I think of the Decemberists as The Smiths for the 21st century - all mopey. (Not that that's a bad thing. I like much of their material.) Adding James Mercer's voice brings a little light to their work. And yes, I'm a big fan of the Shins.

I think it's cool that The Decemberists gave us a rock song that contains a trumpet fill! Not a lot of bands can pull that off, or would even think of doing so.

grew up with the Kingston Trio's version and I'm not hearing it...nor the Beach Boys version but I rarely listened to them given an alternative

Pleasant.  The "but" that follows for me is in the lyrics:
"They've undid the aerial
Tore down the merry-go-round" 
should be followed by
"The grammar's all wrong"
