By the bumper cars
In the pretty twining light
I may have gone too far
I may have gone too much, too long.
I'm a dull and witless boy

In the after-bars
Think I was sullied by a dream
In the killing jar
You and me at war, at arms
All falling in embrace

Tell me why you lied
And what it is you do to keep your eyes
All shiny

A tawny gypsy girl
Sleeping blanketed by stars
Beneath the tilt-a-whirl
Where we were coyly caught alone
All fumbling with your blouse

Tell me why you lied
And what it is you do to keep your eyes
All shiny

In the roller coaster din
By the parachutes in saddle shoes you break your shin
But I have never seen two eyes so shiny

And the sullen beery swine
Try to tangle you in sullen beery balls of twine
Have they ever seen two eyes so shiny?

The boys in denim vests
Smoking cigarettes between
Their bootblack fingertips
Sweetly tipsy by the half-light
The light and the half-light

Tell me why you lied
And what it is you do to keep your eyes
All shiny

This is a nice little EP. I enjoy the fact that it's called 5 Songs despite containing, count 'em, six songs.
eewww, icky

Good call on uploading this.  I'm a big Decemberists fan (except for the new album, which feels flat and uninspired to me for some reason) and I've never heard this.

I need to find this EP. I am a fan, as well, and have somehow missed this song.

Laurelia - thanks for submitting this song!

They are good. Shame about the old horizontal guitar thingies, which always make me think C&W to which I have a knee-jerk reaction of loathing. Luckily they're not too prominent in this song so it's listenable. 6 from the Nottingham jury.
awesome
Just what this station needs, some more Decemberists!{#Lol}{#No}

I love this. My upload - very happy to see it played.  I'd never heard this early song until I saw it performed  last year at a benefit concert they did in Astoria, Oregon.  One of the (many) highlights of a really wonderful evening.

Al Stewart's younger brother?

Thanks for uploading! Oceanside from that EP is a mighty fine tune, too.

Btw: Just noticed that there's two "Shinies" on RP - wonder how that happened, but nevermind...

Lots of accordions today. I like 'em.
Sounds like the Decemberists with a bit of Calexico on backing instruments . . .

Oh god, so totally tired of the Decemberists. Will they go away in January?
The critics seem to love this band and everyone tells me they are so good, but I just don't see it.{#No}
Please keep playing this song. More proof that the Decemberists know how to make music.
PLEASE MAKE IT GO AWAY
Please make it stop!
