In my book of dreams
In my book of dreams
In my book of dreams

I took your urgent whisper
Stole the arc of a white wing
Rode like foam on the river of pity
Turned its tide to strength
Healed the hole that ripped in living

In my book of dreams
In my book of dreams
In my book of dreams

The spine is bound to last a life
Tough enough to take the pounding
Pages made of days of open hand

In my book of dreams
In my book of dreams
In my book of dreams

Number every page in silver
Underline in magic marker
Take the name of every prisoner
Yours is there my word of honor

I took your urgent whisper
Stole the arc of a white wing
Rode like foam on the river of pity
Healed the hole that ripped in living

In my book of dreams
In my book of dreams

Bitch
NO MORE VEGA!! Bland boring voice and music - YUK. STOP playing it so much Bill.
Death, taxes and we'll hear Suzanne Vega and Tracy Chapman each once an hour.
There is a fine line in her work between inspired and ho hum.  Shows up on the listener ratings for this tune.

{#Clap} Oh What a perfect simile! Thank you. I also like the rest of your comment.
Bill, your webcam just shows your technology. We never see your face. It's kind of like a Wizard of Oz thing.
Love Suzanne Vega, but this song and album were big disappointments. So uninspired.
please, no more suzanne vega = no talent?

I definitely will NOT be listening to this on my Chumby.

Well, unless of course, Bill subjects me to it again. Against my most fervent protests.
...still love this...

Yes, yes, plus "In Liverpool" off "99.9°F" and "Caramel" off "Nine Objects of Desire."

Agreed. She has some incredible music, but I didn't care for "Days of Open Hand" at all. I took it back to the used CD store. The two before it and most of the stuff after it are great though.
Grrrrrrr...what a fox

Why is it, when somebody says "this isn't his/her best song", they never say what their best song *is*?

Yup, Suzanne is wonderful. I love her voice, but this isn't her best song.

Though this is not my favorite song on the album, overall Days of Open Hand is a very good disc. 'Tired of Sleeping' is a standout.
Her voice drips around my heart like warm milky chocolate. "Nine Objects of Desire" was a brilliant album! And seeing her live in Vancouver BC at a small pub was one of the greatest concert experiences of my life. Okay, grudgingly yeah, this isn't one of the better songs. How about "Caramel" or "Honeymoon Suite"?
Bill, you know I love Suzanne Vega...but can we pick another song of hers? Caramel? Widows Walk? Soap & water? No cheap Thrill or Casual Match? (classic!)
What a wonderfully talented woman!
Often, listeners comment along the lines of "hated it at first...but it's growing on me" Well, I'm not that listener

The only other SV song I know is Tom's Diner, so I wont judge her based on 2 tunes, but this one is so bland.
Her self-titled debut album (from 1985) is excellent, although "Marlene on the Wall" was overplayed on MTV. It's still one of my all-time favorites. "Solitude Standing" (1987) was critically acclaimed and went multiplatinum. I think it's weaker than her first, and her work went downhill from there.

I'll take Geddy Lee over her any day....
weak ... very weak ...

Hah, that's pretty funny. Vega paved the way for Colvin, not the other way around. In fact, I think I saw Colvin open for Vega in Boston in the early 90s. Suzanne Vega is a brilliant musician. Her first and latest albums are wonderful. Unfortunately, most of the stuff in between (such as this) is rather uninspired. I'm glad she's been able to find some passion again with her latest work.
repetitive choruses ruin it for me repetitive choruses ruin it for me repetitive choruses ruin it for me repetitive choruses ruin it for me

Any chance you mean Shawn Colvin?
Would have bet money that was Dar Williams.

The only album of hers that I have is 99.9F, and I thought it was great. It's a bit edgier than this song. I haven't listened to it in ages. Maybe I'll have to dig it out....
catchy ... pop fodder, yes... but catchy

This is so substandard for Suzanne Vega... I always wonder if she did it just to land a pop hit.
Sounds like she is singing "In my hookah..."
Anyone get Julie Cruise in there?

I gave this an 8, because it is Suzy V and she can do no wrong. Having said that, this is probably one of her weaker songs - I'm quite surprised it made the greatest hits album. AC. P.S. Does anyone else have this thing where they hear a song on RP, which makes them want to play more from the artist, but if they do they risk missing more good stuff on RP?
frequently!
The song's all right but I just can't get over Suzanne's picture on the cover. Reminds me of Parker Posey in "Best in Show".
Don't like the song... but the sound of her voice is just wonderful.
blah. after reading what everyone else wrote about her, i'm willing to give vega another shot if something else comes on, but this is mediocre at best.

so how does this mediocre song make a greatest hits album when Men In a War doesn't?

Suzanne Vega... poet, yes... one of my favorites. I'm going to get bashed for the comparison, but you know, Bob Dylan can't sing, either... or play harmonica... and his songs are extremely repetitive and uninteresting if you listen to the melody alone. But the poetry is deeply inspiring. This is how I feel about Suzanne Vega.
Are you saying that you think Suzanne Vega can't sing? You've gotta be kidding! She has an angelic voice, smooth and rich.....your're kidding right? Have you listened to "Songs in Red & Grey?"-it's a masterpiece cover to cover (if your're a S.V. fan). She is way more than a poet!!

Loved the first two albums - lost interest with "Days of open hand", but have been enjoying tracks from "Songs in red and grey" here on RP. Unfortunately, this song is just dull, there's nothing especially wrong with it, but not much to say in it's favour either.

JUST TO SHOW MY SUPPORT TO SUZANNE, I POST A 7, NOT A GREAT SONG THOU...
Suzanne Vega is a poet, not a singer. I've read that she doesn't like her own voice and isn't comfortable singing at all. Algee wrote:
What is the deal with all this Suzanne Vega? Her entire range consists of about 6 notes. Her songs are boring and she has a funny accent. It is very rarely that I don't like a musical artist, so I guess in that sense Suzanne Vega is a rarity.
Ho-hum.
99.9F° was the first CD I ever bought. I love her voice and "funny accent"

I was wondering why there where no comments for this song. Then I listened to it all the way through. It does nothing to offend.... nothing to inspire.... is it worth comment. Well.... I guess so as I'm writting ;) To be honest I didn't realise she was still making music.
Great song and great album of greatest hits!!! Her last album \"Songs in red and gray\" is also a remarkable album. A surprise, a beautiful comeback,... I like to hear it, thanks RP!!
