My god I remember when this was brand new.  Killer Queen was the first big hit, quickly followed by the albums Night At The Opera and a Day At The Races.  It was so fresh and bright compared to anything on the radio at the time.  I was in Germany in the mid-1970s and remember this playing on AFN radio a lot.  I didn't listen to much German radio but I could tell it was popular there too.

I consider this song to be a high 7 going into an 8, but I have to give it a 6 here so that it won't show up in my Favorites playlist. It's a fabulous song for sure, but it's (as some others have said) overplayed. And I mean this as a 61-year old guy who grew up with this stuff. They played it too much on the classic rock stations, and I'm guessing they still do (I don't listen to regular radio anymore). My two cents.

At girlfriend's encouragement, joined Becket Players and learned to sing chorus for this, as part of Chorus to their theatre presentation fundraiser for the Montreal Childrens' Hospitals.

Loved every moment of that season, rehersals for dance and voice and movement, and gf's closeness as bonus,

What an awesome time...

At the end where they get very quiet and then bring it up, I always picture my dad directing the band (he was a middle-school band director) to bring it back up to loud slowly and patiently.  I can see him crouching and making the 'shhh...' sign at the start of the crescendo...

I guess I've never forgiven them for Boho Rhap.  I grew up on Long Island in the 70s, and they played it on the radio, oh, I don't know, 400 fucking times a day for 8 months, then 360 times / day for the next 16 months. N ever been a big fan. Bowie, on the other hand... Do you happen to have the German version of Heroes, from Sound + Vision?

Thankyou, thankyou for reminding me of how Queen sold out - to their credit. Take a listen to the albums 'Queen 1' and Queen 2'. The only thing ever close to those was "Brighton Rock". Jeez, they are masters of marketing their product. Maybe the labelling was a misnomer. Imagine that - the "Faith No More" of the 70's but no one knew it.  It was quite obvious with that beautiful ditty 'Crazy Little thing Called Love". But "Fat Bottomed Girls" certainly throws the mix.

Arrogance, pomposity, show-boating - it all makes for the right recipe when you combine it with song-writing genius and master technicians. Some of their songs were complete bollocks (Pain Is So Close To Pleasure, My Baby Does Me, Hang On In There, Man On The Prowl), but many of the others are quite brilliant. This one takes gospel to a level to look down from, much like the way Jimi Hendrix played the blues beyond what all the blues legends could never hold a candle to (Gary Moore's version of Red House does something similar too).

I've heard that when this came out as a single, it was deemed a lesser version of Bohemian Rhapsody. It stands very well on it's own, and while I get the landmark significance of BH, I'd rather listen to this any day.

I don't know about that; I would venture a guess that "most" of the RP listeners are not continually connected to a streaming source, to listen only to RP, or many may find themselves listening to terrestrial radio at one time or another - like while driving.

So much natural talent, I am surprised Freddie didn't explode.
Superb song. I first stated listening to Queen (buying their albums) in 1981. This song never really struck me at first. In fact, it was only in the last ten years that I really started to get it.
There are loads of gems of this quality on every album they did up until Hot Space came along. It wasn't until Innuendo that the magic returned.

Greatest gospel song ever to feature an all-white casting. Beautiful singing, and the usual superb guitar doodles from Brian May. We need more songs sung by Freddie Mercury. It's an automatic mood-lifter.
