Jimmy is married and he lives down south
His wife lives somewhere colder
He sees another woman in a badlands town
And she cries upon his shoulder

Jimmy thinks that he's a helpless man
He thinks about love in a vacuum
And he won't remember that talk you had
When you were walking into the bedroom

He'll say I don't know why we met
The simple truth is always the best
C'est la vie - what's done is done
And there's somebody for everyone

Jimmy has debts and Jimmy has ties
That he can't get out from under
If you look far enough into his eyes
It'll rock you just like thunder

Jimmy broke locks and Jimmy broke bolts
Just to get himself out from under
When you feel like you're lying in a prison cell
It'll kind of make you wonder

He'll say it's destiny we met
The simple truth is always the best
Don't you see what's done is done
And there's somebody for everyone

I used to get drunk to get my spark
And it used to work just fine
It made me wretched but it gave me heart
I miss Jimmy like I miss my wine

Jimmy as if you didn't know by now
Let me tell you a thing or two
Everybody might have someone
But everyone falls in love with you...

He'll say you get just what you get
The simple truth is always the best
Don't you see what's done is done?
And there's somebody for everyone

Hearing this in the background as I comment on rough drafts for students, I thought this was a new Rikki Lee Jones song.

That's a compliment.

I'm recognizing it totally the opposite, she is actually the fresh and living one, and R. L. J. is the goddess for the depressive ones. In this way it becomes a shoe!
Wow
A great CD! And so much better than the not-so-good covers that she seems fond of lately.
This is a terrific album, and this may be the best song on the album. But for my money, Fat City is her best. “Set the Prairie on Fire...”
Every time I hear Shawn Colvin I think I need to dig deeper into this artist but just don't find the time. She sounds sometimes like if I could role all of my favorite female artists together I would find this amazing sweet and edgy sound.

I am still dreaming about how wonderful the inaugural Cayamo voyage was... and how wonderful it was listening to Shawn,  Patti Emmy Lou under the stars in the middle of the Caribbean sea......wow!

I still love her "Steady On" CD best ("Dead of the Night" inspired me to write several short stories), but this one is just great, too. Shawn Colvin is one of my favorite female artists, and this song is so edgy and unexpected, lyrically, that I can't help but keep it high on my very small list of icons.

You were a beautiful writer, Cynaera...  miss you so much...

"Sunny Came Home" from this album won song of the year in '98.  The rest of the songs aren't far behind.  Very strong album.

Yeah... nice to hear it again.
Like the artist, like the song. The cover is just plain stupid with a stupid album title. Sorry Shawn...trying too hard to be obscure, mysterious and cutting edge at the same time. Just doesn't work for me. Then again...I'm in a crabby mood right now...so....zip.

Exactly where this took me as well!  Very strong album.

A solid 10 for me - this song and the album. Still in heavy rotation after owning it for years.

This whole album is solidly good to great, from beginning to end...full of interesting music, emotions, instrumentation and lyrics.

Totally agree! Time was, I would play this all the way through over and over.

Yup. And coauthored most of it as well.

Very good to know, thank you!
Bill is batting three for three today in the "new additions" category.
Sounds like John Levanthal, Rosanne Cash's hubby, produced this.  Gotta be.  You can hear his distinctive guitar riffs like on Rosanne's recent albums.
