered around the globe. So do you really think the artists get their due?

Try Googling +"<artist>" +"<title>" +free +download and see what you come up with, substituting the <variable> data accordingly..

In my dreams, I find a very sick person to go cough on Tim Finn every few days and give him permanent laryngitis so that he can't go poison his brother's work ever again. Like Yoko, he caused the creative end to Crowded House. (Don't bother correcting me with facts. I'm convinced.)

Agree, tho' I haven't had the fortune of seeing this live. An awesome body of work these guys have put together over the years.

I was listenting to this on my ipod in the car this morning (5:30am) and wondered to myself - Do B&R have this one on their playlist?
Just ripped this CD to my music server. Excellent CD!

What a special treat. 'Fall at Your Feet' not too long ago and now this. My day is now complete.

These brothers constantly amaze me, Neil especially. His voice is distinctive and always grabs me right away.

Really loving that subtle piano work in the background of this...

Thanks to RP (and Crowded House) I have become an avid Finn Brothers fan! Is this really (really!?) a new CD coming out in Aug? Have there been any CDs released by them since the 1996 CD? I'm a FB fledgling, so be gentle!
Neil Finn released "Try Whistling This" a few years back. One of the best albums I've ever heard. Each song different and extremely well crafted.
Too damn short. Play it again, Bill, play it again! ;-) Excellent tune.
I could tell that was ex-Crowded House...Google works every time :) Good to hear his awesome voice isn't being wasted!
first thing on a monday (west coast here) thank you!!
Yum - I always smile when I hear this song. I love the rythm / base, and the funky harmonies. I can see why it's not everybody's cup of tea, but I was happy to see that it had a rating of 8 overall ...

great song!!
not so good
The Finn brothers rock my socks! this whole album is fantastic
Nice! Loved these guys since "I Got You." But what is that opening? Are they channeling Jim Pepper? (Oh, nice segue into David Byrne, Bill! Both the aural connection to the Finns' opening, and the Talking Sense connection -- you're a sly one!)
Hmm... Finns + T Heads = STOP TALKING, ONLY MAKE SENSE.
I went to a Finn Bros concert in Sydney last night!!!! It was brilliant. Thay played all of the new album and I must say I have warmed to it considerably. They also played some earlier Split Enz and Crowded House stuff. The highlight was when Neil Finn encouraged people to dance - I ended up at the edge of the stage with four other women - only to be approached by a security guard to sit back down. Neil told him to leave us alone and basically to f*** off - then followed an anarchic rush to create a wild throng. It was touching to be part of a group of mainly 30 - 40 somethings rebel with the support of the artist. The music was brilliant, the mix perfect - and they started and finished with family movies of their childhood on a screen behind them. A great vibe. Great musicians. I'm still excited.....
Ooohh, there is a new Finn Brothers album!? 'scuse me, I'm off to the record store. (sorry about your Amazon link RP, but I don't trust the internet with my finances)

Yes, the new CD will be released in August. No, this is only their second CD as "Finn" or "The Finn Brothers" although they have recorded together under many other names (Split Enz, Crowded House, solo albums, etc.) If they are coming anywhere near your area on their tour, do yourself a favor and GO! You won't be disappointed..... their web site stated they will be playing material from both Finn albums as well as Crowded House and Split Enz material.
I love me some Neil Finn - will have to put this on the list of CD's to look for!

This is great!!! Could hardly believe I was hearing it when it started..... amazing album. Can't wait for the follow-up coming out this summer!!!
You really have to hand it to these guys - following their muse, not aiming for marketability, not repeating themselves. This album so easily could have been Woodface II, and I probably would have liked that too, but instead they went this way. Did anyone out there see them live following this album? I heard a show live on the radio, just the two of them, but apparently they had some non-synthesized way of supplementing their guitar and piano work...?
Nice addition! I really like this little album.
