Lyrics:

(Money Money Money Money Nothin But Money)

I work 9 to 5 but it starts in the PM
And I love the sunrise so I step out in the AM
The street is black and shiny from the nightly rainin'
The glory of the light it brings evaporation
Morning's fresh oxygen cleanest
I take a deep hit help my mind stay the greenest
I'm already wake so I'm not drinkin' coffee
Don't wanna cigarette, cause it's a form of slavery
Walk into the store cause I need a few items
The sun heats my blood like a hit of vitamins
Need to buy some food and some 'poo for my dreads
I can't remember why but I need a spool of thread
Man with dirty dreads, he steps around the corner
He asks me for a dime, a nickel or a quarter
I don't have any change so I'm steppin' along
And as I'm walkin' past he sings to me a song...

There's a hole in the bucket
Dear Liza, dear Liza
There's a hole in the bucket
Dear Liza, dear Liza

The day is pickin' up cause I'm hummin' his song
The buses and the people all keep movin' along
To the shopkeeper I say "was'sup?"
And I'm thinkin' about the man who's holdin' up the cup
I pay for all the stuff and get a pocketful of change
Should I give it to the man's the question in my brain
What's gonna happen if I give the man a dime?
I don't wanna pay for anotha brotha's wine
What's gonna happen if I give the man a quarter?
Will he find a dealer and try to place an order?
What's gonna happen if I give the man a nickel
Will he buy some food or some pork that's been pickled?
I'm not responsible for the man's depression
How can I find compassion in the midst of recession?
How come all these questions keep fuckin' with my head
And I still can't rememba why I need a spool of thread

He's starin' in my eyes just as I'm walkin' past
I'm tryin to avoid him cause I know he's gonna ask
Me about the coinage that is in my pocket
But I don't know if I should put it in his bucket
Walk right past him to think about it more
Back at the crib I'm openin' up the door
A pocketful of change it don't mean a lot to me
My cup is half full but his is empty
I put back on my cap and I start headin' back
I reach into my pocket and I have a heart attack
Well as I'm diggin' deep I scream "oh no!"
There's nothin' in the pocket but a great big hole
While I was busy thinkin' if he would buy smack
The jingle in my pocket it slipped through the cracks
No one has the change and it's fuckin' up my head
But now I know the reason why I had to buy the thread!
I\'d call it a sort of Ambient R&B. I\'m not much of a rap fan either, but this song is enjoyable. Reminds me a little of Arrested Development.
Bill, What\'s up with the profanity on this song in the middle of the day? Not that I\'m a prude, but sometimes I have RP playing around the house and I wouldn\'t want my kids to hear this song.
If I never heard this song again it would be to soon.
I\'ve always thought rap is to music what cubism is to painting.
This is NOT rap music. I friggin\' HATE rap music, and I like this a great deal.
Very chillllllll........ (pimp)

What a great groove! (that\'s right, 2 cool icons)
Rap that sounds like this is gooood. :)
this rocks hard.
I\'m generally not much of a rap fan, but this number is cool. The instrumental bed caught my attention at first -- I like the tweaked guitar sample throughout the song. Although I\'m pretty opinionated about what music I like and dislike, I\'m open to hearing anything once or twice, and I try not to dismiss something until I\'ve given it a few tries. This song is a good example of that. This is one of the things that makes Radio Paradise the great place it is. Even if what\'s playing right now makes me ill, in 3 or 4 minutes Bill could pull up something that blows me away. Ya never know . . . maybe you\'ll be surprised to find you like something you didn\'t expect to. I really like when that happens.
Strong reaction both pro and con here. I like it myself.
First time I\'ve heard this. I like, yes, its official, I like this. A solid 9 from moi. (pimp)
I like this. It challenges my musical taste -- that\'s a good thing. ;)
Do we have some snobs here or what? I'm glad RP is daring enough to play ANYTHING, be it hip hop, rock, celtic, classical, or African. Diversity is why I come here.

MTV? Rump shakin'? Rap? Did you not listen to the words or did you just default to a narrow-minded viewpoint that anything black, urban and spoken is rap and all rap is about rump-shakin'? If the answer is yes then I say, gross...

MTV? hardly, the few occasions MTV actually plays any music, it's just stuff guaranteed to sell and appeal to the spoonfed masses. anymore, MTV is one of the worst things to happen to independant thought.
\"...but now I know why I had to buy the thread.\"
This is the kind of variety that makes RP so great

groovy riff and lyrics
pretty kewl! don\'t know why but I just like it By-the-way, can that really be classified as rap? I mean no swearing, no anger . . . doesn\'t seem to fit the mold.
I\'m not a big fan of rap (hip-hop, whatever), because most of it has no content. (not unlike the Whitesnake catalog...) This, on the other hand, has something to say, says it well, and ties up the loose ends neatly at the end. I\'d love to hear more from this CD. Another track like this and I\'m ready to buy. Keep up the great work, Bill.
You can\'t spell CRAP without RAP.
Damn, you guys are playing some great stuff today. I\'ve always loved this song. Actually, the whole CD is worth having. Keep \'em coming.
Hee hee hee -- I don\'t care if it\'s rap or has a compelling social message... I wasn\'t listening too closely at first, but then I caught the lyrics. Reaction: disbelief, then a big smile when I recognized it as one of the songs we used to sing on the playground when I was just a wee lass! I got a huge kick out of this! :^)

There are many out there (mostly 40+ people) who dismiss anything that resembles rap or hiphop as "crap". I was a rap hater for years. But the more i listened, the more i liked. Granted, there's tons of rap out there that i hate. But, like any musical genre, you cant like 'em all, and there's bound to be some out there thats palatable.

Those (ignorant) people who just dismiss this as "rap crap" obviously don't know what they're talking about and don't know a damn thing about good hip hop and the talent it involves. (other great hip hop bands include Jurassic 5, De La Soul, Dilated Peoples, and The Roots (who play all their own instruments and write all their own music).
cheers to that! thanks for summarizing my thoughts! :p (btw-- some roots, de la, tribe would sound great on this station....)

true. likewise, one of my favorite bands of all time is Sepultura - a Brazillian band overflowing with deep political, social, spiritual, meaningful lyrics - but I would not expect most RP listeners to find their style of extremely heavy thrash metal even remotely palatable. and besides, I just like them for their music, the message is secondary in my book.

Not bad. Sounds a little like Everlast.
Excellent hip hop. Thank you Bill for having the good sense and vision to pick the best of so many genres of music. The folks below who dismissed this as \"rap crap\" clearly just aren\'t really listening. Thanks again.
agreed. pretty lame. just because it has a "message" doesnt make it good music. I also agree with Lily, below, some Roots would be fantastic. full live band with rappers.
Lame.
I really liked this. I\'m not a rap or a hip-hop fan particularly, but this was cool. Thought it was Gil Scott Heron at first. Once again, thanks for the diversity on RP. You just never know what\'s gonna turn up here and that\'s exactly why I keep coming back.

sucko-barfo. i thought i tuned in to the wrong station today :)
Rap-ish without being harsh, and good lyrics. ranks a 7 - 8 with me! Thanks RP ! :D
Am I the only one who rates this :)
Just buy this album. . . Choc super highway (the album before this one) is also good but this is probably the most played album in my collection. . . I just can\'t get enough. I\'ll keep posting here until its played some more. .. . PLEASE! :D
I enjoy the diversity on RP. However, this tune could fall thru the Hole in the bucket, And I wouldn\'t miss it.
Bought this CD when it came out, but completely forgot about it til hearing it here. Love it.
When I first heard this, I liked it for the groove, but really wasn\'t listening to the words. Just now, I listened to the \"lyrics\". What a great story: what a great song.
Whoah, never heard this before. Definitely not something you hear on the crap radio (boo Clear Channel) these days. Nice stuff...
Do I detect Chaka Khan's vocals in the background?
I totally agree with Poacher - the album is superb and much under-appreciated. Almost uncategorisable and all the better for that.
Well worth getting this album (home). It spread like wildfire where I live once a few people got hold of it because it was so good. Poor marketing meant it did not do too much but it still get\'s played by me often. . . :D
Does no one else remember that this song's 1961 version by Harry Belafonte was often featured on Dr. Demento's radio show? "There's a hole in the bucket / Dear Liza, dear Liza / Then fix it / Dear Henry, dear Henry..." (Maybe "reference" would be a better term than "version".) See lyrics
The man\'s in a groove!!! Rock on, funky man! :D
The words are true, the idea sane. This isn\'t just run-of-the-mill rap.
Wasn't my top upload choice for Bill, but glad it's in the rotation. This definately has enough reggae overtones to overcome it's heretofor 'rap'.
the groove is O.K. ... and the 'hole in the bucket' vocal is O.K. ... and the acoustic guitar is nice ... but the lyrics and beat and rythm are the same old ... lame .... rap crap (as my good friend's 16 year old son calls it)... :D (not that that's a bad thing ... :) )
